How do you say hello and goodbye in English?

You would think it would be simple. Hello and goodbye. But what people actually say is much more varied.

Greeting
Hi. (Informal. To friends. Smiling strangers. Not your new boss wearing a business suit. Not unless he is wearing shorts.)
Hello.
Good morning.
Good afternoon.
Good evening. (FFormal greeting from a waiter or restaurant owner as you walk in or sit down.)
Pleased to meet you. (Americanism which has crept into the English language.)

Good night (After ten pm, after dark, when people are leaving an event to go home.)

In Singapore I have been asked the difference between good evening and good night. You would use the word evening earlier and at the start of an event. You would use good night later at the end of an event. You usually go out for the evening and sleep at night.

How about other languages?
Shalom. Hebrew - meaning peace, works for hello and goodbye. I think Arabic Salaam, is the same and both derive from Aramaic which would have been spoken by Jesus. In English Goodbye was originally God be with you.
