If you speak English but never learned Spanish you will be agreeably surprised by the number of words which you can translate and remember if you see the English alongside. Any wrapper of food such as Christmas pudding or imported Spanish food will have a translation. The same applies to many websites in Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries.The Spanish and Portuguese are so similar that you are likely to be able to learn and remember both.
The downside is that you might get them muddled. The plus point is that when in the country you will quickly pick up whichever language is local from signs and by listening. Most Portuguese speakers will understand Spanish.
