Spanish words

The colours and motif of the flag of Spain superimposed on the outline map of Spain.

Spanish is also spoken in the Canary Islands and other islands such as Majorca and Minorca many South American countries, and Mexico and as a first or second language in much of the USA.
Spanish is a romance language, similar to Italian and Portuguese. Also. As a bonus for learners  lots of words resemble French and English, from the shared root of Latin.

Sunday is the day for the big push to learn more words and phrases on Duolingo, the free language teaching website.

Why Learn Spanish?

Although I have logged onto about twenty languages on Duolingo, I am concentrating on Spanish this year,

Firstly  it is the easiest language, quickest to learn, of the big three spoken widely worldwide, if you are an English speaker.

Secondly, in preparation for a trip to Spanish islands in the Canaries.

Many Spanish words look like shortened versions of English words.

dia - day

clase - class (ese classe - that class)

A or an, means any, one of that type. The, or that or this, a specific one.)

Translating from Spanish to English is easy. But what about English to Spanish. Sixteen words. Let's start with the easy ones.

1 Taxi - taxi - the same.

2 cultural - cultural

Add the letter a to

3 alarm = alarma

4 Problem - problema

5 fruit - fruta - add the vowel a and drop the vowel i

6  day - dia - I find it easier to remember buenos dias, so from that I get the singular dia, changing the y to i, again simplifying the English

Easy and useful Spanish words

Flag of Spain

Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn if you speak English. (Or if you speak Italian or Portuguese.)

Many countries speak Spanish, so you can start using it there, picking up the accent. Or use it there to improve your Spanish and make use of what you already know and practice it.

Spanish is spoken in Spain in Europe, as well as in Gibraltar and Andorra. Offshore are the inhabited islands of Mallorca,, Minorca, and the Canaries - Grand Canaria and Tenerife.

Spanish is spoken in most countries in South America, such as Venezuela, with the exception of Brazil where Portuguese is spoken.

In the USA Spanish appears on signs and is widely spoken as a first or second language. It is also spoken in Mexico, Cuba, and several Caribbean countries such as Puerto Rico, and central American countries such as Belize.

The written accents are easier than French. You have only one accent. It indicates that you stress the syllable. The accent goes diagonally upwards.
