Lisbon, capital of Portugal, is the place to go to see a statue of Portuguese Poet Pessoa. Take a hat to wear to match his.
The poet had a poor start in life. Lost his parent and a sibling whilst still a child. Not quite right physically.
As an adult he started a business which failed. Died relatively young.
Yet so much of his life is exciting, unusual and uplifting. He translated many English books into Portuguese. He wrote under pen names. He left many unfinished works.
He wrote:
Literature is the pleasantest way of ignoring life.
I am a keeper of sheep. The sheep are my thoughts.
Eat your chocolates, little girl,
Eat your chocolates!
Believe me, there's no metaphysics on earth like chocolates.
Eat your chocolates!
Believe me, there's no metaphysics on earth like chocolates.
