Quick And Easy Welsh Words You'll Love To Learn - 24 words

I started reviving my Welsh on Duolingo.

I went back to Spanish. I saw the Spanish word sofa. Easy-peasy. Would there be similar words in Welsh?

In my languages A5 notebook I kept one page of words which were just learned, in alphabetical order. I started a second page on words which were the same or almost the same in English, so I could look at them last thing at night, instead of counting sheep, counting in another language, or before a bus or train journey, to remember the same and similar words and repeat them to myself.

Then I thought, why am I bothering to compile a list of same words? Just find a list in google using AI, or in Wikipedia, and put it in alphabetical order so I can remember it.

Here is my result in Welsh

Welsh - English

bedd - grave (a bed for the dead)

beic - bike

bont/pont - bridge

caer - castle or fort, for example, Caerleon, which is near Cardiff, Caerphilly, 9 miles north of Cardiff, gives its name to Caerphilly cheese, and Caerphilly castle.  Possibly Caerphilly came from Philip's castle, or castle of Philip.

capel - chapel

car - car

castell - castle

coffi - coffee

croes - cross/crossroad

cwm - combe, a steep, narrow valley

Welsh words for bus, train, new - and accents

Welsh dragon.

When I was travelling through Welsh station by train I picked up a view Welsh words by looking at the bilingual signs.

Welsh - English
Abertawe - Swansea
bws - bus
Caer - Chester
Caesnewydd - Cardiff
Cwmni - Wales
lifft- lift
newydd - new
trên  - train (Circumflex accent on the e in tren)
Wreksam - Wrexham
Y Rhyl - Rhyl

Accents
trên I could not find the accents in Google nor in Word. When I was using an Apple computer you held down the key. But now typing on a thinkPad doing that produces a line of the letter e.
I googled the answer found a guide with three suggestions. One said use insert but I cannot find insert in blogger. Another suggestion said hold down alt plus g and r but that did not work and involved too much time and effort.
So I looked up Welsh dictionary and found a university website Welsh dictionary from Wales, typed in train, and copied the Welsh word.
When I find a solution to inserting accents in Word and blogger I shall write it on a sticker and stick it on my laptop.

I have been learning Welsh on Duolingo, which is a website teaching several languages for free - with occasional advertisements.

Learn Welsh words for months

Problem
Welsh words for months are nothing like English words. How do I start to register the words so that I can find a memory aid and remember them.

Answer
First list the words. Then look for similar letters. Find a sentence or an idea that links the Welsh word either to the letters in the English word or the time of year.

I use grammarly which I downloaded to correct spelling and grammar.

Mis means month.
Hydref is fall or autumn. HydreF - Fall/autumn. But Mis Hydref (month of autumn) means October.
You add Mis in front of each month.

English - Welsh
You can spot the months because they have capital letters.
January -
February
March
April
May
June
July
August - Awst (Both words start with A and end with ST. Push the two vowels U together to get W.
September - Mis Medi (Think of the Chinese mid-Autumn festival. Medi.)
October - Mis Hydref - Fall or autumn month.
November - Mis Tachwedd - Turn the w upside down to make M, reverse be to get ed. No as in November, is is not December but touching December, Tachwedd.
December - Mis Rhagfyr (r-hag-fyr - Looks like - the rag of the hag makes a fire in December.

Welsh - English
- January
- February
- March
- April
- May
- June
- July
Mis Awst - August
Mis Medi - September
Mis Hydref - October
Mis Tachwedd - November
Mis Rhagfyr- December

Learn Welsh words: Spider, fly, monkey, goose

Problem
How do I recognize and remember Welsh words? Several start with the same letter. Recognising Welsh is easier. The harder part is reconstructing the rest of the word. Pronunciation is different, learning to recognize the sounds. If you hear a word spoken several times, you might also imagine the spelling on a page.

Answers
Remember amusing sentences.

Welsh - English
copyn - spider (letter p in c o P y n and s P i d e r. The cop spider catches the fly. Cop (spider) yells no.)
p r y f - fly (FlY prYF. Please rush your fly off pffff! End with the f.
monkey - m w n c i
gwydd - goose GwyDD - GOOse

English - Welsh
fly - p r y f
goose - g w y d d
monkey - Mw n c i

Pronunciation
GOOGLE
Go to Google translate:
type in Google translate and up pops translate.google.com
Type in the word in English. Click on Welsh in the other box.
If you are translating from Welsh, click the reversing arrow at the top.
Click on the symbol for sound.
If I am typing in a lot of words and I am in a hurry I just type in the word No in English and up pops dim in Welsh.
After I have used this website several times, it remembers and the Welsh language appears second on the list across the top of the box.

DUOLINGO
If you want to learn Welsh pronunciation, you can find the pronunciation and hints on grammar and learning any language on the first page of Duolingo for that language by signing up for that language.

Snakes and tigers are scary, but you don't often see them in Wales except at a zoo, or in the books on Jungle in a bookshop in Fishguard.

What I find scary is the picture of people standing on a ledge which looks like a see-saw in Snowdonia.
