Spanish Words - Secrets To Remembering Them

 How to remember Spanish words? Find similar words in English with letters in common.

Spanish - English

bonita - pretty / beautiful b for beautiful, bon for good, it sounds like the ett in pretty)

cafeteria - cafeteria

diario - diary

entrar - to enter

el examen - the exam

hoy - today (OY hOY tOdaY)

invitado - guest (INVIT .DO INVITaDoO - INVITeD persOn)

llamaste - you called (double ll in both words, a in both words, S for Second person Singular, the same as Latin amo amas amat where amas is you love. ending e for the past, as in the English ed, called)

mercado - market (MERcAdo MAR K E, c and k sound alike, so do d and t)

la musica - the music (add a in Spanish)

muy - very - muy looks like MUch and verY

oceano (oh say arn oh, upward forward diagonal accent on the e) the ocean

roto - broken (letters RO ROto bROken)

ciencias - science (Science is a plural word in Spanish. Move the s from the start of the word to the end.

German words learned today: only

Today I have learned only a few words of German.

Anfanger - beginner - I think of the word amateur which is similar first two letters and last two letters
Besucher - visitor (think first letter B and V are similar, voiced and unvoiced, or ordinary and emphasised, and placed adjacent in alphabets such as Hebrew) last syllable er/or so v..or/er = visitor
Bürger - citizen (burgher) somebody in a burgh or borough or city. I only just realised that citizen comes from the word city, just as Bürger comes from Burg
Feind - enemy, opposite of friend although similar spelling. (I think of fiend - the vowels are reversed.)
Gast, Gäste - guest / visitor, guests/visitors
leute - people (I think of people loitering)
Mitglied - member (Notice the M starting Mitglied and Member. In the German it is a capital initial letter for a noun. I have used the capital M in the English just to draw attention to the letter M.
Nachbar - neighbour (both words start with N and the last syllable is b-r
nur - only (Notice the N in Nur and oNly)
Publikum - audience

toll - terrific, fantastic, great,

Favourite Singapore Restaurants: Fratini, Tanglin, Clubs and Gifts

The most personalised food and drink and service is supplied by Fratini. They should have a Michelin star. If they've got one, they should have two.

The dishes are a surprise. If you are visiting twice in a month, keep a note of what you ate and ask them for something different, or to repeat your favourite dish.

Here are my three current favourite restaurants:

3 Tanglin Club Tavern

If you are not a member of a club, you need a member of a club to invite you as a guest. Ex-pats often do return invitations. Somebody invites you to lunch at a club. (They pay and the cost goes on their monthly bill.) The guest who wishes to reciprocate can do so or offer the host the choice of one of the following:
1 Return invitation to another club the following week.
2 Return invitation to a restaurant the following week.
3 After a leisurely lunch going on to high tea or drinks in a nearby hotel or restaurant.
4 Invitation to a swim and a lunch or dinner at guest's condo home in Singapore, or home in another country.
5 Offering cash towards the cost. (Either offering or insisting.)
6 Taking a gift. (The Chinese and Japanese expect gifts to be wrapped in wrapping paper and tied with ribbon - even chocolates or a piece of cake - and presented with both hands and a bow of the head and maybe body, bowing lower in some cases depending on the status and seniority of the recipient.)
