The Civil Service Club's Delightful Decor For Photographs at the Queen Elizabeth Room Restaurant. Best food choices: steak and ale pie and chips, lemon tart or snack cheese

Angela Lansbury in the Queen Elizabeth restaurant at the Civil Service Club, London, England, UK.

The Elizabeth Room restaurant has a picture of Queen Elizabeth. Hard to be photographed next to it because of the reflection of the ceiling lights. The staff helpfully turned off some of the lights, but other lights cannot be changed from the in room switches.

Downstairs you can photograph yourself in the ground floor bar which has interesting paintings on British themes, and an outdoor area with greenery. (If you are in the area and don't have access to the inside, you could photograph yourself outside next to their outdoor plaque, or choose the Sherlock Holmes pub nearby, or Traflagar Square by Charing X station, or the illuminated circle of the London Eye, seen from the approach to Embankment station and roads nearby.)

Who can go there? Members are

modest fees for the year or for life membership.

You might be eligible as a spouse, because another club is under renovations, you work in government overseas. See their website for who is admitted.

You might have to attend with the member who is your friend. (I don't see how that applies if you are in accommodation, unless you are only allowed to book and stay in overnight accommodation as a spouse.)

The Christmas menu for December 2022 is already printed in June. You can see a copy in the reception.

They have a breakfast menu, a light bites menu and a dinner menu.

When I went to a wine and dine club meeting in June, several items on the menu were not available.

Warnings

I recall from previous occasions that i did not like grilled salmon or chicken katso which I thought were dry.

Pleasure and Praise

However, I liked the bread and butter. It came up fast and kept us busy while waiting for latecomers to arrive. We were waiting for them before placing the order.

I was previously keen on the chicken skewers on the light bites menu (as a starter). I looked back at my own reviews on this blog and Tripadvisor and know to order the steak pie which had succulent meat. (The pie topping a bit overcooked and solid), wonderful big chips. Watery cooked vegetables. But the asparagus with my husband's pork and mash was a point, perfect in his opinion.

The cheese platter as a main course on the light bites menu is more expensive than the cheese platter as a dessert on the main menu and includes more ingredients.

Drinks

The drinks menu includes drinks by the glass including Prosecco, rose wine, reds and whites.

Toilets

If you don't like the steep stairs up to the ladies and gents toilets on the second floor by the hire-able dining rooms, you can go down in the lift and use the toilets on the ground floor at the back of the bar.

Portions were large.

The nearest stations are Charing Cross, or Embankment. The Embankment station is marginally nearer, but we enjoy walking from Trafalgar Square. Just before you reach the turning for the club, you pass the Sherlock Holmes pub.
