American And British Words You Know

Most British people know that Americans say Fall when the British say autumn. I would instantly recognize the Americanism rest room as meaning toilet. However I had forgotten that bathroom in the USA means a toilet whilst in the UK it means room with a bath.

My own list of favourites includes

US - UK
eraser - rubber
make a right  - turn right
a la mode - with ice cream
ranch house - bungalow, one storey farmhouse

When you are driving or looking for property you might find these:

So, here's the summary:
US
a la mode - with ice cream
a quarter after (eg in 5.15 a time you are expected) - a quarter past
eraser - rubber
fall - autumn
Ranch house - one storey farmhouse or country house
town house (increasingly used in the UK to sound smart) - terraced house
rest room - toilet (WC an abbreviation for water closer is a bit old fashioned)
closet - wardrobe / walk in wardrobe (rare in UK houses, common in the US where larger properties are more common)
