In Singapore it used to be the case that your ID card was taken and returned when you returned the building entry pass. Not any more.
Nowadays instead the security guard takes your name and phone number so you can be called in an emergency (eg evacuation in case of a fire) and the last digits of your ID.
However, the actual card is returned to you.
So, how do they get their card returned?
Sometimes you drop it in a slot to activate the exit.
