How To Get Your Child Into A Good School: Scholarships, Tuition, Sports and Music Aptitute

Problem
Although some boarding schools are suffering from a shortage of pupils with parents who can pay the high fees, despite or because of this some of the parents are searching for scholarships which will save money on fees at private schools, or jump the waiting line for places in the top state schools.

IQ based Scholarships
I know one family which was so keen to get their son a scholarship, that he worked an eight hour day throughout the Easter Holidays doing exam papers. He got the scholarship.

Sports Scholarships
In America there seem to be a lot of places for sports scholarships at colleges. Americans are more used to working their way through college.

Music Scholarships
I recently discovered that in London, England there are also music scholarships. This is not something which you have to leave to chance, hoping your child will be born with talent. You can pay for your child to have music lessons with a teacher who will prepare them for the music exam.

I learned this from a notice on the window of Ebony and Ivory musical instruments shop.

Of course, there might be stiff competition. You may have seen the Suzuki method, with tiny children being taught to play alongside their keen parents. But it opens up another option. Somebody has to be the winner.

I went online to look for more information. I looked at one of the free demonstrations of a test. You had to identify whether a chord had two, three or four notes (called texture).

I knew there was a Yehudi Menuhin school in Harrow for music specialists, but had not realised that other schools made a feature of music.

The schools I now know about are well known:
Mill Hill County High School
Watford Grammar School
Claremont High School Academy
Ashmole Academy

There are more. Check on schools in your area and ask music teachers, head teachers, music teachers and music shops.

Languages
One of the perks of being an ex-pat is that employers often help with boarding school fees.
If you take a job overseas, your child has a better chance of learning another language.
