"When you are in London, what do you miss about Singapore?" my favourite friend asked me. I had to give an honest answer. B & K Salt Beef Bar.
What do I miss eating? The salt beef, of course.
What else? Potato latkes. (Like Swiss Rosti and American hash browns - fried grated potato.)
You can see my take away meal from the B & K deli counter. You can also discern, with my hints, the chopped egg and the chicken liver pate.
We have added a salad, because I am on a diet and beef and potatoes can be fattening. I want to lose weight.
Overseas we also miss British salad. Cucumber. Beetroot. Crunchy Cos lettuce.
I also think of the fried fish balls. After that I think of the boiled fish balls.
After the main course you don't have room for dessert. But you make room.
I'm dreaming of lokshen pudding. (If you try to explain that to somebody in the orient, it is a solid noodle pudding made with plump, juicy sultanas and tangy lemon juice. I wonder if it is hidden somewhere in the fridge.
Maybe I shall get a surprise tomorrow. Or next week. Or next month. Or next year. Today I can only dream.
You can visit the two branches of B & K, one in Edgware and one in Hatch End.
