Hawke's Bay is on the east coast, south of the East Coast (north east, top of the diagonal) of the North Island of New Zealand.
Matawhero is 7 kms west (about a ten minutes drive) of the waterside town of Gisborne. Gisborne is at the north end of Hawke's Bay. Matawhero is the Maori name for mars, and refers to the colour red.
The huge ultra modern building feels a bit like a conderence center. It has a large etnry hall with a large tasting room and glass front cabinets of special wines on the left, far right, a walk past reception and toilets, is the circular area of giant wine containers, two levels of walkway, for the priviledge few to view, escorted.
Out back are open air tables viewing the vines.
Notice the colour of the ground.

You get to the island by taking a ferry which is about a half hour drive to the outskirts or Auckland. Well in advance we booked the ferry out and return and two nights in a hotel over the St Valentine's Day in 2025

We arrived in the car park to see wine tasting from wines srved on top of a barrell. My husband was driving and we wanted to see the food menu.
We were directed to the dining room where beside the bar vines are over the long tables under the open sided canopy shading drinkers and diners from the summer sun - with a view of nearby vineyards. We stood by the bar admiring the exotic and erotic modern costumes worn, as we watched a nearby jolly group of girls surounding a bride-to-be celebrating with a groom or best man or usher.
It was a big, bustling place when we saw it on a lunchtime weekend.
