From Hanoi you can take one day tours to Halong Bay and to a former capital. However, the reception desk at the hotel in Hanoi told me that the south is far away and I would have to take a plane to Saigon.
If you look at a source such as Lonely Planet you will find something alternative such as taking a local bus, or hired motorcycle or bike.
Walking around Hanoi
We used google maps for a walking route from out hotel in Hanoi to the cathedral for midnight mass last Christmas eve.
Hanoi to Harrow - walking
The system took our home in Harrow, London, England,as the starting point, but told us there was no route available.
We clicked again a few minutes later at the next turning, and the same thing happened, the route from Hanoi to Harrow, this time walking. It took several days, gave you every right and left turn, told you some routes through other countries were dangerous, and at one point there was congestion!
Ah - the magic of google maps. When we were students no such thing existed. How wonderful to be alive in 2018-2019. If we live another decade, the world will be an even more wonderful place.
We flew (at our own expense) on VietJetair, a budget airline, about which more later.
More details on the Sunline Paon, Japanese run hotel, later.
