Problem
An American in Paris in London - sound like a conundrum doesn't it! What's it all about?
The show, very popular in London, England, is a musical called An American in Paris, featuring music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Ira Gershwin, including several well-known songs such I Got Rhythm and 's Wonderful (marvellous that I should care for you).
The setting is 1940s Paris, brought to life with music and dance by a cast of 50 actors, dancers, and musicians. My first thought was that it must be updated from the original because Gershwin died in the late 1930s.
Wiki says 'George Gershwin (1898–1937) was a US songwriter and composer.' However, his brother Ira lived until 1983.
The origin was a jazzy orchestral piece written in 1928 by George Gershwin, based on his stay in Paris. George and Ira were brothers.
According to Wikipedia:
In 1951, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released the musical film An American in Paris, featuring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. Winning the 1951 Best Picture Oscar and numerous other awards, the film was directed by Vincente Minnelli, featured many tunes of Gershwin, and concluded with an extensive, elaborate dance sequence built around the An American in Paris symphonic poem (arranged for the film by Johnny Green), costing $500,000.[22][23]
The latest version is being offered to school groups of more than 10 (with a free place for one person, the 11th) at reduced prices for mid week matinees and evenings. 'It is for key stage 1, and 'For students studying BTEC Nationals in Performing Arts'.
The group prices for school groups of 10+ were seats up to £59.50 reduced to £19.50. Showandd Workshop from £36.
If you can't yet get to London, and you are in the USA, you might likee to look at the Gershwin Hotel. Her is a picture of Gershwin hotel seen from street in New York, NY state, USA, photo in Wikipedia by Richardfalk2.
