My family has been keeping a list of French words which pop up in English. We have found more than 300, not counting  food and words used in cookery.

Wikipedia has many more. But a lot of them are obscure.

Flanders and Swan wrote and performed an amusing song in which all the rhymes were Fench words.

Did you miss the New Year's Day Concert, broadcast by the BBC from Vienna?

Problem
My family in Singapore missed their favourite New Year's Day activity, watching the concert from Vienna, Austria, with ballet dancing accompanying the music, pictures of the grand concert hall, an informative commentary on the music, musicians and city, and sometimes a travelogue around Vienna or Austria. Unfortunately, the BBC broadcasts, even if you have paid your license fee in the UK, are not available in outside the UK, as the notice on your screen informs you.

Answer
Fortunately, the concert is available on the iplayer for late watching throughout January. So, if you are returning home to the UK after New Year, or staying with a family in the UK which has BBC iplayer available, you can watch the concert.

Do you really want to watch it? You can find out by watching the brief trailer on YouTube.

We love the concert. The broadcast includes the grand gilded building adorned with flower displays, moments of glamour from the ballet costumes, skill from the dancers. The music is usually upbeat and the happy mood is often accentuated by humour from the conductor interacting with members of the orchestra.

You can re-live or revive your memories of a previous year's event and get a glimpse of the next one as a reminder to put it in your diary to watch it when you get the chance.

French words: say ballet but don't forget etiquette

Say ballet but don't forget etiquette. Words used in English, derived from the French, which still used the French pronunciation, often puzzle those who have not learned French, but seem obvious to anybody who has learned French.

ET
Ballet and other words ending with et are pronounced 'ay'.

Words ending with e t t e are pronounced like bet, forget, met and yet

banquette - bench seat with padding and a back usually against a wall
briquette - small brick, food or loaf with brick shape
etiquette - polite behaviour conforming, originally a ticket to an event at court specifying the rules such as the dress code, for example, black tie

tête-á-tête - literally head to head, cosy chat .(I just inserted the circumflexes and the accent on 'a' but the spellchecker removed them. I've added the hyphens and hope that makes the difference.)

Minsk, Marx, Chagall and Belorussia

When I think of Minsk and Belorussia I see Chagall's visions of idyllic flowers and calm cows and bedecked brides and villagers arm in arm, dancing through their simple happy lives in the nearby villages. And the cities, with their grand gold  domes and stately buildings, magical centres of learning and opera, and the humour. The stoic yokels and cultured writers.

That is the romantic view. But what can you see today? A street called Karla Marksa. Who would that be? But let's start with the museums.

Here's my wish list. M i n s k e r s (predictive text wants to replace with ministers) and tourists can enjoy about twenty museums including those in the list below:

Street Names
Regarding finding your way about and language, they seem to add the letter a onto everything which makes life easy. For example, The Museum of Nature (etc) is in Karla Marksa street. Ah. Karl Marx.
The State Literary Museum of Maxim Bogdanovich is in Maxima Bogdanovicha street. The State Literary Museum of Yanka Kuala is in Yanki Kupaly street.

Chagall
The Marc Chagall Museum is in Vitebsk. If you can't make it to Belorussia, or want to do a grand tour of Chagall sites in more than one country, there's a Chagall Museum in France. (See TripAdvisor.)

Vitebsk is also associated with the classic haunting tale of The Dybbuk, written by Ansky.

French words of the day - ricochet, maquette, statuette

French words of the day - maquette, after a maquette of Ted Hughes, and ricochet. The word ricochet came up in a wonderful quotation from Ted Hughes' wife, American poet, the late Sylvia Plath, wife of the late Ted Hughes. His mini statue has just been placed in his honour in a pub in Yorkshire, north England. (See my previous post.)

Words ending in et from from the French are pronounced ay.
The feminine ending e t t e is pronounced et rhyming with yet.
Here are some words ending with et or  e t t e . I have to insert spaces because the spell checker automatically converts the word into tête . Ironically I cannot find the word tete but up it pops automatically when I type e t t e ! Just press on the e key on the keyboard of your computer or laptop and hold it down and you get the choice of accents.

Glossary French-English
ballet - Dance of men and women, traditional wearing tights, ladies in a tutu
ballet shoes - Flat soft shoes with rounded toes, often with a bow on the tow on the edge which meets the exposed foot. Flexible underneath so dangers can bend the foot to stand on tiptoe when pirouetting.
bouquet - bunch of flowers
maquette - scale model
matinée - Early afternoon starting performance on stage, theatre, musical, ballet, from the word morning which is matin.
pirouette - lady dancer spinning around on one toe with the other leg raised and bent with the toe against the knee, usually wearing a tutu
ricochet - rebound
soiree - evening get together, from s o i r for night (spaces inserted because spell check thinks the word should be sour)
statuette - small statue (usually of a person, sometimes an animal)
tutu - a very short circular skirt which is or becomes horizontal like a disc around the female dancer's waist, most often white stiffened net or fabric, with or without supporting petticoats

The French flag is known as the tricolour in English and the t r i c o l o r e  in French. (Sorry, but I had to spell it with spaces otherwise the website's spellchecker keeps changing it.) The name means three colours. For an explanation of the symbolism see French flag in Wikipedia.

Any word ending in euro is likely to be French in origin. Also look out for word endings such as et ... ballet, bouquet, croquet, duvet, all pronounced 'ay', or ette - baguette, banquette, serviette, silhouette, all rhyming with bet, get, met, set. I'm thinking about banquet, which seems to break the rule.

A courier - a carrier, a person who carries goods or documents from place to place
premiere - (I saw this in yesterday's paper as premier in English) important first, first night or showing of a play or performance, first in the list of a group of people, or their president or representative  eg he is the premiere of ... (think premium brand).

New Year's Day - Vienna Concert and London Parade

New Year's Day Concert from Vienna
The New Year's Day Concert from the golden hall in Vienna featured music by the Strauss family (father Johann and three sons) and was conducted this year by jovial Indian Mehta, very dapper. It was broadcast on the BBC1 lunch time today, can be seen again on the iplayer and/or caught on BBC3 radio BBC4 tv. It features scenes of Vienna and Austria.

Here is Strauss senior, also known as Johann Strauss I. His three sons were Johann Strauss II, Josef and Eduard.

Matching the music, the dancing was mesmerising, modern, elegant, amusing, flowing. The girls tiptoe or are tossed in the air effortlessly by the boys.

Costumes, as usual are wonderful. Starting with the dramatic black and white 'students' ballet. Finishing some gorgeous flimsy, flowing red and white dresses with black ribbons, each dress subtly different.

The opening music was the best, and the finale of Johann Senior's stirring Radestsky March.

New Year's Day Parade
Next on TV was the New Year's Day Parade. In London, the frost has disappeared but although warmer, it is chillingly cold. According to news reports crowds were out, despite the weather, to see the parade. I'm happy not to be there, just watching on the internet.
