Tune In To Local Radio When Travelling - Lessons Learned from country songs

When you go to another country or another county on the UK, tune into the local radio station as you drive along that dull motorway. Why?
1 It will keep you awake so you avoid accidents; you can sleep at night.
2 It will be an entertainment on a dull motorway.
3 It will be a social education.
4 You will be up with the local and worldwide news, well-informed, in touch with local people, which endears you to them and helps you develop rapport and sympathy and enjoy their company.
5 You have a subject of conversation when you meet people at the other end.
6 You will be energised.
7 You will be calmed.
8 You will be optimistic.
9 You will not be wasting time driving.
10 You don't have to talk to entertain the passengers and drivers.



UK
 In the UK you can tune your car radio to radio 3 for classic music and 4 for talks. if your car or coach is stuck you can keep everybody amused with rounds of classic songs. At school and on holiday I would hear English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh classics such as: When Irish eyes are smiling; In Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty ...(Molly Malone); I lost my darling Clementine. Bring back my bonny to me; A Gordon For me; You take the high road and I'll take the low road and I'll be in Scotland before thee; Men of Harlech. Old Lang Syne.

You can do a Beatles tour in London or Liverpool. the Beatles music and songs and stories are everywhere.


USA
When I went to live in the USA music was even more strongly promoted everywhere. I always feel very stirred and emotional when I hear: My (or mine) eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord ...

My mind automatically fills in the next line
They are treading out the vineyards where the grapes of wrath are stored ....

Here are some of my experiences when travelling.

I found relics of Elvis in many cities, cars and guitars, not only in Graceland.

In Opryland where I went to write about the hotel and the museums the staff had tuned the bedroom radio to play country music when I opened the door of the hotel bedroom.

Dolly Parton. Jim Reeves. Garth Brooks. The Dixie Chicks.

That's why I hang my hat in Tennessee.

There is a house in New Orleans

Chicago, Chicago.

New York, New York. My kind of town.

Shuffle off to Buffalo.

I get my kicks on route 66.

AROUND THE USA
Diving through the USA I heard a lot of country music. I picked up a lot of Americanisms by listening to talk shows and songs.

I learned to love country and western songs for their comments on life, stories, and sometimes smart twist ending.

Everybody who speaks English is likely to have heard the traditional songs from George and Ira Gershwin, and all the musicals such as Oklahoma, Elvis classics - Bob Dylan's Blowing in the Wind, Bridge over troubled water, the Everly Brothers, plus more modern classics such as Cabaret, and Hallelujah.

When I visited the Stephen Forster Memorial Museum I was amazed by the number of American songs I had learned as a child in the UK. For example:

Where can you see a replica of Noah's Ark? And eat vegan Noah's Pudding?

A giant reproduction of Noah's Ark in the USA, in Grant County, Kentucky. I kid you not. You can check out the visitors on Tripadvisor.

It is not the only one. There's another constructed in the Netherlands which the constructor hopes to sail to Israel. Meanwhile, however, the one in the USA is in the country with the whole history of Disney and theme parks.

What else is there to see in Kentucky, famous for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Fried Chicken, KFC.

As for the original of Noah's Ark, a mountain called Mount Ararat, in Turkey-Armenia, has a flat top, a bit like the mountain which dominates Cape Town in South Africa.  The mountain features in the coat of arms of Armenia.

The Bible gives the length of the ark as 300 cubits. Various cubits were in use in antiquity,^[2] but to be considered "full-scale", an Ark replica would have to be somewhere in the range from about 135 to upward of 150 meters long (ca. 440 to 500+ feet).

• Johan's Ark in Dordrecht, Netherlands.^[3] 137 meters (450 ft) long and carried on a platform made up of 25 LASH barges, this is the only full-scale Ark interpretation that is actually floating and mobile.^[4]
• Noah's Ark theme park at Ma Wan Island, Hong Kong. This interpretation is also 137 meters (450 ft) long.^[5]
• Ark Encounter theme park located on a hill in Grant County, Kentucky, United States. It is 155 meters (510 ft) long.^[6]

Noah's Pudding in Armenia At Xmas and New Year
When Noah landed he made a pudding of 7 or 10 ingredients, a porridge with fruits and nuts, which you might eat on the tenth day of a certain month. The dish in English is called Noah's Pudding and in Arabic, Persian and other languages it is called Ashure meaning tenth.
Wiki says:
The Armenian version is called anuşabur. Armenians serve it during Christmas and on New Year's Eve. Like ashure it may be garnished with pomegranate seeds and flavored with rose water, and the pudding is shared with neighbors during the Christmas season. The festive pudding is the centerpiece of the New Year's table, which is often decorated with dried fruits, nuts and pomegranates.^[12]
Also very popular in the Muslim calendar and in Muslim countries.



Argentina's Holy Land Theme Park
Tierra Santa is a large reproduction where visitors can walk the streets of Biblical Jerusalem, living step by step scenes from the life of Jesus as described in the Bible. Cultures represented include Christians, Jews, and Romans. A 18 metres (59 ft) Jesus rises from behind a rock every hour, on the hour,^[2] a solemn religious experience for many visitors, but also provoking derision on the Internet as kitschy.^[3] The park also includes statues of several 20th century historical figures such as Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa, according to park staff were included because they were historic figures who "fought for peace" and that the park also wanted to also pay tribute to them.^[3]

Noah's Ark in Kentucky

I was just writing about the American Printing for the blind museum in Kentucky, when I came across Noah's Ark.

That said, Noah's Ark was an entrancing story I head in my childhood and like many people I am fascinated by it. I an enjoy the painted image of Noah's ark, a wooden toy for children, and a huge toy for tourists.

Braille Signs In Your Lift - and Braille in Singapore, France and the USA

Many lifts when upgraded have added the Braille signs.

Here are the ones from Cashew Heights in Singapore, a series of skyscrapers 12-16 storeys high, 30 years old, with apartment units up to four bedrooms often containing one or more residents over 50.

The couples with small children are often visited once a year or more by elderly relatives from overseas.

The point is that not only the residents but any visitors can find out where the lift is going and register the floor they are visiting and check if they have stopped at the right floor. The lifts also have robotic voices announcing the floor number on arrival.

The first thing I noticed in the lifts, before the Braille was installed, is the strange way, strange to me from the UK, of ordering the lift buttons. I would expect the buttons to go up in a line. But two is to the right of one. All the odd numbers are on the left. All the even numbers are on the right.

More About The Invention Of Braille
Braille was a blind teenager at school near Paris when he started workign on his system to communicate with his schoolfriends. He adapted his raised dots for the blind from a system used by the military at night. When they could not see at night, before the days of electricity and battery torches, they would use raised dots. Another reason for using dots, was that you did not want to speak at night and give away your position to the enemy.

Louis Braille, the inventor of Braille.

Braille experimented as a child at school with communicating with his friends. The sighted teachers did not want the pupils to have a secret way of communicating not known to the teachers. But eventually Braille's system caught on amongst the blind school age pupils and adults so the sighted people had to learn it and could see that it was a success.

Now there is an increasing campaign to get sighted people to learn sign language and Braille in order to communicate with blind people. Learning sign language and Braille when you are young has a second advantage for the learner. It also means that if you lose sight later in life you already have the language at your fingertips, literally, and have less of a challenge learning and can cope immediately with daily life.

Side Trips From Edinburgh: Bruce and the Spider and Tartans and Shortbread in Scotland

Problem
What to see and do in Scotland?

Answer
My side trips from Edinburgh included Lockerbie, a puppet place and Bruce and the Spider.
When? According to Wikipedia the first Robert the Bruce came over with William the Conqueror in 1066. He hid in a cave from people hunting from him.

Actually he hid from the English. But the story is told in England to schoolchildren without mentioning this inconvenient fact. Scotland and England were united by a later King, in 1707, hence the Union Jack flag.

Alone and depressed, on the run, hidden by a friend in a cave, Robert was inspired by the persistence of a spider.

I saw a spider. Not Bruce's spider. Spiders don't live that long. Maybe a descendant. I could have asked. But I can't read spider sign language.

I didn't see the spider at first. It was still. Playing dead. Invisible units web. I expect that's how it catches flies.

Bruce was literally holed up for a long time. I was surprised to see a small, empty cave. What had I expected? A film show? Well, it might have been like that underground cave in the USA with a complete underground cafeteria. (Mammoth Cave in Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky.)

 The Scottish cave wasn't that large nor furnished with conveniences in Bruce's day, nor is it today. The cave is just  a small one person cave. No lighting. Nothing. Dark, cold, depressing. Just as it must have been for Robert the Bruce.

I later researched Robert the Bruce's cave. Half a dozen places have Robert the Bruce's cave. It is not totally unlikely that once he got the idea of hiding in a cave, he made a habit of it, until he became king and could live in a palace.

I then looked for a photo of Robert the Bruce and found he lived in the 1300s. Oops. Oh dear. I can't spend all day sorting through a dozen accounts of Robert the Bruce. I was interested to see the reconstruction of a face from a skull, supposedly proving he had leprosy.

Tartans and Tatties
I wanted to buy tartan to wear to give a talk on seeing Scotland and Robert the Bruce. The main shops I expected to have bargains like the Edinburgh Woollen Mill (which has outlets all over Britain) had no tartans in my budget. They tended to sell complete outfits, or he assistant pointed out that you needed the correct white blouse, and the shawl, plus for the gentleman, socks with a tartan or matching feather, a sporran, a cap, a jacket.

I was also worried about buying the wrong tartan. The one I wanted with jolly red was a clan tartan. The clans have got very clannish. You are not supposed to by a clan tartan unless you are a member of the clan. It's like a military uniform. Impersonating, like wearing the old school tie of a school you didn't go to. So you have to buy a general tartan. I like Black watch. I don't think anybody would really think I was with the Black Watch.

 There's a Jewish tartan. I don't suppose anybody would want it unless they were Jewish or doing a comedy turn. Ah, there's an idea.

I ended up finding a tartan in a charity shop.
