Polish sklep - what is it?

I took this photo last time I was in Watford in North West London, England. We have many Polish people working in England and many shops selling Polish food.

I guessed that Polski means Polish. I wondered what the word sklep meant. Eventually I got round to looking up the translation on Google Translate. Sklep means shop. Once you know the translation, it's easy to remember.

Make a memory air for the look of the word skillet to shop and the similarity of the letters. Both words start with s and end with p. Another similarity between schlep and shop is that the k is a letter with an upright line on the left like h. The e joined up would be an o. The l is the shopkeeper standing in the middle to serve you.

Now try repetition. Sklep means shop. Sklep means shop. Sklep means shop. Autocorrect keeps trying to turn s k l e p into schlep. Yes you schlep to the sklep, schlep to the shop.

You could learn Polish on Duolingo.
