Baku, Azerbaijan, Maiden Tower. Wikipedia.
Azerbaijan, the country's name, means land of fire. In ancient times people prayed to flames.
I met Kamal Aliyev. A l i y e v is a popular surname. (I had to insert spaces because the automatic spell checker turned the word into alive.) It means flame. The forename Kamal reminded me of the Turkish hero and leader Kemal Ataturk. Kamal means knowledge. He was very knowledgeable about his country and its history and told me all about it.
The capital is Baku. The two landmarks are one ancient building, the tower, and the new wave shaped building, like three waves or tongues of flame.
One of the three waves houses the luxurious Four Seasons hotel where you could stay. An alternative luxury hotel is the Boulevard Hotel on the waterfront.
What's Cheap or Free?
It costs only about £3 or less to go up the landmark tower.
Languages to Learn
In Azerbaijan the local language is almost the same as Turkish and they also speak Russian. You can learn either Russian or Turkish, whichever you would find easier or more interesting - try both - on Duolingo for free.
