What To see In Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, Halong Bay - A Special Sight, and The Golden Hotel - Where Everything Is Gold-Plated Or Gold Coloured

Flag of Vietnam.

Vietnam has one of the world's two top exotic, romantic sights, Halong Bay. You can take trips there from major cities such as Hanoi in the north where we stayed.

In Hanoi the major attraction is the small lake. We arrived in the evening and went for dinner in a hotel with a rn open sideed rooftop restaurant overlooking the lake and the bustling streets below. On major holidays the narrow streets shut at either end and are pedestrianised.

You can walk around it in a day or an afternoon. End up at a favourite coffee shop. Or a coffee lounge in a grand hotel.

Museums
We had arrived in rain, so we went to the indoor attractions first. The grim prison museum.

By contrast, we loved the Literature Museum, with its courtyards and statues. You need a while to walkk through courtyeard after courtyard. We did not learn much about literature.

A litle way out of town (a taxi there, a bus back) was the ethnography museum. So many different groups, all with different costumes for adults, weddings, funerals, buildings, textiles.

Next door is the women's museum. With great shops in all the museums.

Clothes To Buy
I loved the Vietnamese dress for women, like an open sided tunic with trousers. It helps if you are tall and thin or small and thin. The white did not look good on me. Black was more slimming.

Our hotel concierge advised postponing our trip to Halong Bay a day or two until it stopped raining so we would get the best weather for photos.

Halong Bay, Vietnam

On board a brand new ship, we boarded with honeymooners, and found the stairs covered in falling rose petals thrown down from the gallery above by welcoming members of staff, all smiling.

(The other number one delightful romantic destination, is Ankor Wat, wat meaning temples, and more nearby temples on the temple trail in Cambodia.)

But what of Vietnam's cities and hotels.

The Vietnamese streets were potholed when I went there and you risked being run over by the ubiquitous motorcycles. those in charge promise to put this right in the next five to ten years. Meanwhile, it's scary. Yet because of Halong Bay I would rate Vietnam as a top destination.

Gold Hotel
Now there's another novelty, this time totally modern in Vietnam's capital, Hanoi. The all is gold Hotel. Gold baths. Gold basins. Gold taps. Gold bed runners. Gold cutlery. Gold bricks around the swimming pool. Gold bricks or tiles on the outside.

Ho Chi Minh City in the south is another major attraction.
