Hotel Balcony Safety - and Keys - Locked out, climbed balcony, died - prevention?

A hotel bedroom key with a large fob, from Spain in 2024. Photo by Angela Lansbury, Copyright

This happens too often. What could be done?

Design balconies so you cannot climb from one to another, except as a fire escape beding bars to protect you from falling. Singapore makes cat owners install glass and/or barriers to stop cats jumping and killing themselves or people underneath so it is both practical and affordable.

Secondly, all residents sharing a room should be allowed a second key, or told they can call reception for an escort with a pass key or show iD or give their home address to get the room key.

If a key has a large heavy fb, you cannot lose the key,, and it is more likely to be left back at reception.

Learning Albanian For Your Holiday, Work, Fun, Curiosity: 10 handy words

I took a Lonely Planet guide with me to Albania. It has several languages and is small but quite thick and heavy. I considered cutting the spine in half.

I did not want to spoil the book. It seems sacrilege to spoil a book. I did not want it to disintegrate. I might need to use it again.

But it had not cost much. I had bought a cheaper second hand used copy.

I then realized I could cut out the Albanian pages, which were first in the book, which had arranged the languages alphabetically.

I cut out the pages and stapled them together. I had too many for one staple. So I used two for two sections. i could have made a cover for the new mini book, in thicker paper to protect it, but I just put it in a see through zip lock bag.

The print is small, hard to read at night in a hotel bedroom, but handy in a restaurant and outdoors in daytime. The guide is something to read when waiting for other people, or for a table in a restaurant, or for your meal to arrive.

Many Albanian words are similar to English. The next challenge is how to pronounce each word, and how to pronounce the letters which have accents. The ling app is good because you start with one word or small groups of two or three words and learn the roounciation by hearing it straight away.

You see lots of English words and brand names.

Same Words

bar

hotel

spa

Similar words

1 agroturizem - agro-tourism

2 grupi - group

3 klient - client

4 ministria - ministry

5 objekt - object

6 recepsion / recepsionit - reception

7 republika - republic

8 restorant - restaurant

9 kafe - coffee (not eating place)

10 ora - time (like hour)

How You Can Help Tourists, Expats, And Families

Travelling is exciting but can be stressful. When you are dealing with travellers, you can offer six things

1 A familiar face

2 Help with language

3 A guide/companion

4 A group

5 Food and drink

6 Novelty - entertainment - art, dance, music

7 Their home food or language

8 Listening to feedback

1 A familiar face

Provide a familiar face. Name their role. Or show their expertise.

Angela acting as the Ah Counter in a Toastmasters International speakers' training meeting.

Many hospitals and organizations show the faces of staff on the wall with their name, job title, and expertise

This has several advantages

The person photographed feels important and recognized

You speed up communication - pairing a person with a problem with the person who can fix it

Somebody waiting can pass the time reading the biographies - probably less stress and fewer complaints

Newcomers and visitors feel familiar with the staff, whether staff walk past or have an appointment

Visitors know the status and expertise of staff.  Visitors don't waste time telling a long story to a receptionist - unless they just want a listening ear. Visitors feel flattered and appreciative if passed to a senior person.

The receptionist should smile at newcomers. Look up and nod when somebody approaches, even if busy speaking to someone else.

If there is a long queue at reception, indicate the length of the wait. Or redirect those with a quick query such as where is the restaurant.

Have signs dealing with familiar queries. Have a building map on reception and by lifts and escalators. I have waited ten minutes at a hospital reception just to ask, which way is Ward 10, or the x ray department, or where can we park.

Have a multi-language translation under glass on reception so a visitor can point to FAQ. For example, where is the toilet, where is the restaurant, I need coffee, I want to book a room, I need a porter for suitcases, I need a luggage trolley, I want to check in, I want to check out, how much is a room, where can we park?

2 Language and Etiquette

Receptionists

A receptionist should if possible speak to the visitor in their own language if that is what they prefer (unless they want to learn the host country's language). Do not speak to somebody in English, then turn to another receptionist and speak in another language. The guest will think that you are being secretive, making rude remarks or giving them a bad room or other bad service.

If anybody complains, thank them for drawing your attention to the problem. Tell them what can be done and how to fix it.

Your magazine or address card could give the letters of the alphabet in Cyrillic (a walking tour in Bulgaria did this). Or a phrase book in your inflight magazine. (I saw this on a package holiday flight on a low cost airline.)

Employees

Language lessons for wives. This is offered by the Japanese. membership of a local club or gym to make new friends.

Etiquette guide for expat arrivals. One of the major oil companies sends relocating employees a handy guide to what to do in a new country. For example, In Holland you are expected to invite all the neighbours to your new home to a housewarming. In the USA the real estate agent (in the UK we say estate agent) sends a welcome pack with a map, list of activities for children, the agency fridge magnet

with a calendar and handy phone numbers of hospitals and utilities, and a pack of discount offers at all the fast food places with their addresses marked on a map. (I guess the local business association gets together to fund this.)

A country club can organize a new members' party. List attendance. Anybody overseas who misses it whilst travelling or busy can be invited to another. If they never get to one, when members for a long time they could be invited as a host of a table to be a ambassador.

3 A guide/companion

Some cities have walking tours. They might rely on tips, so you only pay at the end, whatever amount you like. Or the guide could get a kickback from taking the guest to a factory shop or restaurant, or get a free lunch from the restaurant.

4 A group

You can set up groups on Meetup and Facebook. You can run language groups.

5 Food

Free nibbles at happy hour can attract customers. Show guests the restaurant and restaurant menu when they arrive. If your hotel does not serve breakfast, make several suggestions.

6 I stayed at a small hotel in Cambodia. The host booked me into a dinner-dance show on the evening of my arrival day, arranged a week long tuk-tuk (motorbike with passenger cabin), organized our tickets for trips, recommended shops and supermarkets, made our holiday. He got high ratings on Tripadvisor. He also sent us to restaurants near remote temples where we would never have found anywhere if left on our own. We were very pleased.

7 A hotelier told me that he had trouble attracting the Japanese who were his main customers. When he added Japanese style breakfast to his a la carte menu, and as an automatic item for Japanese groups, the business expanded.

8 Feedback forms are useful. Make sure they leave room for both complaints and praise. Don't just ask wide questions without comments such as 'was the food good - rate 1 to 10'. Maybe the breakfast was wonderful but the dinner was dreadful.

Also allow room at the end for any other comments. If you want to reward staff, make sure they have a large badge, an easy to remember name, introduce themselves. Maybe you can keep one member of staff per room. Or put badges on their clothes showing which languages they speak.

Weddings Worldwide: You can marry on a train in Florida, in a hotel garden or ski slope in America, on a beach in Hawaii, or the Maldives, outdoors in a field in Israel, on a rooftop in Singapore, UK Kew or zoo

American Weddings

Brightline is a privately owned railway  line which has served as a marriage venue for a wedding in 2022.

I have witnessed a wedding (as the official witness) on a cruise ship out of Florida, but this is the first time I have heard of a wedding on a train.

The train wedding couple did not meet on the train. They met when the husband to be was renting property (Americans say leasing) from his bride-to be. They had many dates taking the train and the bride thought the train ride was the most romantic part of the date.

The train company sectioned off part of the train for the ceremony and reception afterwards. Photos were taken on the train and at the station.

UK Weddings & Emergency vehicles

In England I have seen many reports of unusual carriages to the wedding venue, usually connected with the jobs of one of the spouses or their family. A nostalgic horse and carriage is quite common.

I recall a double decker bus being used. Also I recall one case of the bridal party stuck when the road was impassable. Emergency service vehicles (a fire engine) came to the rescue.

Israel Outdoors

I attended a wedding of a relative by marriage in Israel. The incoming security stopped me and asked me the bride's name. The wedding invitation was all in Hebrew and I hadn't a clue. (Her name was Ayala.) We took a taxi from the airport. The taxi driver had trouble locating the venue so we arrived later than expected.

Australia's Public Parks

I have also seen weddings in public parks in Australia. The problem with public parks is that strangers can come along and heckle or  intrude on photos. Not to mention wandering dogs!

I have also seen pictures of ski scenes in weddings, and under-water ceremonies.

Singapore's Rooftop Wedding Receptions

I attended a wedding on a rooftop in Singapore. While we were circling before the wedding we had a chance to take photo of the bride and ourselves against the distant scenery. Once we were seated, because of the high safety wall, we did not see the scenery at all. That was okay. We were more interested in the food and talking to each other. However, at 7 pm in Singapore the sun sets. Later, the view had vanished. Just some lights in the darkness far away. So it's a good thing to arrive early at a scenic destination to get photos. The bride and groom and official photographers might be monopolising the best spots, and, of course, they have priority. So, if you are a guest, arrive early.

Botanical Gardens Bandstand

And another in a restaurant in the Botanical Gardens, after a ceremony planned for the bandstand. The officiant was late.

The bride wanted photos of exchanging vows on the bandstand at sunset. So we rushed to do a mock ceremony.

As a Toastmaster I was able to improvise the mock ceremony. I had a few stage-whisper prompts from those standing alongside.

Afterwards the officiant arrived as the dinner was being served at the allotted time. The real ceremony was performed indoors.

You could get married at Kew Gardens in London. Going north, you could get your wedding photos at Ness Gardens in Liverpool.

You can hire a classic fire engine.

My son got married indoors in London. However, just before the ceremony, the photographer unexpectedly walked us across to a tiny park we had never noticed with feature of rocks and tumbling plants. A look at a map might show you the nearest park to an indoor venue.

Handy Tips For Double Sim Card Phones And Old Phones For Emergencies

Problem
Mr X has transferred his SIM card. He has two phones for two countries and used to keep them separate to be sure of not running up high roaming charges. Some people have two phones, one for work, paid for by the company or a business expense if you are self-employed, and the other phone for social calls. (He has the recent LGX Power - battery lasts about four or five days, "a brilliant phone" - the one available at no extra cost with the two year Singtel contract in Singapore.)

Answer
One of the phones has a space for two SIM cards. It can be used for calls in both countries. You just have to remember which line in which. (As you would when using two phones. Except that with two physical phones you can disable one phone and lock it away in a drawer so neither you nor anybody else uses it forgetting that it will run up bigger bills or not get reception.)

The old phone can still be used as a camera. It can even be used without a SIM card to make emergency calls.

Asking For Freebies

Asking For Items
I never take things from hotels. I wouldn't want to spoil my day with the worry and guilt nor upset the staff with the feeling that somebody had stolen something. They might even get blamed for theft or expected to pay for the missing item.

I ask housekeeping by phone or or room cleaner in the bedroom or corridor if I like something. Sometimes if you want something such as a sewing kit, they bring you one, even if its only for the suites and you are in an ordinary room.

They or you may think they deserve a tip. If you are in America, where the room cleaners are tipped and leave a note with their name, you may feel that any gift deserves an extra tip or that you deserve a gift in exchange for the tip.

If none of this happens, at check out, with my cases packed, I can go to reception holding the item I want, whether it's a pen or pair of towelling slippers or whatever. I can ask them to check with housekeeping whether they throw the items away or wash them or have spares. I can say if they don't mind replacing it from stock but want to make a charge I'd like to know what the price to me would be it is.

Even if two times out of three they say that they need the item, that's ok, you are saved the embarrassment of being caught. The one time they laugh and say, 'Take it!', you can go off happily with your free gift with profuse thanks and smiles all around.
