B & K Salt Beef Bar restaurant and take away

B & K in Hatch End, in north west London is the foodie heaven I used to dream about when I lived in Singapore. We went there in November 2025 for lunch with friends.

Starters - or main courses.

Smoked salmon. Add mixed salad.

Our starter choices included chicken soup with noodles and a dumpling. That is a dish found in Poland and several other European countries.

The service was attentive. When we started to share the soup the waitress offered us a second soup bowl without being asked.

Smoked salmon.

Mixed hors d'ouvres.

Latke (grated potato, like hash brown or roste) slightly too well done for me.

End with lokshen pudding (noodle pudding). Or apple strudel.

End with the bill which is sweetened by a foil wrapped chocolate.

The restaurant is Jewish style but not kosher. The place is run by a family of Christians. maybe originally Greeks I believe. We have been going there for years, at least since the year 2000.

At least two generations have been running the original smaller, busy Edgware branch. The slightly more spacious Hatch End branch is sheltered from passing traffic by the slip road where you can park and pay.

Like many restaurants, they don't take American Express.

Which Dessert to Take Away (take out) from B & K Salt Beef Bar? Lokshen pudding! Or chocolate cake?

Lokshen pudding to take home. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

This is what I dream of when I am outside the UK. Lokshen pudding. Made with lokshen (noodles), sultanas (seedless dried grapes from the Greek island of Sultana) and a hint of lemon. I asked for the slice to be cut into three, because it is very filling.

However, the chocolate cake with soft oozing chocolate on top was so good, that I might have that instead, or in addition.

I also had wrapped up the leftover cod goujons.

I wondered what the difference was between salt beef and corned beef. Now I know. Corned beef is minced up. it comes in tins, instead of fresh, so no wonder it is not half as nice as salt beef. Finally, the nasty sounding nitrates, which stop the meat going bad, are what keeps the salt beef nice and red, whilst the corned beef is a horrid grey. (That is the British spelling, not a mistake. Americans use the spelling gray.) Give me salt beef any time. Plus lokshen pudding. And some chocolate cake. From B & K.

A family favourite. When he was single, my son used to go there, to the Hatch End branch, once a week and buy half a dozen sandwiches for lunch each day.

After my mother's funeral, we stopped there for a filling, comforting meal with my widowed father on the way home. That was way back in the year 2000. So we have been patronising their restaurants for more than 23 years. They know us. We know them.

I was so pleased when my beloved son phoned and said, "Are you free tomorrow? We thought we'd eat at B & K. I wish they would open in Mill Hill."

So we recently went back to Hatch End

The parents of the B & K family run the Edgware branch. One of the next generation runs the Hatch End branch. He told us they'd just opened a branch in Potters Bar. They have run out of family members to run it so it's a bit like a franchise. Other people are running it, with food supplied by the B & K family.

What's new on the menu at B & K in Hatch End?

I tried the salt beef sandwich with egg and thin latke. I didn't need the egg. I was already overdosed on calories. We had chips to start to keep the granchild busy whilst waiting.

The latke gets lost inside the big sandwich. Next time I'll  save calories by not having the egg and instead go back to the original salt beef sandwich with a separate, proper, big potato latke.

My two year old grand-daughter cannot yet speak, but she pointed to the chocolate cake and with a lot of pointing and asking and nodding it was clear that was what she wanted. It was very good. With a modest extra payment of one pound for vanilla ice cream we had enough to end the meal for all four of us.

What's kosher, where? Breakfast, brunch, Bagels and kosher food at SoYo restaurant, Golders Green. Compared and contrast with halal

We were looking for a restaurant near Brent Cross Shopping centre for a meeting with friends in the near future. One of the group wanted a kosher restaurant.

What do kosher and halal food have in common? No pork. Why? Because they both follow a rule from the book of Leviticus (Latin for laws) in the bible. Jews refer to the bible. Christians added the New Testament about the life of Jesus, and called the original bible, which Jesus followed, the Old Testament.

Why no Pork?

The rules about eating kosher, not eating pork, were dropped by the ardent follower of Jesus, Paul, when preaching to non-Jews about the messages of Jesus and the Resurrection.

Moslems came along. They followed Mohamad.  (His name is spelled in English various ways, depending on how you translate the Arabic letters into the Roman alphabet. Nowadays you might conform or to be different the different countries with different pronunciations.) The Moslems kept the old, traditional, rule about not eating pork. Some people say the Christianity is Judaism made easy, whilst Islam is Judaism made difficult. (One month of fasting for Ramadan, whereas the Jews have just one day at the Day of Atonement. Christians give up one food for lent. Jews give up all kinds of food for the period including and surrounding the seder.

On the other hand, in some ways Judaism has stricter or more extensive food restrictions. No shellfish. No milk eating at the same meal as when meat is served. This is either the word of God, or a humanitarian rule that you must not kill a milk feeding calf in front of its mother, using the milk to cook the calf. (Calf cooked in milk is a classic and popular dish in Jordan, still, nowadays, in many places in the Middle East, as I discovered to my amazement, on a press trip to Jordan on a Rolls Royce car rally.

This rule accounts for the fact that SoYo restaurant has two branches side by side in Golders Green. One serves meat. The other serves only fish, eggs, and milk based dishes.

How do kosher and halal differ in supermarkets? Both have no pork. The Jewish section has no shellfish. As I am allergic to shellfish, crustaceans and molluscs, this suits me very well.

Where Are Kosher Restaurants?

You will find both kosher and halal food sections in supermarkets all over London but particularly in the East End of London and North west London. For kosher sections in supermarkets, bagels in supermarkets, and Jewish style or kosher food in delicatessens and restaurants you could look at (alphabetically) Edgware, the Finchley Road, Golders Green, Hendon, Stanmore, Temple Fortune.

A relative suggested several places in the area. We vetoed a family favourite, the cafe in the Hendon park by Hendon Central station. Great for a sunny day in the park.

We wanted something more formal, more exciting and filling, with a chance to sit and talk to friends at leisure. But not as luxurious and expensive as a Michelin restaurant, and the upmarket Chinese Kosher restaurants.

B & K

Our favourite for a big meal in an informal setting is B&K, Hatch End, and Edgware, is a salt beef, deli, take away and restaurant.

Bagels in Brick Lane

How about a bagel? London has two famous bagel shops in the East End, in Brick Lane. At least one of them is open very late, possibly all night. Before going anywhere, check the times.

Sabbath and Sunset

Strictly kosher restaurants have to close dusk to dawn on the Jewish sabbath, which in the UK means dark falls early evening on Friday in winter. So the restaurants won't be open Friday evening, in winter.  However, they will be open Saturday.

In summer, the sunset time is different. You can find out by a diary, the newspaper, or your watch, or mobile phone, or computer or kitchen or oven clock (or rather, when you can see three stars).

Bagels - Why The Hole?

I started researching bagels when I turned my family history into a novel (still yet to be printed and published - next job!) I was looking at the lifetime of an ancestor on my father's side who came to the UK from Ukraine, from Lemberg, as it was then called in the 1880s. At that time or earlier Bagels come from Poland, Ukraine which was at different times under different rulers and languages, and Western Europe.

One story goes that bagel sellers would put bread on a stick and make a hole in the middle of the bread to thread bread onto the stick.

Another story is that the hole was for the benefit of the buyer. Why? Going back a few centuries, houses did not have a cooking range or oven, which would have been a fire risk and required fuel. Every house head food buyer or cook went to the baker with their dough.  Or, if travelling, bought ready made food.

Another theory goes that when the householders were shopping, housewives, men if women were not allowed out of the house, workers, or travellers, would buy bread to take home or eat later. The buyer would thread the bread on a string around their neck in order to leave their hands free and keep the bulky bread handy (or hidden?!).

So there you have the story to entertain yourself or tell your friend next time you eat a bagel or kosher food or halal food.

Two options in northwest London.

They have more than one branch. You can book a table by phone.

New East African Restaurant in Hatch End, Bandaa - Plus Indian, Italian, Polish style Jewish style restaurants - Hatch End has it all

Bandaa Restaurant, Hatch End, Pinner, Photo by Angela Lansbury. copyright.

I was told that Bandaa is swahili for hut. That is not what Google translate says, but never mind. Another translation site gives shed/barn and add moteka so you get banda la moteka and you get garage. I now know two words of Swahili. Bandaa for shed (or in combination with another word meaning building) and safari meaning journey.

Restaurants are always exciting, with increasingly exotic names. They come and they go. Hatch End is a hotbed of hot restaurants. In November 2020 all now can open for delivery and take away only. They have signs and banners eagerly asking for your order online business.

If you want to walk along Hatch End, and survey the scene, follow my footsteps. We'll start from the station, Hatch End station, continue on the same side of the road downhill to the shops. You pass the Indian Coriander restaurant.

Across the side road, on the corner there's another Indian restaurant. Social Dhaba, previously Fellini's Italian and in the Fellini building.

Social Dhaba when we ate in, our last chance to eat in, during early November 2020

My favourite at Social Dhaba, Chappati with coconut filling. Photo by Angela Lansbury. copyright.

A few steps further is the crossing. Now you see on your right the vegetarian Indian restaurant, Sakonis.

Look across the road and at night you see the lights of Bandaa. Cross the road  and you come to Bandaa.

Alternative route from the Hatch End station:  When you reach the shops, look for the crossing island, and when it's safe to do so, cross towards B & K.

B & K Salt Beef Bar

My favourite in Hatch End is B & K salt beef. I used to go to their Edgware branch. I used to live in Edgware, not knowing that Anne Frank's father post-war had come to England with his second wife and was also living in suburban Edgware.

For decades after WW2 we just took it for granted that shops and restaurants would be open. This year we customers and the restaurants in every high street in England, and cities worldwide, have new challenges. Covid19 has killed a lot of businesses but it provides new opportunity for businesses and customers with take away food. (Americans say take out.).

Continue along the street and you come to Bandaa.

BANDAA

Looking through the windows or online you can see a decor of elephants' heads.

Their online menu for Bandaa shows starters at seven pounds sterling.

Starters and main dishes include, lots of chicken and lamb dishes, plus potato, sweet potato, rice with coconut - ah, fattening coconut, I love coconut, egg curry, and vegetarian dishes.

On Tripadvisor there are mixed reviews. Some found the food too spicy and others thought it was too bland.  Since half my family like spicy and the other half like bland, we should be able to manage with that.

You can order through the main big three ordering companies. According to the website they open from noon to midnight.

If I remember rightly, a husband from South Africa with a wife from further north have been running variations on Indian food, and African, in Hatch End for years. I used to frequent a cafe. Surely the same people? Like 'Mr Fellini' across the road who retires from one restaurant but makes a comeback later with another name and style (First Fellini, now Pizza Minori).

B and K

Meanwhile, back at home, my family are still finishing off the strudel from B & K. When my late father was fading in hospital, unable to eat, he said he was daydreaming of a nice steak, and a meal of salt beef sandwich from B & K. Hatch End has a steak restaurant, and B & K. When I am travelling overseas, I also dream of B & K.

Our B & K strudel, eaten at home. Not delivered. Collected by us.

That's Hatch End for you. Social Dhaba, across the road from Banaa, say they deliver free within a four mile radius. Yes, that's Hatch End for you. Indian, Italian, Jewish-style (which I discovered in Poland is Polish style with borsht and bagels). And vegetarian Sakoni across the road from Banda. Lebanese food, Latakia, fish and chips. Hatch End has it all.

Back to Bandaa.

Words you might wish to translate

Maembe seems to be mango (from their translation).

Far too many for me to do today.

Best and Biggest Lunch At B and K Salt Beef Bar, Restaurant and Take away In London, England

the mixed hors d'oevre I had on a previous visit. Photo by Angela Lansbury. copyright

.
Salt beef. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Tripadvisor asks if you ate there with family or friends. Both. Four of us, two couples. We had lunch.

One person, in a wheelchair, had already managed to negotiate the doorway when we arrived.

The toilets are at the back on the ground floor. That's good. I hate going up or down a level.

First choice, set meal or not? I chose the two-course set meal. The food is always too much for us. So a shared starter and a shared dessert is good.

Starter
Start with chicken soup. It comes with a dumpling, or kind of ravioli, pasta around meat. Both, I think, costs a little extra. One soup, two spoons. No problem.

With your main course you might have chips or latkes. Latkes, fried grated potato. don't seem to me to be what they used to be. Not such a huge difference in satisfaction between latkes and chips. I was happy with both.

I made the mistake of going for chicken. Because I like chicken. But you can have chicken anywhere.

I should have had the fish balls. They were wonderful. Moist. Tasty. My friend received four, which she planned to share with her husband. Four ended up just the right amount for four people. Next time, for me, it's fish balls.

I think most men would want the filling salt beef. Piled high.

Afterwards we had takeaways to put in the fridge at home. Three sorts of baked lemon cake on a biscuity base. No, the chocolate looks and sound nice but hides the flavour of cheesecake. I prefer plain.

The lemony lokshen pudding and apple strudel and cheesecake lasted me another two days. Just a tiny piece with coffee. For breakfast, elevenses, lunch, tea, and a late night snack. Lovely.

Filling food. Fab food.

You'll find them on Facebook and TripAdvisor and Deliveroo - but not on Mondays when they are closed.

Who Has Birthday Offers? B & K Again - for a birthday! Tesco cake and other supermarkets

Problem
Where can I go for a birthday dinner? Where do I want to go?

Answer
I just want chicken soup. That means B & K.

Nothing fancy. Save that for later when the family are all together and we can justify Prosecco. (I have a birthday voucher from Cafe Rouge which lasts six weeks.)

So we go to B and K.

Salt beef in rye bread. A steak.

We decided to share a lokshen pudding.
It comes up with a candle for my birthday! (Yes, a member of my family told them, when booking the table, and again tonight.) We spent another £1 adding ice cream.

Lokshen pudding with ice cream at B & K. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

An Italian restaurant would have dimmed the lights and sung happy birthday. I had happy birthday sung to me earlier at a Toastmaster International club.

So now I've had a candle on a cake. The real thing - a real candle.

Facebook
I have had lots of wishes from all around the world on Facebook with emojis, little smiley faces and  icons of symbolic 2D candles and balloons. When Facebook first started doing birthday reminders I was rather doubtful how well they would be received. I won't go as far as to say cynical. I'm too nice a person. I will admit to being sceptical.

But it's lovely to hear from people on the other side of the world. The awkward thing is that when I send wishes East, the people the other side of the world are already halfway through their day. If you send a birthday wish at breakfast time in the USA it's already lunchtime in London. Sending wishes at lunchtime means it's already evening. going from the UK to Singapore it's an eight-hour difference.

Time Difference
To be sure your sent greetings arrive in time, you would have to send them today for tomorrow. If you are ahead of most of your family and friends and colleagues, you need to give everybody the 'official' (public and inaccurate) date before your birthday. That way half your goodwill messages arrive on the day earlier and all the belated messages arrived on the day. if your birthday happens to be on Christmas Day or New Year's Eve or a national holiday, you have to decide whether to always celebrate on the actual day, or the weekend before or after, or exactly one week earlier or one week later, to spread out the holidays and celebrations and dinner.

DIY Cake
I bought a DIY cake from Tesco to fit two birthdays this month. It was reduced to £2.50, the price of one piece of cake. Maybe I would have been better off with a piece of cook cake. But I really just wanted the look of a cake.

birthday cake from Tesco to decorate. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

The red tube is the free writing device. I had saved a cake wrapper with the words happy birthday from a previous year.

The cake writing colour is very odd. The decoration on the top of the cake is purply pink, but the writing is in red. Neither a match nor a contrast. More like a clash.

Sponge cake never impresses me. I once had a lovely cake made with Thorntons chocolates on top. If you really care, add your own marzipan, or marzipan chocolates on tope.

If you have a birthday in your family, many restaurants which have several branches and a marketing department are keen for you to join their mailing list and will send you regular offers and one for your birthday month.

Where Can I Get Chicken Soup?

Chicken soup at B and K, Hatch End. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

Problem
Where can I get chicken soup?

Answer
B & K.
Hatch End.

I had the first soup spoon or two, and the end of the ample portion of chicken soup. My cough and cold disappeared.

If you are not near a branch of B & K (four venues in London, England) Morrisons supermarket sells four kinds of chicken soup with assorted additions, at about £1.50 each tub.

You can also make your own.

B & K, Salt beef sandwich, chopped liver and 3 types of cheesecake

A loaf of bread from B & K. You can also buy rye bread, my favourite. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

A salt beef sandwich with rye bread! Photo by Angela Lansbury. All photos copyright.

Problem
What to eat? What to eat first? See those black bits of rye in the bread. Don't you want to crunch the rye.

All day they are open for take away - who is they? B & K salt beef bar.

My son has a carrier bag from B&K. He told me, "One of the staff said he was getting married."

I replied, "Tell them, 'Congratulations!' "

I said to the sandwich. "You will never be short of good food."

My son had gone off to the shoe repairers, he claimed, but came back bearing packages of food. I started checking:
a loaf of bread,
sandwiches,
chopped liver and
cheesecakes!

"What did that cost?"

"Thirty-seven pounds!"

I gasped. "You spent thirty-seven pounds - on take away food!"

"Mum, when I buy food from them, it lasts three days."

"I'm not sure it will, if I'm sharing it."

I looked longingly at the hot salt beef but decided it was more sensible to start with chopped liver. I do like chopped liver. I always think it must be doing me good as well as being cloying and heavy, like pâté, but better than most pâté.
Chopped liver from B and K. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

What can I say? It's good. It may not strike you as superlative as other people say, but like the 'best pizza in America' at our local Pizza shop in Rockville, Maryland, we could not see what was so special. Yet whenever we ordered from anywhere else, we tutted, "It's not half as good as that little place around the corner from us at home!'

Next we were on to the salt beef sandwiches. Very filling. very satisfying. Big. Tasty.

Cheesecake
Finally, pièce de resistance, or in my case very little resistance, cheesecake. I was offered a choice of three:
1 Plain cheesecake. (Which you can see in the centre.)
2 Sticky toffee cheesecake. Or was it butterscotch? Same difference. Sugar. (On the right)
3 Chocolate cheesecake. (Left.)

Three flavours of cheesecake from B & K. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

I wanted to try all three. So I cut a tiny sliver of each.

A taste of three kinds of cheesecake. See how thick the crunch base is. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

No contest. Sorry about this. I like the plain cheesecake. I normally love sticky toffee pudding and chocolate anything. However, the flavour masked the cheesiness of the cheesecake. That was a surprise for me. So it isn't only the texture which makes the all-round experience. It must also be the flavour.

I said, "The vanilla has a tanginess, a sharpness, like sour yogurt. You lose that in the sugar and rival flavours."

My son said, "I don't think it's the cheese, not just the cheese. I think they must add lemon. That's what you are tasting."

So now you know.

The 'small size' liver punnet was big enough for me to take a portion and divide it into half. That half, divided again, was an appetizer for my next two meals. Like cheesecake, a little chopped liver goes a long way.

Lemon flavour lokshen pudding from B & K

What puts a smile on my face? The thought of lemon-flavour, moist lokshen pudding from B & K. I've been to other places where chocolate doesn't taste of chocolate and pastry is dry but if you want filling food and tasty food this is the place.

I was a bit anxious when I read in a local magazine that my favourite B & K got a low rating from the local inspectors. What was the problem? I didn't dare ask what the problem was and if it had been cleared up.

That didn't deter my family. They shrugged and said, "If it was that bad they'd have been closed down and they are still in business." My family climb mountains and race motorbikes and trek through third world countries eating yak butter and stuff from roadside stalls.

So my family happily went back and got a takeaway (admitted a month or so after the reported problem).

Good as ever. Yes I like the chopped liver. And the fried fish balls. And I like the lokshen pudding. Lokshen is noodles, but noodles doesn't have quite the same lip-smacking ring. Lokshen pudding with lemon and sultanas.

I was going to take a photo of it. But it got eaten too fast. I'll have to re-use an old photo.

I need a cheer-up. I must keep a sign on my desk. Think of lokshen pudding.

Who is in the picture in B & K Salt Beef Bar, Hatch End?

You go to B & K for their chicken liver pate, their salt beef, their turkey, or their lokshen pudding (noodle pudding) or apple strudel, or all of the above..

'Who is in that picture?' I asked the owner, who was serving the salt beef at the deli counter.
'My grandfather, who opened the Salt Beef Bar in Selfridges in the 1960s when it was owned by Clore.'
