Where's the petrol tank (gas tank) in a hire car or your car? resister Your car as off the road

Where do I fill up the car?
This puzzled me for years. I would drive into a garage, open the driver's door, and get out and find my petrol tank was the wrong side, the opposite side to the driver.  So I had to get back in and swerve across to the other area.  Or wait.  Or try to back the car, to the annoycance of cars coming in behind me. Or I would stand where I was, trying to get the petrol nozzle to reach around the car.

Tank Indicator On Your Fuel Guage
I was recently alerted to the fact that on your dashboard in the middle of one of the dials, right in front of you, there's a petrol guage. Somewhere within this, is symbol of the petrol (Americans say gas) and an arrow pointing to which side of the car you fill up.

Tank Position
My husband says that years ago, a Jaguar had two tanks, one either side, under the rear wings.
That saved a lot of tought and inconvenience. On the other hand, it wasn not very safe. As safety features were incorporated in later designs, the petrol tanks in cars (Americans say gas tanks) were moved awy from areas of potential impact. Now they are underneath instead of on the sides.

Motorbike Tank Position
My husband, who has driven motorbikes on the road and on circuits, (in his youth! - or rather, later in his second childhood) says ruefully that the same does not appy to motorbikes. On a bike the petrol tank could be over the engine or under the seat. Bikes are smaller, so less petrol.

Anyway, the point of the story is that when you want to find where is the filler point, just look for that handy arrow. Except for emergency services, most people are cuting down on travelling and hiring cars.

Tip - Save Road Tax
If your car is off the road, it might be worthwhile to register your car as off the road, (in the UK, maybe elsewhere) and save on the road tax. If might be less costly to hire a car or taxi for the occasional emergency trip if most of the month your car is off the road.

If you have two or more family cars, or business cars, you might register one off the road and leave the other one taxed in case uiu need it in a hurry, or want neighbours or family, or a repair garage, to have access. On the other hand, to register two or more family cars or business cars or vehicles off the road is an even reater saving.

Re-starting Your Car
While your car is off the road, consider what you might need to do to re-start. Do you want it parked so that it is easy to access the engine to re-charage the battery?
