Problem
What is it and when is it?
The Spanish lottery takes place all year but the big prize is drawn on Dec 22nd. Remember that Spaniards celebrate on Jan 5 which is their Eve and their Jan 6 celebrates the three kings, often with characters in costume on horseback parading through towns and villages and throwing sweets to children.
The event is televised all day, the big moment involving songs by children from an orphanage. I first heard about it when a member of Toastmasters speaker's club in London told us the best parts of her Christmas in Spain.
El Gordo means the big one. If you are in Spain over Christmas you can watch on TV or ask friends and acquaintances about it. If you are merely an armchair traveller, but like to learn, you can read about it in the English Wikipedia.
