Hospital Visitors, Tips For Northwick Park Hospital

1 Know which department to visit.

I was sent a letter to go for a blood test at Northwick Park hospital. When I arrived there were separate car parks and entrances miles apart for differnt departments. If I parked in the wrong place, I would have to take a long walk and pay twice  and be late for my appointment. There was no answering service at car park entrances to get advice. I had no idea where to go. I didn't know that the department I needed was haematology.

I went to see my uncle's body in the morgue in Barnet hospital. No such building. They don't label it as such inhospitals because it unnerves the patients and visitors. Instead it has a mystery name to disguise it such as the trees or the John Smith building.

Check the drop off points. The A & E may be for ambulances over, no access for cars and taxis.

2 Take with you food and water and a change of clothing.

You could be sitting hours waiting for your name to be called..

3 Know which name you are registered under.

You may use your middle name, but be known by your first name to the hospital. If you are waiting to be called as John or Mary when your first name is Ali or Mae you might miss the call.

4 Check all facts on the hospital typework.

I was listed as having an accident in a bedroom when I fell over an uneven paving stone in the street. It makes a big difference if you are suing somebody. I was able to phone and correct it. The person who answered said they would post the new version to me.

5 Shop around

if you have to wait, such as for medicine to be dispensed, while waiting you can go shopping, and shop around for the cheapest sandwiches or meal deals. At Northwick Park hospital on the fourth floor you find a Costa, a shop selling cards and scarves, gloves and gifts, a bag shop,a Marks & Speners, A Smiths bookshop.

6 In A and E by the check in area are masks, jugs of water, toilets, each with washbasins in the cubicle, a machine selling chocolate bars and snacks and drinks.

Also free newspapers.

Drinking water tip for Stansted Airport - and all airports

Staying Hydrated

It is important stay hydrated. You can find water fountains beyond Security.

To avoid buying water, take an empty bottle through security. At the other side, fill up with water from the fountain outside the toilets. You might need to ask for the toilets. You might have to wait in the queue (Americans say line up) for water. If you have loads of time, that is ok.

Hot, hot, hot in the UK. Should we travel or cancel? What should we pack?

This week in London a Toastmasters club cancelled their in person meeting and made a Zoom meeting instead.

The temperature in London was 30 Celcius, which is 86 Fahrenheit.

The temperatures predicted in London on the next two days were 30 OC which is in the high eighties.

Schools are sending home the children.

Other countries scoff at the UK. People commenting on forums, writing from countries outside the UK say that they have higher temperatures, and for weeks longer. They can cope.  They have air con systems. Just look at the buildings. New York buildings and Singapore buildings are festooned with air con appliances.

Inside you see free standing fans, fans attached to lights. Companies give away paper fans. Shops sell gadgets to carry such as battery operated fans.

What about the schools? The schools have glass windows. They are often more than two storeys high and the windows won't open for health and safety reasons. You would think they would have blinds and air cooling grilles for hot weather.

On the other hand, they have different holiday dates.

Poeple are also asking: How come  people can go to the beach at the weekend, but not to work on Monday?

On the beach you can buy ice creams, shut your eyes and do nothing. You can snooze in the heat.

You can take time off to apply sunblock, take a long lunch, go off early to do shopping.

You are outdoors in the fresh air. You are cooling in the sea breeze. You are not breathing in other people's germs, from air con maybe circulating Covid.

You can take a shower. You can cool off in the sea water.

Why was the London in person meeting cancelled?

They said because of the Met office warning.

What are the implications and risks?

Somebody might faint at the meeting. You will be busy opening windows for one person who is too hot, closing them for somebody else in a draughts, calling the caretaker for the key.

If anybody faints during the meeting, it will disrupt the meeting. The organizer could be blamed for the hot room.

The caretaker of the building might be staying at home so you cannot get in.

People will be hot and tired and lethargic and staying home, disinclined to travel.

Your insurance might refuse to cover you if you ignore official warnings.

What Are The Warnings?

I looked at the Met office warning page. It is red, which means that not just the elderly and young and pregnant are vulnerable but everybody.

They asked how to improve their website.

I said - add

Symptoms of being in danger from heat. Why children are better off at home than at school. Advisory on which groups of people should stay home. Does it affect public transport and why? How can I tell if somebody has heatstroke? What are the death figures due to the heat?

Where can I get sun protection clothing online and what qualities should I look for?

Which sunscreen should I wear? What is the cheapest place to get it?

How will the health services be impacted. If other countries have these temperatures, how do they cope?

Why can't we? Will it be just as hot in the middle of August? When should an organizer of a meeting or conference send people home? How do you cool a conference room?

I have been reading the comments on the internet.

How Do Other Countries Cope?

Regarding the idea that others cope, many countries have cars with built in air conditioning.

I had air conditioning in my UK car, but I did not know. I had never previously had occasion to use it.

Can I drink from any tap?

Water in the UK from a drinking water tap is safe to drink. Not from the hot tap in bathrooms. Why not?

Beware Hot water kitchen taps and all household bathroom taps

1 The water stored for heating might be sitting on the roof or in the attic in a storage tank. All sorts of dead animals and insects and birds could crawl into the hot water tank and die there. Our plumber fished out of our tank some rusting metal

2 If the building has a water softener, this is directed through the hot water pipe, whilst it bypasses the cold water tap to the kitchen which is drinking water.

Where Can I find Water On Holiday?

On holiday, when looking for drinking water, you might find it here

In coffee bars - you might have to ask for it.

Gyms.

Hotels.

Stations.

Shopping malls.

Public toilets.

If in doubt, ask. If you ask do they have drinking water, they might simply reply no. So then you can ask them to tell you the nearest place where you can get some, or refill your bottle.

What About Insects?

In hot weather you are also exposed to insect bites. I looked up insects. I thought I was bitten by fleas. After I heard a buzzing sound, again, I saw the buzzer and it was not a fly nor a mosquito, which is higher pitched, but a bee or wasp.

Hot Weather Travel Checklist

1 Drinking water

2 Plan for a refill (eg location of Tesco Express), or free water fountain.

3 Sunhat with wide brim

4 Sunglasses

5 Sun cream. Calamine lotion. (Failing all else, Sudocream healing for nappy rash or heat rash.)

6 Insect repellent

7 Insect spray (working at home, you might prefer a vaccum cleaner, or open windows, and a bowl with a flat piece of card covering the opening to slide underneath.

Windows

8 Open window so insects can fly out. Keep window keys on a hook near the window but not visible from outside.

Window covering, net curtains, hanging bead curtains on doors, or fixed insect wire net.

9 If renting or buying to work overseas, check for outdoor access to keep the room cool and sit outside because of Covid because you or your visitors want protection from sitting at a distance.

10 Overseas, windows often have shutters to let in air but keep out intruders including intruding insects. Check how windows open and shut and any half way position.

Cars

Do not leave babies, children, adults, pets, food, chocolate, in a hot car.

Take a cool box for anything you want to eat or drink during the day or anything you buy. Put a cooling device in your fridge the day before travel and leave a note on the fridge door to remind yourself to put it in the cool box. Or set a timer to remind yourself to put the water and ice in the cool box before driving off for the day.

Make sure your backpack has a separate compartment for a water bottle to keep it away from precious papers and to allow easy access to the bottle.

Pack a separate plastic glass, or two, in case you need to share the water bottle with somebody else, so you are not sharing germs from the bottle. Better safe than sorry.

Be a cool person. Have a cool day.

Staying Cool At Home

11 Sliding glass patio doors might also have an air inlet at the top. Look for a little sliding section over a grille. (We had one for years and did not realise it was there.) If somebody closed this in winter, you might want to open it again in summer.

Travelling To A Conference

12 Pack a hand held fan, a battery operated fan, or make a paper fan.

Deydration - could it cause dandruff and other dire consequences?

I went to see a doctor about an aching leg muscle. The doctor asked how often I drnak water, how often I went to the toilet to urinate and what was the colour of my urine. He suggested drinking more water.

As a result, all my family started drinking more water and various longterm aches and pains disappeared.

I recently read an article about health which explained what happens clearly. Your whole body needs water. If you are short of water, blood and water are first directed to your brain, afterwards to other parts of the body such as your limbs.

Lack of water - what do you imagine might be the consequences?

Dark urine.
Less moist excreta and theefore constipation.
Aching muscles.
Dry skin.
Dandruff.

Whatever your health problems, keep an eye on adeuqate uptake of water.

Your family, friends, colleagues, staff, are likely to be irritatble and not alert if they lack essentials and basics such as sleep or water.

The cure is very simple. Drink more water.

Where can you find water?

Carry a water bottle and refill it when you see a water fountain. In the USA they are often on every floor of a hotel. You might also find them in public buildings such as hospitals and shopping malls and airports.

Is it safe to drink tap water? In the UK I use only taps marked drinking water. Taps in bathrooms in homes may come from water tanks on the roof of the house. This is not fresh water but stored water. Not only is it lacking in the bubbles which make tap water more freshing. The tank, despite the lid, might contain dead birds or insects or pieces of rusting metal.

In Singapore tap water is afe to drink. In India and Indonesia it is not safe to drink the water. In some countries local people can drink the water becuase they are immune to local bugs. But foreigners might suffer adverse effects.

If in doubt, buy a big bottle of water from a supermarket. Take the whole bottle with you or decant it into smaller bottles to carry around. Refill it from a safe source when you get the opportunity.

Overseas, I suffered from a stye, which the doctor said was a blocked pore at the base of an eyelash. I was thinking about this and wondered if I should be keeping myself hydrated so that all the fluids in my body were kept flowing.

In many countries water is free or cheap.

How To Keep Clean At Conference Food Breaks How To Handle Food At Conferences And Meetings

On my first trip to India in a five star hotel restaurant, my soup tipped over the dirty hands of the elderly man serving me. the next day my taxi driver offered me a slicc of some fruit he was eating. I said thank you. He passed it to me with his unwashed and visibly dirty hands. Twenty-four hours later I was down with Delhi belly - diarrhea.

I was ill next day with diarrhea and missed one of my two days in the city which was the highlight of my trip, which had cost a lot of time and money.

Back in London, England, I was ill for ages.

For years I remembered both the two incidents of uncleanliness, plus the illness, but only rarely do I link the two, the dirty hands and the diarrhea. Now, writing this, I think back and wonder what I could have done.

The obvious answers are:

1 Carry drinking water to wash fruit.
2 Carry wet wipes to wipe my own hands before eating.
3 Explain my concerns about washing hands and fruit and handling food with napkins food long before I am actually handed food.
4 In public places put up a reminder sign over food tables pointing to hand washing and free water.

5 Before the refreshment break, ask people not to handle their own food or other people's with unwashed hands.

But sickness can strike you in clean countries, cruise ships, five star hotels, conferences and meetings.

Even if the food is prepared properly, what about that buffet style food? At lunch time or break time, out comes the finger food. UK or Singapore, it is the same at Toastmasters clubs.

Finger food in Singapore.

Refreshment Time Warning
Singapore is reputed to be a clean country. But what about when you are eating food? You are likely to eat food in restaurants, and at meetings, and at the homes of friends and business associates.

Too many people pass you a slice of spring roll, a piece of pie, or cake, using their fingers.
''Scuse fingers?" they sometimes say, hopefully.

Wales
Back in Britain, in Wales, at Writers' Holiday in Fishguard, at Fishguard Bay Hotel, at morning break time we are served cups of tea. All very clean.

But then we help ourselves to a plate of biscuits. I have rushed straight from the painting class into the adjacent dining room. Now that I come to think about it, I should be washing my hands after painting and before eating the break time biscuit.

UK
Sometimes, at Writers' Summer School, at the Hayes Conference Centre in Swanwick, England, you have a choice and can take biscuits which are individually wrapped. Why? At first I thought it was to stop the melting chocolate making biscuits stick together.  It seems like overkill.

Singapore
In Singapore, you are sometimes offered individually wrapped cakes. They have lists of ingredients on the back. Handy for those suffering from nut allergies or diabetics needing to avoid sugar or on weight loss diets.

But, isn't wrapping every piece a waste of time and resources such as paper or synthetic wrapping? Yes. - until you think about handling food.

Scuse fingers?

No, I don't.

Why don't I?

1 Firstly, you have your perspiration, and other people's, from shaking hands with everybody.

2 Secondly, you have just touched door handles and light switches and don't have clean hands.

3 Studies in school comparing groups of children who washed hands with those who didn't find a higher number of coughs and colds among the group who did not wash their hands. Even if you don't have a cold now, you could be passing on germs.

4 Numerous government signs and brochures warn everybody that those of certain age group, over 50 or over 60, are more vulnerable to infection. You and most of the group are able to withstand the risk of infection. I am not.

5 I am later in contact with relatives who are in recovery from cancer treatment and have an immune system which is down.

6 I am frequently shocked that those who work in the health service and can see the effects of illness and read the official advice and the evidence, fail to wash their hands, buy healthy foods, or give health foods to others.

What should they do instead?

1 If you are buying food and paper plates, remember the tissues. so people can tissues.
2 Supply hand washing or wet wipes.
3 Or tell people the location of the toilets and wash basins.

Hand Washing For Groups
If you are organising an event at which people will be sharing food and eating with fingers, have a bowl of water for hand washing and a towel or better still series of towels or paper for hand drying.

Serving Utensils
Provide serving utensils. You can cut the length of queues (Americans call them line ups) speed up service in a short break by  having food tables away from the walls, so that people can pass on both sides of the table. In this case, you need two sets of serving spoons in each bowl, in order to prevent those in a hurry from putting their hands into the communal bowl, or passing food back to others with unwashed hands.

Hold crockery with the finger tips of both hands, instead of the thumb and finger of your right hand with the thumb extending over the eating area of a plate or bowl.

We are bombarded with requests to save water and save paper in order to save trees. We can do that, but not at the expense of having days of work, and missing half our holiday and business travel trip through catching avoidable illnesses.

Maybe I should make myself a badge, and hand out badges saying, "I am over 50 and susceptible to germs. Please use utensils, not fingers, when passing food. Thank you."

I could just make two badges and leave them sitting on the table.

Singapore and Halal
One advantage of the halal restaurants in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia is that they have a washbasin near the eating area, outside the toilet area. This enables you to wash your hands easily.

Global hand washing day is October 15th. We should be washing hands every day.

USA
The American slogan is Clean Hands Save Lives.

Please, Sir, Can I have some dining water - tap water

Problem
Where can you ask for drinking water?

Answer
Have a glass of tap water and a cold drink. Yes, in England, you can ask for a glass of water.

FRANCE

MADEIRA
In the Pestana Casino Hotel in Funchal, capital of Madeira, we has wonderful buffet meals with urns of free water at breakfast time but were not served drinking water at evening dinner. The restaurant wanted us to order bottled water.

One of the Brits started a discussion about bottled water and tap water meaning less pollution and damage to creatures in the sea from plastic. The discussion then went onto drinking tap water.

Other restaurants in Madeira happily served us tap water.

UK
In the UK, by law, if restaurants or bars or pubs serve alcohol they must serve tap water, no charge. (I did read somewhere they can charge for the glass - that's the cover charge you get in some bring your own bottle restaurants. But I have never heard of anybody doing that because the British would be outraged.) The reason is that somebody, a couple of people, in the UK, died after dehydrating after taking drugs and alcohol.

The World Travel Market, a trade show in London, England, in November, has sent me an article on responsible tourism and hotel which eliminate plastic and give out free carrier bags (tote bag), on loan, and refillable stainless steel water containers, with free water on every floor.

Water, water, drinking water in Cambodia, London, Singapore, America

Problem
Is the water safe to drink?

Answers

America
Water, water everywhere. Fountains in shopping malls, on every level or every other level of hotels. I suppose that's why Americans are always so alert. They also don't drink at lunch time. Certainly not at the conventions I have been to.

Cambodia
In Siem Reap (the second city and most visited tourist city because of the probity to Ankor Wat) you are told not to drink the water.

In our hotel we were given small bottles of water for tooth cleaning. I thought, if I'm not supposed to use this for tooth cleaning, do I really want to wash my hands in it? I would clean my teeth, rinse my mouth with bottled water, tip a capful over my hands. What about my face? What about washing underclothes? What about my hands in clothes washing water? What about washing a hat, a blouse, a dress, a slip, a pair of socks?

Presumably washing grapes and apples means using bottled water. And lettuce and tomatoes.

A business man going to Cambodia to the capital next week asks me if it's easy to find bottled water. Yes. Hotels have it on the restaurant tables and in bathrooms attached to bedrooms (although not in the wash rooms / rest rooms. Carry your own. Easy to get water? Yes. You can buy it in a supermarket. Your talk-tuk driver will collect half a dozen bottles of water in a pack and give you a fresh one every morning. You will have saved your own bottle from breakfast.

Remember to save your bottled water from dinner. Don't leave it on the table.

At the airport they will take away your water, but usually let you drink it, or they will offer to throw away the water and give you back the bottle to refill later.

England
Drinkable water from London fresh water kitchen taps. In Physics lessons at school we were told don't drink from bathroom taps because that water is not from the main but stored overhead in a tank which could have all sorts in it.

You hear lots of stories about creatures which fall into tanks. I've heard plumbers say nonsense, tanks have covers so no insects not pigeons nor squirrels can drop in. But we had a plumber who investigated a tank in a loft where we were living and produced and piece of rusting metal which he said he'd found in the tank.

Hard water in London. Soft water in Derbyshire at Writers' Summer School.

Singapore
Yes, you can drink from the tap. We do all the time. I also use the tap water in a coffee machine which I hope boils the water. Then the water is too hot to drink, so I add milk and cold tap water.

I don't like the taste of tap water to drink so I add slices of lemon. Lemon is supposed to rot your teeth, being acid. You are told not to clean your teeth within an hour of drinking water containing lemon.

Wales
Lovely soft water in Fishguard, West Wales.

Tips
Concerned about drinking water safety?
1 Drink water which has been brought to the boil.
2 Buy a filtration kit from a camping shop.
3 Buy bottled water. In restaurants drink only from water which has been poured from a bottle which was opened in front of you.
4 Wash the cup before pouring in water to drink.
5 Avoid ice, iced cold drinks, iced tea, iced alcoholic drink, milkshakes with crushed ice, ice lollies.
