What To Do When It Rains: folding shoes, novelty brollies and underground malls

When it rains your boat trip might be cancelled, your view from the tower won't offer great photos and you might not want to leave home. What can you do? Someone, somewhere, has thought up a solution for you.

Problems
A Your feet are wet.
B The street is wet.
C Your clothes are wet.
D Your hair or head is wet.
E You need transport.
F You don't want to get wet en route.

Answers
A SOCKS
Carry a second pair of socks - always.
WATERPROOF BOOTS + FOLDING SHOES
Wear Wellington Boots and carry a pair of fold-up shoes/slippers for indoors.
B SMALL UMBRELLA BAG OR POCKET
Invest in either a small folding umbrella which you always carry. Have a bag or tote bag with room or a pocket for a small umbrella. I have a small bag with an umbrella compartment in the base. Alternatively sew the umbrella case onto the side of a matching tote bag.
C PLASTIC BAGS FOR DIY PROTECTION
Use a plastic bag as an emergency rain hat. Use a large plastic bag or bin liner as a cape.
D BEEHIVE OR UPSIDE DOWN UMBRELLAS
Invest in a beehive shape umbrella. If you are small you can use a children's size umbrella. You can also get an upside down umbrella which folds up instead of down and reverses to drip dry.
E TAXI EARLY ORDER OR SHARE
Order a taxi early when you see the sky getting overcast. Share a cab from a shopping mall to your home.
F UNDERGROUND SHOPPING, EATING & MEETING
Arrange to meet friends in a cafe inside or underneath a railway station shopping mall.
G PLASTIC WET UMBRELLA CASE
Outside Singapore shopping malls and major hotels such as the Sheraton towers is a rack holding last wet umbrella cases. You tear one off and slide your umbrella into it to stop the umbrella dripping on the marble floor and causing others to slip over.

Stories
In Singapore I used to hide from rain in the underground walkway between Orchard Road MRT and Tangs. Basements one and two are long corridors under three or more blocks of shops. (Not for the claustrophobic!)
