Three Scary Sights You Might See In Romania

Problem
What's dangerous and what's not? Pickpockets, road accidents, Dracula, mountain climbing ladders.

Answer
If you are afraid of pickpockets the simple answer is to avoid crowded trains and stick to hire cars. In the streets wear pickpocket proof clothing. A brand by that name has double fastenings. All pockets with valuables should have both a flap which hastens plus an inner zip pocket.

But here are some dangers you might not have thought of.

1 Dracula's Castle.
No escaping the grisly stuff. At the castle at Bram, a bustling tourist filled village near the pretty historic city of Brasov is a gorgeous castle. But the banners include a clear picture of somebody being impales. The staircase inside are steep and without handrails. Great photos of the castle and scenery.

Families with children were happily marching around smiling. I must be the only one shocked. It was less shocking than the article in Wikipedia I had read in advance. If you like the glory stuff two more castles have the Dracula theme. A bit like England's Queen Elizabeth slept here. The captions point out that Vlad the Impaler used no worse torture than the Spanish Inquisition, Henry VIII and many rules of his own era, previous eras and later eras.

For film buffs, there are panels about Bram Stoker, and the intrepid travels of the author, who was as adventurous in his era as we are travelling to foreign places today.

2 Road Accidents
In our first three days we saw one car upside down, two in a head on smash and one dead pedestrian being zipped into a body bag. Drive with care.

3 Seven Stairs
Spectacular, challenging and not for the faint hearted. A real novelty for walker and climbers. I enjoyed a very pleasant walk up the slope through the forest. Several walkers from my nearly 30 strong hiking group managed the seven vertical metal ladders leading to the view from the summit.

Of course, anybody used to climbing will take this in their stride, or climb.

Romania - actually romanic buildings, stunning architecture, amazing views, highly recommended for a holiday.
