Where Are The Fire Exits And Fire Extinguishers?

The New Year's Eve fire in Switzerland has caused discussion on what fire precautions should be taken by the public and how laws should be tightened.

Fire Evacuation Announcements & Drills

If you have been on an aircraft you will have heard the fire evacuation notices. On a ship you have fire drills and announcements.

I remember having fire drills at school.

Fire Exit Maps

Hotels have exit maps on the back of bedroom doors.

Smoke Alarms

Landlords are required to provide smoke alarms in residences, and check them annually.

Fire Extinguishers in Restaurants

When I was recently in a Chinese restaurant, JM, in London, a fire extinguisher was on the wall.

Today I was in a cafe, Gail's, near Smithfield Market, which had a fire extinguisher on the wall.

It is reassuring to see that plans are in place.

Now the father of the bride at the Iraqi wedding has died.

How can anybody prevent this happening again?

The Iraqi army needs to install sprinklers and fire extinguishers in every major event hall and building. if the Iraqi government can't afford it, call on the richest countries, such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, maybe a consortium. Or the United Nations. Or Go Fundme. Then spread out the same across the Middle East and then the rest of the world, including the UK and the USA. Make 2004 the fire safety year.

And what is being done about cladding? No point just giving money. Let's have accountability. Just like the list outside the toilets in public buildings show when the checks have been made by the person in charge, and the phone number to call ro report any problem observed by the public. Public listings of action taken. No vague promises about lessons will be learned. List the lesson learned, the action to be taken, the deadline for the action, the person responsible, and the funds allocated to all the products, workers and supervisors.

Fire extinguishers and blankets you need

You might want both the foam sort and the fire blanket to put over a fire without covering your room with foam.

Also note:
Fie extinguisher  - is not a warning device. A warning device is not an extinguisher. You may want to supply or ask for four items:

Smoke alarm.

CO2 alarm. (Both can be bought, batteries supplied, in the UK from Morrisons supermarket. Probably cheaper than getting the inventory company to supply and check them.)

Price about five pounds for one item, twenty for the other, could be cheaper than your inventory company. Allow time to decide which is easier and more convenient.

Fire extinguisher (foam type).

Fire blanket.
Morrisons was open until 10 pm on a Saturday in February when Wirtrose had already shut.

Inventory people can check alarms and bring new if told in advance..
