UK and British style service
In the UK the knives have the blades facing into the plate. The forks have the tines upwards.
France and French Restaurants
Forks are placed with the tines down. I have heard ti said that this is to show the silver mark. On a wooden table you risk scratching the table. But I am British born and bred.
Indian Restaurants
Indian restaurants wipe the plates before serving.
Some Indian restaurants, especially in Singapore, serve food onto a green piece of banana leaf instead of a white plate.
Dessert in Las Vegas USA. Definitely not British.
