Different Ways of Packing - the student way

Problem
How do you avoid packing on the last night if you have a late night farewell?

Packing
By Angela Lansbury

"How should I pack? Tell me, how do you pack?"
Chris says, "I pack light - don't care what I lack.
Who cares what you wear! I don't care what I wear
I pack like a student, rolled, creased or flat

"Every day I take out what I'll wear for that day
At night I put dirty clothes away
In a plastic bag carried home to mother
That's a handy trick I learned from my brother

"What's left in the case is labelled, it's mine
So I'm always half-packed for the next time
Oh, Angela, you make far too much fuss
Just throw it all in and do it like us!"

TRANSLATE A WEBPAGE: Somebody else's travel page or your own website

Problem
I'm looking at a travel page for next year's chocolate show in Perugia, but it's all in Italian!

I know how to hunt for a page already translated into other languages. Most tourist boards and some big cities translate into one, two or three or more foreign languages.

An alternative is to find if they have a website for your country. That's why they have websites with dot com for the USA or worldwide in English, ending in co.uk in British English for travellers starting from the UK. Check the website heading. Usually your search Engine sends only sites in English.

French
It can be very annoying to do searches and keep opening websites in languages you don't speak. However, if you want a recipe for French onion soup, you might do well to search some French pages and translate them into English.

Equally, if a little town in Spain has no English website, try the Spanish website and translate it. You can quickly eliminate, using pictures and similar words, pages you don't need, such as campsites, if you are seeking landmarks and luxury hotels.

Wikipedia has editions in foreign languages. They have different text and often more photos.

Seeking The Translation For The English Language
I look for a tiny Union Jack for English. It could be top right - off the screen. Scroll right up. No? It might be far left? No? Bottom of the page? Maybe off the screen. Scroll down. Nope?

Am I on the tourist board's website home page, or have I landed on a later page? Go back to the website's home page and check there. Check they way you search a word puzzle or find the monkey in the woods puzzle, with a ruler on the screen.

They might have the words for another language such as English abbreviated to EN.

Can I read most of the page without help? Just one sentence which is relevant and needed?

Copy and paste into Google translate.

Google Translate
You get two boxes for the text. I copy the foreign language into the left.
Sometimes it's easier to switch the arrows at the top because the word English is already visible, remembered by the website from my previous use.

If the text is too long and complicated for you to follow, break it down into sentences or phrases. After each sentence, insert a space and then a page break. Divide any sentence which is too long.

If the translation is garbled, separate the individual words. Then check the alternative translation using the symbols at the bottom of the translation box. It brings up many phrases using the word.

Other Website Dictionaries
If you still can't get the sense of a word, go into an alternative online dictionary just for that one word.

Go to File, new window, top left of your screen and open another window. Keep open a tab for your existing page. Use the F3 key at the top of your keyboard to see all your windows at once and toggle (tap) between Translate Google and the dictionary.

Somebody has already created a page describing what to do in detail. No need for me to re-create the wheel.

Translating Your Own Website's Webpage
If you have a website on Wordpress, like my site www.luxurytravelforless.co.uk, you click on dashboard (below your website name in the tab at the to left of the screen), go down the left hand column to click on setup, the right hand popups include gtranslate and click on that. The pop up box now offers a list of language for you to click.

I did this with the help of son, Anthony, whose expertise is Search Engine Optimisation (marketing websites).

I selected half a dozen: English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, and Chinese (the script or symbols are also read by the Japanese).

Is the Fridge Working In Your Kitchen Or Rented Room Or Flat Or Condo?

Inside an Indesit mini fridge.

Problem
Fridge Check
A member of our family was phoned by a tenant who said their fridge was not working.

Answer
Making a call-out trip, the person checking found that the temperature control was wrong.

Next time, I shall run through a check list.
1 Check the plug is in and the switch is on.
2 Check the temperature light if any is on.
3 Read off the temperature.
4 Landlord - add a note about the correct temperature and type and print or photocopy from instruction book a checklist for faults to check before calling the landlord, agent, or repair company.

Setting A New Fridge
A new fridge usually has to be left standing for a day before it is used to let the 'liquid/gas' inside settle before the correct temperature be reached. If you turn it on too quickly, it works too hard to reach the right temperature and can break.

After that time elapse you can proceed.

Ask the person installing the fridge or showing you into your new or temporary home where the fridge is and what temperature it should be.

If you and / or any other adults and children have no head for numbers, print off the correct temperature setting and stick it on the fridge door with a magnet. All the users have to do is watch that the number on the fridge temperature guage matches the photo.

Bradstowe House in Harrow, Commuting, Ex-pats, Finding or Losing Friends' Addresses

Bradstowe House in the centre of Harrow was empty for months. Scaffolding. An eyesore. Everybody passing must be so pleased it is finished. I like the design, curves. Different.

Complete Community
Inside it now has one and two bed flats, two bed penthouses, and for the residents, a gym, a cinema and a lounge. No need to leave the building on a rainy day.

It would have been nice for residents to have a swimming pool. Maybe they have plans. Maybe they will, one day. (Failing all else, residents can join one of two nearby gyms with pools which are in Harrow, Golds and Fitz, currently lowest price is about £25 a month for a first or second membership. Plus the public leisure centre, Harrow Leisure Centre.)

Many blocks in Singapore, known as flats, when they have few facilities, condos when they provide much more, have gardens with benches, fish ponds, fountains, swimming pools, communal lounges you can hire, open spaces where you can erect marquees for weddings, national holidays, charity events, rows of shops and services (doctor, convenience store - in the UK called a corner shop since they used to be on corners), creche, primary school. Every group of buildings has a Community Centre with tennis court or tarmac sports area in front, meeting room with table, display cabinets, storage cabinets, pull down screens, computers, indoor sports hall, art exhibits along walls (some static, some constantly changing). Often a coffee shop and cafeteria or restaurant.

Unique Blocks Or matching Blocks?
I like the Bradstowe house design from the outside, in isolation. I must admit Bradstowe House with its stepped curves does not in any way match the building beside with brown bricks and triangular top gables.

Useful buildings
The latter building was previously an office building. It was a public service. It was very useful for the community. It was a tax office for everybody in Harrow.

Moving Offices Out of Town
I am annoyed that the tax office has moved out of Harrow to faraway Cardiff in Wales. No chance to go in to see somebody for advice. Instead letters can take over a week. Governments are selling off expensive land in city centres to raise money and moving out. The advantage, if any, is that they provide employment in rural areas. But city centres are getting more crowded. Rant over.

Victorian And Edwardian Terraces
Bradstowe house may seem a novelty in Harrow, surrounded by the two storey terrace houses. But Singapore has every big building different. We used to build long lines of identikit terraces, grander ones such as those in Bath, and the Nash Terraces in London's Regent Park. They may look pretty in pictures. But they are a nuisance when you are trying to find your way.

I drove along a long row of houses in Hampstead, NW London, once, looking for friends who'd invited me for dinner. I an my partner both assumed the other one had the address, but neither of us had it. We'd been there before (with the right address first time). We lost our friends who had moved from Singapore to London, literally and metaphorically, on that night and forever. They moved yet again. Where are you Ash and Sarah? Bradstowe House, easy to find building, count the number of floors, that should not be a problem.

Same Block Confusion
Getting lost in identikit buildings is not just a problem in Victorian or Edwardian rows of similar houses. Nowadays skyscrapers march or stand in circles leaving the newcomer gawping in the middle wondering where friends and family live. When the blocks are all the same it wastes endless time, for the young children, for the elderly, for visitors, taxi drivers, parcel deliveries. I kept going into the wrong block where I live in Singapore for weeks, until I realise one has an oblong roof overhanging the entrance, the other has an arched entrance. One buildings is set back. Even that's not enough. Every week we have a visitor turning up twenty minutes late. They would not be able to spot that. You forget the number or can't see it until you get near. An estate with different blocks has to give buildings different. In Korea I've seen blocks painted different colours, with a different flower on each one. You can give somebody a business card with a picture and when they come to visit they can find you. Conclusion - new design - I like it.

Rooftop Terraces
I also like what looks like private of public outdoor spaces on the roofs, with protective edges. They need to be protected with high fencing or plants so that people can't get drunk at parties and lean over the edge, fall, be pushed, jump. We've seen several of these accidents in London in 2015.On the other hand, platforms can be useful in an emergency for escape.

Working Near Home
Working near home. Living near work. Why? Why not? The advantage to you, if you live in the new skyscraper in the city centre, is that you are near transport to your place of work. You may even be able to walk home.

At one point planners divided cities into residential and commercial. Commercial was not allowed to invade residential areas, creating noise, pollution, ugly buildings. People were able to go home, away from their place of work and forget about it, living in a specious, less crowded area with green trees. However, the workers had stressful journeys increasingly expensive, and with more traffic, increasingly long.

Rental only or Mixed Office and Residential
Bradstowe House - I thought might be offices, or flats for sale, or a mixture, like Singapore, with offices on ground floor, and flats above two people could live above their workplace and go downstairs for shopping or dining out or services. No, not what I had hoped, I went onto their website and it's rental property.

Rental Price
To me it seems expensive. The price on the website is quoted in weekly rental. You have to multiply by four to get the monthly rental and compare it what you see in newspapers and on property websites.

However, I like the design. It's a centrepiece on the roundabout. It's a landmark. If you live there, people would find you easily. It's very near the railway and bus stations to both central London and outlying areas. Great for workers.

Medical Care nearby
Also for accidents, emergencies, and ongoing or temporary problems. Sports injuries - sports and road accident injuries can be treated by a sports physio at a nearby gym. (I was sent there for physio after another car shunned mine and the other vehicle's insurance sent my for physio for arm and shoulder problems.)

In a civil trouble you are near a hospital. The pregnant or the retired are near a hospital. The bus routes go to the nearest hospital, Northwick Park, plus the less known adjacent buildings where people are isolated, eg for cancer treatment when radiation gives you a low immune system. Two shopping malls are a few steps away.

I went away and forgot the name and had to take a picture. It needs a building name. memorable names stick, such as London's The Gherkin. How about calling Bradstowe House - The C u r v e r y?  Too similar to Carvery. Make it shorter. and less easy to confuse with anything else The Curvy? The Ellipse? The Harrow Ellipse?

House hunting in Singapore for Expats - top tips

What is the difference between an apartment and a condo?
In Singapore flat, apartment and condo are used as technical terms. A flat is basic and small. An apartment is larger.

A condo, usually occupied by more affluent ex-pats has facilities socialising and sports facilities such as a swimming pool, sauna, spa bath, squash courts, tennis courts, a gym, an outdoor children's playground, a waterfall and landscaping in modern blocks. Indoors are meeting rooms or function rooms for parties and entertaining.

An HDB is near an MRT because the residents are less likely to have cars. Also a hawker centre is likely to be nearby to provide cheap eating. A hawker centre has stall around communal tables and mostly stools rather than chairs, often outdoors or in an open-sided area in clusters on the ground floor of the housing blocks.

What affects price, facilities and size?

Price
High floors with better views and less traffic noise are likely to be more expensive. Completely redecorated will be more expensive. Swimming pool is likely to mean more expensive.

Size
Older buildings are likely to have bigger rooms and a maid's room (a box room off the kitchen or scullery, with an adjacent toilet, small basin and shower.

A 'walk-up' flat has an outside staircase and no lift. This will be less expensive. So if you are young and fit and like exercise, that is a good option for saving money. However, a fit, young friend of mine warns, what seems an easy climb on a sunny day carrying nothing, is less fun on a regular basis during rain with two bag of shopping or a big box of equipment.

Also harder to bring in a pram, bicycle, toddler, or elderly relative. Another hazard if somebody likes a drink. Or might develop an injury such as twisting on ankle, pulling a hamstring, getting a hernia.

Pool pleasures and problems
My list n/f plus points inc dudes swimming pool. The perfect pool for me has waterfalls and trees. Steps you can walk down, instead of metal ladders, are convenient as well as attractive to look at. Some shade is good.

Negative Windows
Obscured view from windows - too narrow, darkened by an overlay designed to cut heat and stop light fading furnishings. Light obscured by nearby buildings feed away, or large block which blocks your view.

I like balconies to be protected. Other members of my family don't mind railings so long as the metal is painted white.

The other great problem is noise. Traffic from roads can be noisy on floors lower than 6 or 7. Up on floor 8 you might get a better view across the treetops and city.

The biggest problem is buildings sites which spoil the view and create dust and noise. Pile drivers are worst. A nearly finished building could mean shops and restaurants nearby. But check the dat when building works are likely to end.
