The Traditional Filipino Men's Shirts

Problem
"Have you been to the Philippines, sir? You are wearing our national dress!" Our Filipino waiter looks very happy.

My husband is wearing a light-weight short-sleeved shirt with what looks like bamboo pattern on both sides of the front. It is worn outside the trousers.

Answer
"Yes, we have been to the Philippines. I can't remember where I bought this shirt. What is distinctive about it?"

"It is a shirt called a barong, which traditionally has a special weave, knitted, rather than woven. The thread is made from pineapple leaves."

"What are the patterns?"

"The favourite patterns are Filipino scenes, such as a mountain."

Well, now we know. You can buy Bermuda shorts, Hawaiian shirts, and Filipino shirts. The Filipino shirt is a bit like the Indian shirt. We didn't say so.
