How do you make your subjects look natural?

LOOK AWAY
Ask them to look away and to look back when you reach three when counting.
You count, one, two, three. They turn to you and smile and you photograph them.
Does it work? Yes.
Why does it work? Because, instead of a fixed grin, they turn away and smile naturally when they see you.
SAY NOTHING
Instead of asking the subject to 'say cheese', ask they to say the equivalent word in another language. Ask them to say another word, such as the club or organization they belong to.
Ask them to say a funny word. I would choose a word such as 'Nothing'.
