Fly When? A fortnight's homestay On Arrival in the UK! What about the June wedding, the fully booked flights!

Every night my family and friends in Singapore listen to Boris's announcement in the UK.

Every day in Singapore the Singapore government's Cvid-19 update comes in at noon and midnight.

Of course, we are watching the news from the USA all day.

But the news from the UK is particularly important for a family wedding which was to have taken place in June in the UK.

Boris has made his latest daily pronouncement. The UK is introducing a fortnight's obligatory homestay for those arriving from overseas. (Apart from Northern Ireland and Eire.) Starting from the end of May.

Timing?
One might ask, why not earlier. Why not now? 'They', the powers that be, allow a time lag because people have booked trips specifically for important events such as weddings.

One could go further, and ask, why not weeks ago? Then we might have cancelled the wedding earlier or not booked and paid for the venue and the caterer and the flights.

The Postponed Wedding
Our son's June wedding was already postponed from the previous year because we could not get the venue which was booked up months ahead. So it was booked for this june.

Then it was postponed until September.

Now we have to consider postponing again.

Booking Flights
We should book flights, but we cannot. Flights are not yet offered for that period.

Further factors to consider include what date we have to arrive. Now it must be two weeks earlier than the wedding, with the risk of other lockdowns.

Flight Availability And Prices
Another question is the likelihood that the available flights will be instantly fully booked by those who did not claim their money back but left it with the airline. Or the first flights will be at premium prices.

Internet Weddings
My view is that the couple should get married in a ceremony shared on the internet.

Why Wed?
Why bother to get married? The whole point is to have the official status of recognized marriage, which secures rights as next of kin, inheriting property, children, and so on. If you just need to be legally married, then get the piece of paper and have a religious ceremony, and a party, later.

Yes, the party can come later.

If only running the wedding, and running the world, were up to me. As one wit once said, it's such a pity that the world is so badly-run by politicans when most taxi drivers and hairdressers could do it better.
