Singapore Moving Home & Furniture - Building Protection 

 In Singapore when you moved in or out of a block of flats - and most of Singapore consists of high rise blocks, precautions were taken to prevent damage to the building. Several times a year you got into the lift and it looked like a padded cell.

Public Floors' Protection

Incoming and outgoing tenants had to inform the management, book the dates and times, and pay for the installation of protection. Runners were laid on the floor from the parking area to the building, over to the lift, inside the lift, down the corridor to the unit doorway. 

Lift Protection

Inside the lift, all four walls and the ceiling were protected  with padding, attached to hooks inside the lift which you would not normally notice. (An alternative in areas without hooks is a heavy duty removable tape.) Windows with see-through covering allowed you to use the lift buttons and emergency buttons.

Doorways were also protected.

In my opinion removal companies should have three things

1 A trained supervisor in charge of the moving staff.

2 Insurance against damage.

3 Equipment to protect doorways, walls, and floors . Tools for removing and re-fixing doors to allow access for large items. 

4 Advance survey of photos or videos of the building, parking access, and sizes of large items to be brought in or taken out.

5 Notification of building porter or manager to get parking space cordoned off for large vehicles.

Holland and The Netherlands - Upper Floor Access

In Holland large items like pianos are hoisted to upper floors outside the building and through a large window at the top.

Search the web and you will find videos of companies in the USA showing you what to do and what you can buy from them. From the UK you can find websites of items to buy.

My Experiences

Moving an American style large double door fridge freezer in and out can be a problem.

 One set of movers went off in a huff.

1 They could not park near enough as visitors had occupied all the spaces near the entrance.

2 They were daunted by the nine steps into the building. Which we had notified the sellers of the fridge, but the moving contractor's staff maintained that they had not been informed.

3 They said there was a danger of damage to the kitchen door and door jamb. 

Surely that is their job, to be prepared to allow time to install protection of the doorway, to carry it with them, to have tools to remove the fridge door to make it smaller and lighter. To have tools to remove the kitchen door to make more space.

What might the landlord or householder need or do?

1 Buy and put down waterproof floor runners.

2 Install or ask the porter or caretaker of the building to put up temporary No parking portable bollards.

3 Have protection for the walls and doorways. Buy it. If all else fails, keep a supply of 

a) bubble wrap, 

b) wine bottle covers, 

c) thick bath towels - old ones

d) cardboard boxes such as Amazon delivery boxes and furniture moving boxes

Looking at Lace in France and Belgium, and Tapestry Embroidery in England and Wales

Lovely Lace

 I love lace. But white lace doileys look old fashioned. You can dye them colours. Use them as collars, neck fillers or dickeys.

Lace can be made with strong thread, fine thread, or a mixture.

Black lace can be worn as a sophisticated evening fashion. 

It can add delicacy and distraction at a funeral or time of mourning.

You can create lace with a crochet hook. 

Or several bobbins (long heavy holders of thread which are hung down from a hump and moved around in a fan shape, semi circular or circular, like weaving, to create the patterns.

A third type of lace is machine made lace.

You can buy huge table cloths entirely of lace, or lace trimmed tablecloths and matching napkins. 

The History of Lace

A queen, Catherine de Medicis, took lace from Italy to France. (The country of Belgium was created by Queen Victoria's family to console a aspiring king of England who was bypassed and had to be made king of somewhere. I learned that they chopped a piece off France and a piece off Holland and made Belgium, which at first went well. However, reading Britannica, it appears that the whole area was bounced around like a football between France, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain. It now has a clear identity, but three languages, French, Belgian and German for the German speaking  minority in the East, with French in the capital Brussels, as well as the EU and NATO providing employment.  Belgian lace.

New Bike? Saddle up! Tips on buying Parts, Clothing, Helmets, Locks, Magazines, Bars, Events

After you have spent money on your bike, mountain bike, motorbike, or scooter, your next purchases are upgrades, accessories and clothes. Trevor is a keen biker, motorbikes and mountain bikes. He has done training courses on circuits with champions. He avidly watched YouTube videos on riding. Taking corners. How to balance on a motorbike differs from balance on a mountain bike. How to repair or adjust or upgrade the parts of your bike.

Bike Lock

Before you even go out on your bike, shopping in an urban area, you need a security lock. The locks are attached to a thick black part which you attach to something strong and immovable such as a railing.

The bigger, stronger ones, which resist a little bolt cutter, are more expensive, thicker, and heavier to carry. 

Some areas or a town or city are more prone to theft than others.

After buying your lock, or upgrading it, next you need your clothes to go out.

Cycling Clothes - Shorts

'Bikers like to wear close, thigh-gripping shorts when cycling. If you wear loose shorts, they tend to get caught on the front of the saddle when you get on and off.'

Motorbike Clothes

Motorbike clothes have more protection Padded knees and elbows. Hot to wear.

Expensive. Look at them in a shop. Are the seams sewn securely. Sealed. Is there lining? Padding? 

Ask the assistant for advice. Then buy more in the sales. 

Eventually the stitching of gloves and suits will go. Or you fall off and a layer of the leather or fabric has scraped off. That's good. That would have been your skin if you had not worn the protection. It has done its job. It is worth the money. But time to buy another one, or bring out the spare.

You might want to carry a rainproof poncho. A rainproof poncho is hot and sticky. So you have to look for a safe place to pull in when it rains to don the outfit. Wait in the shelter. 

Motorways in Singapore have shelters for bikers under some bridges. Look for the umbrella sign. The same applies in Malaysia.

You can also buy a tiny umbrella to cover your mobile phone.

Helmets

You might want a spare helmet for a passenger. If two members of your family share a motorbike, and occasionally you go out together.

'If you already have a bike, then you buy a motorbike, you need another helmet. The same applies the other way. For a helmet, you obviously need adequate protection. But cycling helmets are not the same as motorbike helmets. Motorbike helmets have to be much stronger. You are likely to fall off a bicycle, but you could be catapulted through the air from a motorbike. Motorbike helmets have a visor protecting your face. They are heavier to wear. 

'A cycling helmet for a bicycle, or mountain bike, just covers your head. Then you wear a face mask when you walk into a shopping mall.'

Branded Scooter/Motorbike parts - real or fake?

'I have been buying parts to upgrade an old motorbike and an old bike. You go on the internet and you can see the prices for branded goods are high from the manufacturers. What are the branded goods made of? 

'If you saw gold at a very cheap price, you would suspect it was gold-plated or an alloy.  The same applies to the metals in component parts.

'Is it really titanium or stainless steel or aluminium? Is it strong enough? Flexible enough? Rustproof? 

Brand Names

'I sometimes draw up alongside a scooter at the lights. I can see that parts on a cheap Scooter have famous brand names. I see parts which cost as much or more than a second hand scooter. That's absurd.

'I don't know whether the owner knows the parts are fake and just wants to look good.  Or whether the owner has been misled by the fake goods. 

Buyer Beware

'When I buy, I look down to the specifications. If you saw something advertised as a diamond in the headline, but under product description, you read cubic zircona, you would know it's not a real diamond. If it says diamond in the headline and doesn't specify what it is in the product description, again, that's a warning sign. When buying parts, I compare the manufacturer's specifications, then I compare Lazada and Amazon.  

I have had more success with Amazon. But no website can be 100% guaranteed. It's not their fault. They have hundreds of items from third parties. They can't check every one. You can return goods. Keep the packaging. Look at it before you open it. Keep the labels and packing slips.

I often lose track of where I ordered an item from. It arrives from some address overseas. 

(Angela's note: I have the same problem with clothes. Did I order from Amazon, Lacada, Ebay, Etsy, Shein? The solution is to to keep a copy of purchases in your diary, or a dedicated notebook, or a folder, or in notes on your mobile phone. I write down what the item looked like on arrival, and a month after use. I give feedback and note it. Also, I add anything I didn't say in the feedback, such as I didn't like the look of it when it arrived, or it looked great. I might change my mind later. This is not only useful when you want to return the item. It is handy if you want to re-order for a friend, as a gift, or for yourself as a replacement or spare or another colour a year later.)

Finally, photograph everything. Yourself on the bike when it is new to prove it is yours. (A thief could claim you have stolen the bike from him when you try to retrieve it!)

You might want a picture to show at a mall or airport or police station when reporting the bike or helmet or key is missing. Or even a missing person. Insurance might want a picture of it. You might want to show that the bike was new and got damaged in the car park or on the plane or bike repair shop.  They can't say that parts of the item, or paintwork, was damaged already when you left it if you have a photo showing it in pristine condition hours before.

In Singapore you can hire bikes, Segway (Single large wheel vehicle).

Cycling alone is lonely. But in November 2021 the rules have changed to allow up to 5 persons from different households to meet up. Please check the latest regulations.

See These Cities Before They Sink! London's Thames Barrier, Sinking cities. Jakarta.

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is sinking and has already been moved. What about the rest of the world?  Global warming is causing temperatures to rise, overall. In the short term, this is good news. England is growing grapes for wine making. We have grapes in our garden in London. 

On the other hand, speaking of London, the long-term view means flooding, and sinking.  Many cities on are on rivers. Capitals are built on rivers. Other major cities are seasides and harbours and ports. That's is where capitals grow and were planted long ago, before plane travel when people travelled by boat, inland on rivers, and trading and emigrating to ports or seeking shelter and replenishment in ports. 

In our lifetimes, in the twentieth and twenty first century, we have seen the growth of travel, trade and hospitality, museums, attractions, restaurants, tourism.

So, as holiday-making travellers, which cities and capitals and countries are under threat? Which should we visit now, before they disappear? Which should we document on photos. 

As travellers interested in trade, in being citizens of the world, in importing ideas and helping other countries, what is new? What needs changing. Which places should we be campaigning to protect!

That said, Noah's Ark was an entrancing story I head in my childhood and like many people I am fascinated by it. I an enjoy the painted image of Noah's ark, a wooden toy for children, and a huge toy for tourists.

Need a country flag image for free? Can you identify these flags? Quiz!

Sometimes you need a country flag. It is useful to label a box file storing maps and leaflets before during or after a trip. You might want to add it to a blog as a heading.

But first you need to pick the right flag. Some are so similar. Lots of crosses on the Union Jack and Scandinavian flags, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland.

A flag which looks like the flag of the USA. 

Two countries with dragons. One is Wales. The other is?

Lots of stars.

How many? Which colour? How many points?

Union Jacks with stars for Australia and New Zealand. Which is which? Which flag has the most stars - which country?

You might recognize flags with red and white stripes. But that could be Monaco or Poland or Singapore or Malaysia. Red above or below? Anything added?

What about multiple stars? That could be the EU or Linguafranca.

What about red, white and blue? That's France. Or is it the Netherlands? Vertical or horizontal stripes?

Red yellow and black. That's Germany. Or is it Belgium?

Red white and green, easy peasy, Italy. But there's another red white and green flag. And red white and orange? Which is Italy? Which is Ireland? What is the third?
