Why? Because the airport has made huge losses during the pandemic.
What if you refuse to pay? Huge 80 pound fine, (numberplate recognition) reduced to 40 pounds if you pay up quickly.
When can you pay? In advance, at the time or within a short time afterwards, next day by midnight.
Can anybody avoid paying? Or get reductions?
Yes. Emergency services, Military, certain disabled blue badge holders (discount - must register - you need the car registration number).
Please check before travelling because I may have misunderstood, not given the full facts, or the rules may change.
Any way to avoid paying?
You don't pay for pick-up, only for drop-off, so you will pay only once on a round trip.
You can go to a long stay car park, pay for that, and take a shuttle bus. This requires you to limit your number of pieces of luggage to something easy to manage and move.
There is no pay machine to slow you down on arrival. You can pay in advance online, or through your phone.
Hm - I have had a few setback trying to pay using a phone. I would rather pay in advance on line.
