I read in the news today that the French have issued instructions on preparing a survival kit for householders.
Your house should have a bag you can carry or sling in a car. Your handbag or tote bag or holdall should have a few essentials. When hiking I have water, food and sting relief, and insect repallent, and maps and phone numbers. I also put the hospital nubers in my phone.
Everybody should have a survival kit by their door, as well as a first aid box in the bathroom and a burns kit in the kitchen.
Japanese
The Japanese are reputed to keep survival kit by the door. Why? In case of eathquakes.
Travellers should have a first aid kit. And cars.
Medical Help
Many buildings have a defibrilator.
Singapore
In Singapore our most recent condo had a defibrilator by the pool.
In Singapore I noticed some underground stations have signs telling you that the are is shelter.
Escape Keys
A metal outside gate is often locked when the occupants are away. However, it can be a barrier to escape in a fire.
I read about a fire in a flat in Singapore. A rescuerwho was a neighbour or family member nearby was passed a key by the people inside. The metal door was so hot that he burned his hands oening it to get them out. What are the lessons learned? Maybe a heatproof glove, an oven glove, by a metal door or window.
Escape Ladders
You can buy roll up escape ladders to take with you when travelling.
Europe
In Europe many buildings have cellars for safety.
UK
The owner of a large estate told me that his building had an escape tunnel, and that every grand mansion in Britain would be built with an escape tunnel.
During the religious wars in the UK, large houses had a secret room for hiding a priest.
Hotels
Escape routes are marked on the back of hotel doors. The first thing I do in a hotel is check the route to the fire escape, and walk it.
I also check if the windows can open, and if I could get out onto a balcony or ledge.
Condos
When renting as a holidaymaker or expat, check that the key to the patio door or back door is near the back door, not in a box bby the front door. The back door or window key could be kept by the keyhole or in it, but not visible to an intrider or burglar outside.
Planes
On a plane it is handy to have some spare food in case your take off is delayed.Or you are stuck on the tarmac of a foreign airport in a jijack.
Wikipedia has article which include useful information on kits used in various situations such as Lifeboats and astronauts.
Working - Get Me Home Kit
The other one I had not thought about previously was a get me home kit, to get home when there is no public transport or roads are blocked by trees or floods. This includes walking shoes and printed maps, in case electronic devices have no connections.
Hiking
Hikers are also advised to take paper maps, since wifi might not be avialbe in mountind as well as battery running low. A first aid kit needs to be waterproof.
In addition to the military, and means of transport and hotels, useful information comes from the boy scouts.
Items you probably already have include a multi-purpose or Swiss Army knife.
Holidays
We pack for holidays a picnic kit with food containers which seal.
Drivers
Some drivers have an eergency toilet kit, inc ase they are stuck in a traffic jam or elsewhere for a long time.
