Moshe Schulhof Sings Best Yiddish Song Rumania Rumania by Aaron Lebedeff. Excellent!!! To...

I returned from visiting romantic Romania, extolled in this song, where I had learned that their name is connected to the fact that their neighbour across the sea to the west is Rome. Rome, capital of Italy. The Romanian language is a Romance language, making it easy for them to learn English (hence so many of them, and their food shops in London. Surprise, surprise, it is also easy for us English speakers to learn Romanian.

For physical visitors Romania has a major tourist attraction of the castle feuistaturing Dracula, (based on historical Vlad, who the Romanians say was nasty but no worse than other rulers of that era). The castle is in,the centre of a cafe-filled and village on the outside of their next big attractive city, Brasov, from which you can visit walled castle cities adorned with colourful paintings, and a nascent wine industry. I looked for some Romanian music and discovered this unexpected gem,. Plump and jolly singer Moshe (Yiddish for Moses) leads a group of diners or drinkers in a song about love of Romanian food, and general jollity, including flirting.

I later found another version of the song by the man who wrote the words, Lebedeff, also a fine singer. But this version with the dancing is great to watch. Also a lesson in body movement and mime, for me and others interested in public speaking and enthralling an audience. he engages his audience, walking to and fro, touching one of them, opening his arms wide. The music starts slowly and plaintively, speeds up, emphasized the rhythm, rising to a crescendo.

In the background, to the right of the screen, is an impressive violinist, who the singer thanks at the end, inviting the live audience to applaud.

It is a pity this was not remade twenty years later, and has not yet received the benefit of technology which I hope will one day restore it to better colour, and sharpness.

Music by Aaron Lebedeff.
A video of Lebedeff is in a later post.
