Toilets In Starbucks & Coffee Bars

If people are using Starbucks for rest rooms (in the UK we say toilets), are there public rest rooms nearby? If so, put a sign on the door saying,

If you just want a rest room, go to (such and such a place).

If there are no public rest rooms within half a mile, the local street or area business owners, or council, should be providing some.

Where else can people go?

Costa.

McDonalds.

Pubs

Shopping malls

Restaurants

Not the dress cose. The toilet code.

McDonalds Toilets - Need A code

If you need a toilet, the Brixton toilet has none. Yes, the tube station has none.

The nearest is a restaurant. McDonalds nearby has toilets upstairs. Be warned, if you want to use the toilets before ordering, or ithout orfering, you go upstairs then find you have to go downstairs to order. And don't throw away the receipt! The sign outside saays that the number is on your receipt.

Get Milk & More Deliveries in the UK - and More Worldwide, not just Amazon and McDonalds

Milk from a UK supermarket. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Remember when we used to get a pint of milk on the doorstep every day. This was when we were children and most people had one or two children and most children had two parents, so most households were three or more.

Milk deliveries stopped. Later supermarkets would offer a complete shop, once a week. After Covid, everybody has got used to being able to have anything delivered. Amazon delivers. McDonalds delivers. Everyone delivers. In Singapore there is Ubereats. Supermarkets such as Waitrose will deliver. Ocado delivers. Tesco delivers..

In London the restaurants have tables by the door for collections by people zooming around on motorbikes.

Milk & More

This week in the UK my family received a leaflet with an offer from Milk & more with 30% off the first four orders.

It doesn't suit me right now. We all live within walking distance of the shops. That's one of the things I always look for when buying or renting property. The same applies when staying in hotels, unless we are also renting a car.

The post office is now offering to collect post as well as delivering.

Look for bargains worldwide, especially on Singapore trains and buses

Bargain advertisements are all around. When you go to a foreign city, at the airport, hotel, restaurant or bus, as soon as I see a free newspaper or magazine I pick it up. When I first started doing this I would lighten my load of paper by tearing out and throwing out the advertisements.

I saved the article to hear about local sights I should see, the history of historic buildings I should see, grisly murders in dangerous areas I should avoid .- and if I had to wait at a station I had reading matter and information to share.

Save Or Throw Away?
Later, it was often the other way round. I would jettison the articles about luxury shops I could not afford to visit, local minor celebrities I would never meet. I kept the advertisements for two for one offers on entry to public buildings, transport passes, one off exhibitions and nearby restaurants offering a free glass of wine.

This is what I do nowadays, even when coming into my home cities (London and Singapore). I keep up to date with new attractions and offers for my overseas family and friends and to tell tourists on the train into town.

Magazines
Airports are not the only places with offers. In the UK in London and in many cities you will find local language magazines. Often a restaurant takes a magazine which features that restaurant and others nearby.

Postcard Ads
On one occasion in Asia, in Vietnam, in Siem Reap, on the way out of a restaurant, I picked up advertising postcards which offered a free drink. We had already paid our bill, and ordered a different cocktail to the one offered. However, we had booked again for the following week, and were able to use the offer. I kep it in my handbag all week, so that I did not delay lookinfg for it, nor forget it on the next occasion.

I picked it up from a huge pile of identical postcards. My family said, "No need to take it. They will still be there when we come back."

When we returned the postcards were all gone. I didn't know whether they had been grabbed up by visitors in the busy Christmas and New Year week, or whether the management decided they no longer needed to lure in customers because they were now, briefly, full.

Negotiating
It didn't matter. The important thing was that I had the offer. Would they honour it? The waiter hesitated. My husband pointed out that we were now regulars, and the free drink offer had brought us back. Yes, they gave us the free cocktail. The important thing is to mention the offer when booking and when asking for a table. The restaurant does not want to think they have made a certain amount of money and get a nasty surprise at the end. You don't want to sit worrying whether they will honour your offer, nor to have to hunt for it when your taxi has arrived to take you home.

Much better to be sure at the start. The waiter can bring your free drink, present it saying your free drink. You smile at him. He smiles back confident that you will like him or her and the service and probably leave a tip.

Singapore Flag

In Singapore sometimes the trains and buses have ads hanging from the overhead rail which supports the straps you hold when standing.

On my last journey, I didn't see any ads hanging. Often I am too busy looking at my map or phone and counting bus stops and looking at landmarks to check when I will reach my destination.

If I am with a friend, or talking to a new acquaintance, I am too busy to look around and grab materials which i fear makes me look like an impecunious freeloader or hoarder. However, on this occasion, I saw an ad which had fallen to the floor and I picked it up.

Cleanliness and Washing
Regarding picking things up off the floor or the ground, I am in two minds about this. I want the item. But I don't want to get my hands dirty, nor carry dirty items in my bag nor in my pocket.

If I pick up something which is washable, at the next train station or bus interchange (almost always beside a train station) I find a toilet and wash both my hands and the item I have picked up.

Singapore train stations always have toilets near the entrance.

Some laminated items can be wiped or washed. If not, I can take a photo with my phone, then throw the paper in a bin and wash my hands.

Some of the items are time sensitive. They may even already be out of date. Sometimes the offer has expired but the information is useful because it alerts you to a nearby location of an interesting restaurant or handy fast food place.

My latest find is from McDonalds.

How The Haze Affects Your Health, Finances and Travels

Where is the haze and when and why?
My family has been experiencing haze in Singapore. I have cancelled my daily swim and I will tell you my other expeiences in a moment. But you will be wondering which countries are affected and how this affects your business and holiday plans.

Haze in KL, Malaysia.

Haze over the Merlion, symbol of Singapore. Picture from Wikipedia article on haze.

This is a neat summary by Wikipedia.
The 2019 Southeast Asian haze is an ongoing trans-national air pollution crisis which affects several countries in Southeast Asia, including BruneiIndonesiaMalaysiaPhilippinesSingapore and Thailand.
Thailand began to experience haze in February 2019 until mid May 2019, peaking in March and April. Later in the year, starting from June-July 2019, Indonesia began to experience haze. Malaysia was affected from August 2019, while Singapore and Brunei experienced haze in September 2019.
It is the latest occurrence of the Southeast Asian haze, a long-term issue that occurs in varying intensity during every dry season in the region. It has mainly been caused by forest fires resulting from illegal slash-and-burn practices, principally on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan,

Flag of China
Yellow Dust, China and Korea
Yellow dust has also affected Beijing in China, and Korea, but that's another problem, an extra problem. Meanwhile, in Asia we have haze.Who cares if you are not in Asia? Well, there are lessons to learn for the USA and Europe, your overseas colleagues could be affected, and your investments may be affected.

Haze All Over Asia
The haze is bad for business. It doesn't just affect the children, the elderly, the pregnant, the nervous.

Flag of Singapore

Flights
First, the haze can affect flights. You can't land a plane if you cannot see. You cannot fly across the city.

Flag of  the USA

As I discovered on the day of 9/11, if the flights in one part of the world are affected, there's a knock on effect in other parts of the world. Planes are turned back or don't set off. People miss their connections and half empty flight are cancelled. The plane from one continent does not arrive so the ongoing section is also affected. A delay in take off means the pilots and crew are over their permitted time and the plane has to wait for another crew to bbe assembled.

Road Transport
Increase in road accidents. Cars run into each other. Poeple try to tailgate and hit the car in front which slows or stops when visibility ceases, causing accidents.

Your air crew may be in airport hotels, and so may the passengers. But if some of them are in the city and cannot get to the plane that causes problems.

Different countries have different solutions. Take India, for example.

Flag of India

Indian Car Pollution Solution
Cars in cause pollution. So oen measure has been to allow cars to operate on alternating days according to the numberplate, odd numbers one day, even numbers the next.

Car Sharing
So if you and your enighbour have cars which fall into different categories, on odd number days you share one car, on even number days, you share the other. This works if you don't have more than half the seats filled by one family.

Pedestrians and Cyclists
I am planning a trip to a company in Singapore. That involves a walk from the station. But we are told not to go outdoors. Sports are cancelled. Construction workers are recalled. The security on the gate.

Zoos
The staff in the Safari park. The animals in the zoo are inside.

Symptoms
What are the symptoms of the haze? I keep clearing my throat, as if I have a sore throat or bad cold starting. My eyes look bloodshot.  I keep coughing.
My eyes feel prickly.

Business Meetings
So, I don't want to walk to my business meeting. What are the alternatives? I could take a bus. But that involves sitting out in the open air waiting for the bus if the bus is not frequent.

Offering Lifts
I might get a lift back to the station. I might not.

Taxis And Costs
What about the cost of the taxi? There and back. Twice a day for a week, or more. 28 trips averaging 10 dollars. What if the other person cancels? Waiting for the taxi at the pick-up point exposes me to the air.

Schools Closed
Schools are closed. That means parents have to stay home to look after their children. Shops and services and businesses are closed.

Sports
The swimming pool lessons are cancelled. The golf tournaments.

Swimming pool in Singapore.

Restaurants
Restaurants with outdoor seating are losing half their business.

Waiting For Your Driver
I could call a grab or taxi. Both ways if I do not get a lift home. The person kindly offering me a lift wants me to wait at the pick up point outside the station. But that involved standing by traffic fumes and breathing in the haze. I have to arrive early to be sure not to miss the driver.

Motorcycling
Motorcyclists are affected. You could cancel your outing and your trip to the outdoor restaurant. Order food delivered. But the Domonis pizzza and McDonalds delveries and Deliveroo might cancel delivered to protect the health of their drivers.

Social Engagements Cancelled
My Singaporean friend Shan (ethnic Chinese, speaking Mandarin friend who married a men from Australasia, has a second home in Australia. She decided to fly back to Australia last time there was a haze. So her lunch with me was cancelled. I started to feel like the last rat on a sinking ship.

Buying Property
Singaporeans keep telling me to sell my home in the UK and buy in Singapore. If I sell up in the UK I have nowhere to go back to. I am having second thoughts. Will I really want to reture to Asia and the haze when the haze is bad for the elderly?

Wind Direction
The wind blows away the haze. Relief. Then the wind changes.

Where Is the Fire?
Fires are in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Flag of Malaysia

Talks are taking place about fines or punishments for those who are residents of one country, running businesses in another. Instead of waiting for Indonesia to fine the subsidiary company in in Indonesia, fining the main company in Malaysia or Singapore, and vice versa. If it costs only 40 dollars (per foot, per acre or whatever.  to clear land by fire, but to clear by other conventional means costs 400, a business is tempted to take the cost effective route. If the government fines so that the balance is changed, or puts poeple in prison, or takes other measures, that might affect the matter.

Who is paying for the preventive measures? It costs money to send out planes, drop water, deploy the army. Add the cost to the emergency services, sending the firefighters, compensating firefighters who lost their lives, ambulances, hospital staff.

Farmers have lost lives trying to protect their crops and cattle.

Shutting Windows
In Singapore we are looking at windows. The open air scullery areas. The maids walking the dog and cleaning the car in the open sided car parks.

Wearing Masks
The number of people wearing masks is increasing. The people across from you on the train are wearing masks.

Masks

Buying Masks
You can buy masks from pharmacies but when there's a spike in the haze the masks run out. Some masks are only effective a few hours.

Masks are unfomfortable to wear.

Before buying a mask check the different kinds. Dust marks are not the same as haze masks.

Tourism Affected
Do you enjoy tourism when there's a haze. Even if you were not worried about your health, the safari park is shut. The walk to the Gardens By The Bay from the MRT means you might take a taxi instead. The cheaper hawker centre, the outdoor food court, will be deserted and closed.

Coffee Shops and Fast Food
The outdoor areas of McDonalds and Starbucks are empty.

Photographs
The picture of the Taj Mahal or another pretty building, the mosque in Malaysia, all shrouded in mist, or against a white sky instead of blue. The 'ordinary' buildings, the skyscrapers, are against a white sky.

Windows and Fans
I wake to feel groggy. The air is stifling. What is wrong. The patio doors to the balcony have only a little gap for air. I close them. The bathroom air is bad. The high window by the shower is adjar, always. I must clea a path to all doors and windows to clear them in a hurry. We used to leave open the doors and windows to create a through breeze and save the cost of air conditioning.

What I Cancel
If a meeting is held in the outdoor void deck of a Community Center, I won't stay. If the get together after the meeting is at an outdoor hawker center (food court) I won't go.

Tip
Look for free masks given away free at hospitals and clinics.

Chua Chu Kang Community Club For Green Walls and fish and tortoises

When I reached my destination and the 190 bus dropped me right outside the Community Club. I was already in a good mood.

CCK CC with flowers and oriental stone lantern.

Food Choices
If you arrive early for a meeting, you can go to the hawker centre (outdoor food court) beyond on the left of the building. Alternatively, use the McDonalds just inside the front on the left.
CCK Greenery. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Notice the flower pots at the base and the letters CCK at the top.

Greenery
This building has two striking features.
1 The low Chinese garden with colourful flowers and a small stone lantern.
2 The triple giant facades with greenery growing all over them.

Fish Pond
Like many Community Clubs, this one has a fish pond on the ground floor. I enjoyed watching the large pink and yellow and black fish shoot round and round.

CCK CC in Singapore. Photo by Angela Lansbury.

Three tortoises sat so still on a tiny raised platform in the centre of the pond that I though they were a stone statue for decoration. Then one of them moved.

Getting there
The bus stop for the 190 bus from Bukit Panjang MRT and shopping malls is right outside. For the return bus, cross the road to the bus stop slightly to the left. you might think it's obvious to cross the road for the stop going in the opposite direction, but some Community Clubs are on a bus loop, so you can arrive and leave at the same stop.

Toilets
As is often the case in Singapore, the toilet paper is in a dispenser outside the cubicles.

Harrow On The Hill Station Is Being Redeveloped - how to see the exhibition, church, and give your views

Catch the Metropolitan line from Baker Street, my dear Sherlock, and you will be on your way to Harrow, and the famous Harrow school at the top of the hill.
Harrow School. Walk uphill or take a bus. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

The station is at the bottom of the hill in the busy shopping area, with two indoor shopping malls linked to the pedestrian precinct.

Until recently, the big complaint was that we travellers had no step-free access to the station. Really annoying, especially as the adjacent bus station has the buses to Northwick Park hospital which you might visit if you are ill or injured, or you are visiting an elderly person and yourself not so keen on stairs. As for people with luggage, suitcases on wheel, shopping trolleys, mothers with kids asleep in buggies the station needs stairs!

Now for the good news.

Harrow on the Hill station is being redeveloped. The plans are being exhibited at the Baptist Church from the 13th to the 16th Feb 2019.

Baptist Church
The Baptist Church itself is a hidden gem. The entrance is set back, turn right from the station when facing the shopping mall. Walk almost to the end of the road (College Road), just before the turning right into Station Road which features Debenhams on the left and McDonalds on the right.

If you don't manage to make it, you can email them. I sent them several suggestions of ideas I had seen in Singapore at stations and Community Clubs.

The email they sent me about the exhibition said that if you could not go email then, and I could not see the email. However, when I acted like Sherlock and followed the website link I found the click through to an email contact.

The new development will include housing and eating places.

Where You Can Eat,Drink, Shop and Park Free In Harrow

At the top of the hill are some fine restaurants, a pub, but narrow and steep streets, and competition for parking places. Down in the town you have the multi-storey St George's car park.

In Harrow on the Hill town centre you have a big choice of places to grab a quick bit or have a quick chat before or after a meeting. We were looking for somewhere to go after a Toastmasters meeting at the Baptist Church in College Road.

At least three, the one by St George's car park, the Irish pub, a Wetherspoons.

Gyms and Sports

Harrow Baptist Church has a sports hall beside the kitchen at the back.
Another gym in the shopping centre.

Debenhams
I have not been there recently but last night somebody told me the Debenhams car park is open plan and open all night.

St George's
Updated car park, now reduces the paper. Instead of a ticket as you enter and another as you leave, the one you receive on entering is scanned when you pay.

But when issued, how does it act as a receipt?

If you are on business and claiming expenses or tax, you might want to photograph the ticket and the charges for your own records.

On the current UK tax system, I believe you cannot claim your journey to and from work but you can claim expenses for trips made for work whilst at work.

Free Parking
In St George's after 6 pm parking is free.

How Late?
The St George's car park is open until 3 pm.
I was told that Debenhams is open all the time.

Why would you need overnight? Lost car keys. Too drunk to drive. Stayed overnight at your friend's because it was too late and dark to travel.

On shift work.

Harrow's Hidden Church

I must have walked past the church many times and not noticed it. The Baptist church in Harrow. It is just around the corner from McDonalds, a few yards from Harrow on the Hill station. Just near the statue of Lucy with her skipping rope.

In January two groups held meetings there. Harrovian Toastmasters International speakers club, and the Liberal MP group.

Harrovians speakers met in the sanctuary, which contains a sunken baptismal area, a bit like Jewish mikvah or ritual bath, like a Jacuzzi, but square, and deeper, with steps down. Total immersion.

If you wish to attend a meeting such as the Sunday church service, Harrovian Toastmasters, or another event such as a political or local group meeting, the address is below.

If you walk from St George's car park through St George's indoor mall into the pedestrian open air area of shops, you pass Primark and several shops selling food and clothes and Santander and Poundland. When you emerge into Station Road, with Debenhams on your left, instead turn right towards McDonalds. The next turning containing the station is not station road but is called College Road, presumably because it once led towards a college or Harrow School. The church entrance is only two along but set back behind a metal gate and railings, a modern vertical wall but clearly marked as a church.

McDonalds eggy chips offer - only with meals - my experience

Advertisement at Holland Village, Singapore. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.

I saw the advertisement in Holland Village by a bus stop. Later I visited the Chong Pang Community centre, which has a branch of McDonalds adjoining it, open 24 hours.

However, I was in a hurry. Later in the day I was at Tampines West Community Centre which contains a McDonalds inside towards the back. You can see it from the entrance. I had arrived early for the meeting. Still time.

I wanted to try out the eggy chips at McDonalds. I lined up.

However, when I tried to order the one dollar twenty price listed went up to five dollars something or nearly six dollars something. I had to order a meal in order to have the chips as an extra at the advertised price.

I had just eaten a large tea and was expecting a bun with savoury filling at half time of my meeting.

I asked if a meal plus chips came to the same price as chips alone. No point in paying the price of a meal and chips and not claiming the meal. She went through the options and prices and I could not follow the answer.

It seemed that I would have to pay a dollar or two more to have the meal and chips. I did not want pay for a full meal. I was getting fed at my meeting.

How about eating the chips, but taking home the meal to eat the following day, or as a midnight snack?

I was not sure that the meal would be fresh enough to take home if I ordered it at 7 and got it home by midnight. Better to order it at ten when the meeting ended. But I suspected that everybody would be rushing to the MRT (train station). So I gave up.

During the evening it occured to me with hindsight, that with foresight and chutzpah, I could have asked somebody else in the queue to order an extra portion of chips with the meal, and I could have given them the money in advance.

I might have had to try two or three people. It would have taken some time.

However, meanwhile my meeting was starting. At the end of the meeting, I had a companion to carry my heavy bag. They were in a hurry to get home. A group of four of us. I could not delay them.

Somebody said the eggs on chips was not good. That's one person's opinion. I may think differently. I still want to try them. Another time.

Looks like Florida, say my family.

You can tell it is Singapore because of the combination of the palm trees, the imposing Community Club building with the clock tower, and the orange Chinese lanterns for Chinese New Year.

I love the tower. So distinctive.
the building contains a Starbucks and a McDonalds. At the back is a busy outdoor children's playground. Something for all the family.

Singapore is a great stopover between Russia or Europe and Australia.

Salted egg yolk at McDonalds

This ad appeared next to me as I waited at a bus stop in Singapore. A series of McDonalds pictures appeared. Each country has its own seasonal specialities adapted to local tastes. try them whilst you can, because you can't be sure they will be available next year, next month, next week or even tomorrow. I loved the durian shakes, but they kept running out and a month later they were not available.

Salted egg is popular in Singapore. It appears as the centre of the more expensive mooncakes, for the autumn harvest festival at full moon time. Mooncakes are generally sweet. the salted egg enables you to eat more of the sweet stuff and get some protein, and a contrast in tastes.

If you are a Singaporean going to England, like the USA and the rest of the world, the UK has many branches of McDonalds. Also look for the British lunchtime snack, Scotch Egg, a boiled egg encased in sausaged meat.

Where To Find 24 hour McDonalds

Singapore has several 24 hour McDonalds brnaches. This one is a McCafe. At Springleaf Tower. My motorcycling friend says the Springleaf district is around Upper Thomson Road.

Another 24 hour McDonalds is at Toa Payoh near the library, on a corner. Also near the church, and the police station in the Community Club. Near Toa Payoh MRT station.

Eating On The Move And Providing Food For Club Visitors

I went to a lunch time Toastmasters Meeting at a Financial group in the downtown area. They provided a choice of meats or fish or vegetarian food with a rice pack and vegetables, different for each person. We all chose from a choice of five or six meals. I had chicken, rice, mushrooms and a green vegetable.

Most lunch time meetings I have been to feature heavily on pizzas with vegetarian pizzas.

The evening meetings vary. Some places provide a proper meal, with noodles and meats. Some even have a casserole or two, often sponsored by a member who is in business. Some clubs provide bananas and grapes.

One club as a matter of principle has only 'healthy' food, fruit and nuts, hardly any biscuits and cakes. Bukit Timah Toastmasters.

Singapore is a country with a high rate of diabetes. I am not surprised.  Cakes, biscuits and sweets.

Student groups, supposedly those who are educated, were the worst, all chocolates and biscuits. It's not as if they can't get proper savoury food. Every Community Club has a McDonalds or even an entire food court underneath.

Admittedly, there's a huge amount on the internet condemning processed food. However, even fried chicken seems healthier to me that endless sticky buns and jelly-like sweets and pandan cake.

If you are catering, please provide some fresh fruit, and something which is not all fat, cereal and sugar.

I went to a club last Christmas for a so-called Xmas party. They had lots of Xmas songs and Xmas costumes and Xmas theme speeches. But the breaktime was just tea and coffee and packets of dry biscuits. I and another visitor muttered to each other and rolled our eyes. She was more forthright than I was. I have never been back.

Bananas are cheap and filling.

Eat Out At National University Hospital

Problem
After a day in A and E, I went back to the ENT department for some checkups, as well as an X-ray. You are in the hospital during lunch hour. Where do you eat?

Hospital Location
National University Hospital is very convenient. It is right next to Kent Ridge MRT station.
The skyscraper building has a food court where the staff and the patients can eat, just like any other shopping mall.

Food Break
Your choice of food is varied. When I was there stalls were offering all kinds of chicken and meat and egg dishes, seafood, Chinese and Asian food, Japanese food, Indian and Malay food, Halal food, vegetarian food, a fruit and fruit juice stall, plus tea and coffee.

Choice Of Food
As usual, my husband and I differed completely on our views of the food. He had shellfish. I'm allergic to it. I had a durian dessert. He won't go near anything durian. (I kept the contents secret until I had finished.

My first thought was to go for my favourite, chicken rice, but I eat that a lot at home, so I opted for a novelty. I wanted masala dosai. However the dosai was unavailable.  Instead I had another Indian bread pancake, with two side dishes, one of which was chickpeas.

I could not try my husband's shellfish.

However, he was happy to try the Indian bread and chickpeas. he said it was good. I thought the bread was dry and so-so.

Durian Dessert
The durian was in generous amounts, but bland. It may not be the right time of year, because the McDonalds McFlurry durian promotion has just ended (October). I must say the McDonald durian was better.
This is all I got in A and E. A bread and jam sandwich and water.

What was good about the place?

Seats and Tables
Seats with backs. Very big and busy yet still no trouble getting a table.

Menus And Healthy Options
The menus showing dishes were marked with coloured ticks showing the healthiest and least healthy options.

Toilets
What was best of all? The toilets have built-in bidets. Turn a knob on the side, and you get a wash. That is much better than the old fashioned hose which sends water all over the floor and seat.

All in all, very good because it kept my escort happy.

More Durian McFlurry At Anchorvale Community Club In An Inspiring Building With A Swimming Pool Please Copy

Problem
Where was I going to find my next Durian McFlurry?

Answer
In the new Anchorvale Community Club near Changi Airport.  Our driver was busy parking and a friend and I were waiting in the large void deck. I ran over to take a picture of the super swimming pool which had coloured slides. My friend told me, "All the new Community Clubs in Singapore have swimming pools."

I am so pleased. Private condos have had swimming pools for years for expats and the better paid. The HDB flats which house the majority don't have swimming pools. the residents are expected to use the public swimming pools, most of which have simply oblong conventional swimming pools. As the newly-built condos have added water slides, curves and water features, so the public pools have now caught up.

Not only does this provide families with entertainment and exercise, it makes the community clubs more of an attraction, which provides more cohesiveness in the community, and makes the community club more profitable, so that other activities such as small meetings for minorities in meeting rooms can be subsidised by the paid for swimming pool.

The Anchorvale Community Club was a great success, if you were to judge by numbers of people. Parking places were in short supply. The McDonalds was thriving and had a busy indoor seating area and a quick-service window in the main hall.

At the quick window I saw a sign for a card to sign up for. I decided I should do this, as it was my second day running visiting a McDonalds. Their choice of foods is much greater than in the old days: fish, vegetarian - and durian (fruit) ice cream.

Unfortunately, downloading the app was a problem. I never made it.

However, I can tell you that the swimming pool in Anchorvale looks great. If you are anywhere else in the world (such as Asia, the UK now that global warming will be making longer summers) and the southern area of the USA, look at the Singaporean Community Centres which are built in every government housing estate, a model for the world to copy.

Please Copy Community Centres
The community centres provide central parks watched by the surrounding buildings. Ground floor shops and doctors and dentists and pre-school so the elderly and pregnant women and young mothers and fathers don't need to travel with low budgets and toddlers. Schemes offer housing swaps so that the elderly on high floors oe people with inclined to climb children can swap with those on ground or lower floors (who get kudos and/or awards, or rewards).

Community Housing
The housing estates, built and maintained by the governments Housing Development Board (HDB) to provide affordable housing for all citizens.  Basic upgrades such as repainting outside walls and repairing paths and installing covered walkways to keep off the sunshine and rain are funded by the government.

Upgrades To Housing
Extras such as designing and installing gardens, gazebos, fountains and fish pools and sculpture and arches and more shops are chosen and half-funded by residents. Their ideas and imput of money means that they feel responsible for keeping the new facilities in good condition.

Anchorvale Community Centre is already up and running successfully. Next year we anticipate that the new MRT (mass transit) underground railway station will be completed.

Is it McDonalds or MacDonalds?

McDonalds McFlurry. Photo by Angela Lansbury. copyright.

Problem
The confusion occurs because there's a big Mac.

Answer
It's actually McDonalds. Saves you time when typing, only one a. The clue should be in the word McFlurry. You can say Mc-something or other. But mc on its own is hard to say. A big mc doesn't work. So they decided on Big Mac.

Oops! It's easy to make a mistake. In my title I had MadDonalds! Doesn't typing and spell-checking drive you mad. Enough to make you want to eat a McDonalds.

Do you travel to escape or return? How to enjoy the old and new on holiday

"It is better to travel than to arrive."
Robert Louis Stevenson.
Problem
Old Versus New
I once asked a friend, "Why do you travel to see new countries, places and people?"

She replied, "To find out what different countries, places and people have in common."

I was surprised. I had always thought the purpose of travel was to find new places, new kinds of people, new foods, new ways of dealing with old problems.

For example, here's a way of ordering a hamburger in the USA.

Escapism?
Whether you go to the same country every year, or always somewhere new, also reflects what you want out of travel. Is it escapism, to get away from stress? A holiday is as good as a rest.

Back to Nature and Roots
Or is it to recover, go back to nature, find your roots. If you wish to re-live memories, and you leave it to long, you may be disappointed because everything has changed.

Australian Emigrant Returns
I am thinking of an Australian who had emigrated. He longed for years to return to London. However, when he came back it was not the same London as the one he had left. He was now tuned into Australia, because that was more familiar.

Homesickness Versus Being Sick of Home
Homesickness, is another example of this. You go to a new place and everything is unfamiliar. You don't like the food, the place, the people. As soon as you see familiar food and drink, you feel better. Some people from the UK want fish and chips for lunch. They want 'a nice cup of tea'.  Others want McDonald's. Even those who are seeking new experiences, sometimes like to take a break, a coffee break, at a Starbucks.

British Council Overseas Postings
Whether you are on a short break, or going to work overseas for a year or more, you may go through ups and downs of liking and hating the new environment. When I worked for the British Council, we had notes to give to the expats warning them of phases they were likely to go through. First-day thrill of the new. Six-week homesickness. Six months settled. In one or two destinations which were physically and mentally challenging, I think one was Chad, more than two decades ago, the teacher had to be repatriated after six months instead of the year.

I remember going through three phases which we were warned about in the notes we gave to teachers who went to live overseas. You can go through ups and downs emotionally.

Some travellers complain all the time that it is not like home.

Delight In Difference
Others are delighted by every difference.

Small Or Large Hotels
Your circumstances and expectations of a simple life or a five-star hotel can also change your perception. Some people will be bothered by the hotel environment.  Whatever table they are given in a restaurant, they wish to switch to another one. Or they wish to sit at both, before making a choice. Or they don't mind, so long as they get to choose, not the restaurant.

Other people go with the flow. Everything is a 'learning experience'.

Crowds Versus Solitude
On my hiking group holiday, some of the hikers wanted to stay at a simple rustic hotel, not a huge impersonal hotel. Not only the expense. It did not fit their idea of a get away from it all back to nature holiday. (The organiser argued that to get 15 rooms for 30 people, and stay as a group in one place, we needed a large hotel.)

That brings another difference in focus. Do you go on holiday to link up with a crowd, as at a music festival or street parade? Or do you wish to sit on an empty beach, or walk a hiking trail alone?

Territorialism and Toilets
I often go to a new place and feel awkward. I quickly establish my corner and feel at ease. Even going back into public toilets, depending on my mood, seeing the sign in Chinese can make me feel excited, because I am experiencing local culture, or lonely, because I am the only English speaking person for miles. But if I visit the same toilet twice, the second time I am more at ease. I know which cubicle I prefer. (I know that I wiped the handles last time and its the cleanest.)

Territorialism and Choosing Restaurant Tables
If you find that everybody says the restaurant is the same as your last visit, but you find it not as good, or even better, part of it may be your expectations.

The Soul, Essence, Image and PR for a Place
PR people try to capture the soul of a city. The city that never sleeps, is about the activity. The pearl of the Balkans, is about the architecture or scenery. The Venice of the North, is a phrase to evoke a clear visual image in the hope that if you see it you want it.

The PR is also trying to sell on familiar feelings, to make the place familiar. If you liked Venice, you will like this place.

New Destination Or Old?
You can analayse your holiday destination, your life, and your attitude to crime and punishment, dementia and death, by whether you believe everything has a soul which stays the same, and whether you like the familiar, reminders of home, or want something new.

Does grandad, or the tour guide, tell the same stories as yesterday? Do you love hearing the story again, or are you infuriated?

Continuity
I read an article debating whether a brain could be copied or transported to another body, and which would be the real you, the brain or the body? Was there a soul which could survive or move or exist outside the existence of the body and the consciousness of the brain?

Dying Overseas
What happens if you are ill or terminal overseas? It is expensive to bring the body back.

Some people say, 'If I die, just cremate me or scatter my ashes. If I am terminally ill, I'll just jump off a cliff and save you the trouble of hospital bills and visits.'

Some stay at home relatives want the body back. They insist they need a body and a burial place in order to grieve and continue a connection.

Others want to end the searching, the uncertainty, sever the connection. They want to bury the body and closure.

Do Not Resuscitate
I am against Do Not Resuscitate for two reasons. One is, whilst there is life there is hope.

The other is from the point of view of the catatonic, if I were unable to speak, I would still enjoy seeing my family, even if they got no joy from my lack of response.

As the visitor, I wanted to keep my family alive, (my mother, father and uncle) even when they were no longer enjoying life or responding.  I preferred the security of still having them in my life. Their being alive benefitted me, although it was not benefiting them.

Continuity In People
We already have three practical questions to which people give different answers. The orginal problem is, the 90-year-old man looks at the photo of himself as a six-year-old and says, that's me. Is it the same person.

We have this problem when it comes to sentencing criminals. Some say you are forever responsible and should be punished for what you did as a child or a teenager. Others say, if too much times has passed, you are no longer the same person. Some people reform, others are serial offenders.

Crime And Punishment In The USA
The Californians have a simple, practical solution. Three strikes and you are out. On a positive note, if what looks like a murder was an accident, manslaughter, you get a second chance to be careful never to do it again. You also get a second chance. This means that if you reform, then you are a changed person.

If you don't, you are the same person. You must be punished, or prevented from committing further crimes, depending on what you think its the purpose of prison. Taking another scenario, some people say, for example, 'I am a footballer (or ballet dancer). That is my identity, my happiness. If I lost my legs, or brain, had dementia, I would not want to live.'

Dementia
Others remain the same. Love is a two way activity. Some people want to keep Granny with dementia alive, even if she does not recognize them, preserve a body in a coma, and preserve a dead body, because the one way love from the spectator to the body remains.

If you wish to go back to the original article, the link is at the end of this post.

If you are booking a holiday for yourself, be aware of whether you are looking for home comforts and repeats, or surprises.

Organizing
If you are selling a holiday, or keeping a group happy on holiday, note who likes surprises, and who needs home comforts. That way you have more chance of keeping everybody happy on holiday, including yourself.

Soothing
I remember travelling with an elderly relative by marriage who was developing dementia. After half an hour in a shopping centre, she started panicking and wanting to go back to the hotel. She needed to rehydrate, to go to the toilet, to see a familiar place, to get away from crowds of people, to sit down, to see the girl on reception who she would recognize and who would remember her, a waiter or waitress who would take the time and trouble to get the tea exactly how she liked it.

You can also conrol your own reactions and enhance your holidays. I like to go on holidays to new places and learn new things. However, one of the ways I like to include something familiar in a new destination is to learn the language. You can calm yourself and make others smile with just a couple of words.
