Building a social media presence on Facebook, Blogger and Linked-In

Firstly, why do you want to build a social media presence? It could be to promote your business, charity, or club, or yourself as a speaker or stand-up comedian or author, or simply as a fun family member and friend.

I find Facebook is the best place for friends. Mine fall into two categories, writers and Toastmasters.

WhatsApp

For friendships in the area, I belong to a WhatsApp group for the road I live in, and a NextDoor post. My husband has declined or reigned from these, because he gets constant chats all day long, from people wanted cleaners and plumbers, and sad posts about lost or injured cats.

One person in our street is very active on Neighbourhood Watch. He liaises with the police and reports back on patrols and crime. He also runs a choir. So when he is prmoting activities of his choir, and wants an audience, and paying audince members, he already has lots of readers and lots of goodwill.

To get paying members, you can use Meetup or Eventbrite.

Using Toastmasters

At Toastmasters meetings, both members and visitor are often asked to introduce themselves, and to give a two minutes speech in the impromptu speaker session. This is your chance to introduce yourself, as, I am an author, footballer, financial adviser. Lots of people are negative, don't want to talk about their work, or say it's not interesting. Yet other people who want help with accounts, legal matters, medicine, even knowing bus routes if you drive a taxi or bus or are in admin for a transport company, will be grateful for and fasinated by simple tips, on ta, health, finance, fitness or sport.

Everything you do makes you an expert. And if you fail, you can make a humorous speech and appeal for help, and start a mutual help group.

When my son was looking for work, he did two things. He struggled to write a CV, and started a CV writing business.

He wanted work, so he started a group for local people seeking work, with a first meeting at which they could compare CVs and help each other, and check newspapers and agencies offering opportunities. I suggested he got free publicity in the local paper about his forthcoming meeting.

The meeting got only six people. However, he applied for a job at a headhunting agency, The head of the small company saw his write up in the local paper, and hired him.

Also a girl who was at the six person meeting took a fancy to him. She enquired after him for many years afterwards.

Readers and Numbers

How do you get the most readers, and relevant readers? Apparently on Linked-In.
