A member of my family who is into wine sent me the story of the Herzog winery in Southern California, near Los Angeles, well about 70 km away, apparently, in a place I had never heard of called Oxnard. (With a name like that, it's hard for a tourist board to dream up a slogan.) Like Los Angeles, it is a palm tree place.
The family started over in Europe, where their wine was so popular with the ruler of the day that their founding father was made a baron. After the tragic times of WWII and the arrival of Communism, then they moved to the New World
I looked on the website to see if they do wine tours. Sure enough they do. They have a tasting room and a self-guided wine tour. You can look down on the barrels. Seems like the same local system is used by Kedem and other wineries in the area. You pay for the wine tasting but get the money refunded if you buy a bottle of wine.
But the restaurant is a must. You can read the menu on line on the company's website. (Plenty of pictures of the place on Tripadvisor. Pumpkin and chocolate dessert with a sweet wine to finish. I am drooling already.
(The only trouble is, closed Friday night and Saturday.) However, I can manage with that, so long as I plan in advance.
If you are not bothered about eating and drinking kosher, there are other wineries in the area, so you can do a whole tour.
What else is in the area? A couple of motor museums.
The Kedem company also sells foods such as Matzo (crackers) online. If you are not into wine they have grape juice.
Tripadvisor wants to sell me a flight to Los Angeles. I shall think about it.
