Flag of Ecuador. Number 2 for best journey and number two for penguins.
I was one of the judges submitting suggestions for my top three. Canadian company FlightNetwork canvassed more than 500 travel experts to draw up a shortlist and choose the top 50 journeys.
Fifty top places with fab photos and a quick summary.
Tops are
Starting in the far South of South America:
1 Antarctica - to see penguins.
Antarctica is bigger than Australia.
By cruise ship from Argentina.
Now up to the Equator. The name Ecuador means equator in Spanish.
2 Cruising the Galapagos Islands to see giant turtles and many more animals.
From Ecuador.

Ecuador also has penguins.
Now across the Atlantic to Russia.
3 Trans-Siberian Railway. Russia. Train travel.
I remember doing this as a student with a student group on my way to Japan. I remember more about the inside of Russian trains than what was seen from the windows. We had Russian music blaring from loudspeakers all the way on one stretch, huge choirs. As the tone changed from serious and sad and patriotic to jolly, it was alternatingly fearful and fun.
Back to the American continent and South America.
4 Machu Picchu. Peru. (Trek.)
Impressive. A lost civilization. Perhaps we are more civilised than we think.
5 Pacific Coast Highway. (USA. Drive.)
Going north, the sea is on your left, the cities and villages on your right. From LA to San Francisco, with stopping points such as Hearst's Castle.
6 Icelandic Ring Road. (Drive.)
7 Alaskan cruise. USA.
8 Camino de Santiago. (Meaning the way of Saint John.)
From the French Pyranees to Santiago de Compostelo in Spain. You get a souvenir of your trip, a'passport' collecting stamps from each stop on the way. If you complete the trip you get a certificate at the end.
9 The Greek Islands
Sail to see Syros, Mykonos, and Crete. Mykonos is known for its windmills.
10 Drive the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. From Dubrovnik via Split to Hvar.
The FlightNetwork website has forty more journeys.
Tell me your favourite journeys. I'll have a blogpost on more of their choices and my favourites on Friday.
