As you drive into Nicosia, towards the old city, you see the giant walls. The area was occupied by the Venetians, attempting to defend the area. They were over-run by the Ottomans (Turkish Muslims). Later came the British.
I walked into Nicosia old city, in by one of the gates near the National Museum, but out by another. It wasn't until I looked at Turkish Nicosia in Wikipedia that I realized that two gates are on the Greek side and one is on the Turkish side. So if you enter by the Turkish side and return to the Turkish side, you are using the same gate. If you enter from the Greek side and return from the Greek side, you can only use two of the gates.
Here they are
The northern, Turkish side, the Kyrenia gate. Kyrenia is a city on the Northern coast of Cyprus.
Kyrenia gate, Nicosia, Cyprus. Once a lookout tower, watching for revolt from the Greeks, it is now a tourist office.
