Translation of Malay sign on a Singapore train

Problem
I see the words in Malay on a train many times in a visit, so I could learn them. What do they mean?

Answer
Take a photo and put them into Google translate later.

Story
I was so busy in Singapore I did not have time to translate until days after I took my photo. But at last I have the answers.

Tips/Glossary
The English reads:
Emergency exit at both ends of the train.

The Malay reads:
Pintu keluar kecemasan di sebelah hadapan dan belakang kereta api

Here it is word by word

Malay - English
anda - you
api - fire
belakang - rear (back)
dan - and
di -at
hadapan - front (think head of the train)
kereta - car
kereta api - train
pintu - door
sebelah - beside

English - Malay
and - dan
at - di
car - kereta
door - pints
fire - api
front - hadapan
rear - belakang
train - kereta api
you - and a

How To Create Art With Nothing But A Cup of Coffee - warning: watch for stains and insects

Problem
You arrive at your wonderful destination. Great view. But you left all your paints at home. Too heavy and bulky to carry. Or you just forgot.

Answers
1 Add paints and pad to your packing list.
2 Buy tiny colouring and painting sets to carry.
3 Look around for items you can use to improvise. Such as? Anything you could use to dye clothes. Anything which makes nasty stains on clothes.

Stories
I once sniffed a flower on the table at the Wetherspoons pub in Hatch End, London. I couldn't understand what had stained the front of my white blouse. I had not eaten curry. Then I returned a week later and sniffed the lovely white lily and got yellow on my face and fingertips.

I like the idea of using whatever is to hand to draw, coffee, chocolate, dust, charcoal. That's how art started, I suppose, on the walls of caves.

There's only one problem with using food and drink for drawing, especially in hot countries. I had a heart shaped red pendant made of painted dried dough from central Europe in my costume jewellery box in Singapore. I think the pendant was from the Croatia stand at the World Travel Market in London. A year later I discovered nothing but a red string and a box of ants.

Little Boxes
I am also fond of saving pretty chocolate boxes. I like the pretty decorative box, with the ribbons, the patterned paper, the gleaming gold paint. Open it and my eyes light at the sight of the handy dividers. I love the cute compartments. One could use them for storing ear-rings, pencils, whatever I might want to store for later.

Unfortunately, I just had to throw out the cardboard box which once held dates. It had acquired black dots of mould or droppings. The box is ruined, nasty to handle. If I kept it, in future I would be afraid to open it. What might I find?

I managed to salvage the see-through plastic compartment inside. I spent some time washing it out. Then I dried it. I shall watch it for a while. Suspiciously. Is something still breeding?

Tips
When handling clothes and foods which stain, wear gloves and a waterproof apron - or a cotton one which you want to look like an abstract painting.
a) Brown from coffee, tea, tights.
b) Pink, purple or red from red hand wash only clothes. Beetroot. Raspberries. Red currants. If you don't want to use leftover fruit, maybe the wash from what leaked into the box.
c) Black from newspaper print.
d) Dried out felt tip pens.
e) Yellow from stamens - watch out - terrible stains.

The world oddest places to eat and stay: memories of the magic of the cat café, open and closed

Problem
Can't be bothered to go out. Bored? Depressed? Want to entertain children, the elderly, foreign visitors, have a memorable romantic date?

Answer
The internet and TripAdvisor and full or odd restaurants and hotels. I've been to quite a few. Trouble is, many of the best just disappear fast. I have written previous posts on the magi hotel and restaurant. I often look longingly at treetop hotels, and pop-up ice hotels, cafés featuring unusual usable toilets, or toilets as decoration. The more usual and widespread and enduring ones are forest or oriental scenes and guitars (Hard Rock) and waterfalls and aquariums in theme parks and Disney resort hotels and parks.

Story
The Magic Restaurant, San Francisco
Alas closed. Open the wardrobe door and see a cow and start a recorded message telling you to come to dinner.

The Magic Restaurant, London
Alas, closed. Entry door hidden behind a bookcase. Menu appears on white hanky used in a vanishing trick by the person serving you.

The Rainforest Restaurant, Piccadilly
The one in Singapore disappeared under redevelopment of the block near Orchard Road but the one near Piccadilly in London is still there. A real parrot or a parrot video or a parrot mural or fake parrot on a perch always entrances me.

The Cat Cafe in Bristol
The idea behind this is that cat lovers cat curl up surrounded by cats and if they fall in love with one of the cats then adopt a cat needing a home. Unfortunately, I found links to a site saying that the local cat rescue centre did not favour the idea.

Meow Cafe
Denmark Lane,
Bristol
England
UK

http://www.youandmeow.co.uk (Update 2024. It's still there.)
https://www.theneighborscat.com/you-meow
https://shop.trycelery.com/page/

Tips
Watch out for the opening of The Cat cafe in Bristol. It was supposed to open in January 2017. I discovered it when I clicked on a BBC article on breeding poisonous frogs (why would you?) which was reported in a Bristol newspaper, then spotted the link to an earlier article on the cat café.

I went to the website and there's still no phone number or email for me to check if there's a firm opening date. However, I found some amusing cat themed jewellery and scarves.

Not everybody wants cat theme items just because they like cats. I have a friend who has a cat and she says her friends inundate her with cat theme gifts and she has more than enough. She likes real live cats, not 2D cats. So, maybe check before you buy, subtly if you want your gift to be a surprise. If you are buying for ourself, you don't have that problem.

News From Crossrail: Glass doors and a chamber pot

What is Crossrail. It is the new Elizabeth line. If you have been into London in the past five years you will have seen building work at stations such as Tottenham Court Road near Foyles Book shop.

Information
I saw an exhibition on Crossrail at Tottenham Court Road station in London and signed up for newsletter emails on updates. You have to hunt around the sight which contains a lot of information but you will be rewarding by nuggets of interest.

Upgrade Glass Walls and Doors
The Cross Rail project upgrade central London stations and extends west via Heathrow airport station as far as the university town of Reading, as well as East.

The most delightful upgrade for me is the glass doors separating passengers from trains. We have those on the underground in Singapore. It's much safer.

You don't get delayed by suicides. You aren't afraid that somebody will push somebody else on the line. Nor can anybody fall.

The trains have to line up neatly exactly next to the doors, so the passengers can be directed so stand in specific places either side of the doors. Arrow shape lines hold back the passengers from entering so those alighting do not collide with those trying to get in.

It is win win all around. Making for a fast and reliable service, quicker and safer.

Website Archaeological Amusements and Joys
I was interested in the archaeology section. the figures are stunning. They have found more than 10,000 objects, ranging from The Romans to the The Plague.

Individual amusements included the chamber pot with the joking motto: I will not tell. I couldn't help adding the line 'what I have seen'. What a great motto for a modern towel, or even toilet paper.

Whoever thought that one up!

Shish Mahal Indian food with a twist

Problem
Where can you find Indian food that's good and different in Singapore near an MRT?

Answer
Shish Mahal Restaurant in Albert Court Village Hotel.

Story
We changed venue twice. Our first choice was a Michelin restaurant, then we all decided it was too expensive. Our second choice was in Little India, but we thought that on a national holiday it would be too crowded. Our third choice was Shish Mahal which we last visited two years ago or more, in a secluded courtyard, between Little India MRT station and Rochor.

The bread we ordered while waiting for the main courses was garlic naan, very tasty, thin, not over filling.
Two poppadum were crisp, not greasy. Alongside was green mint dip, very peppery, one sip was too much.

Main courses, excellent. Murgh (chicken) korma, with large chunks of moist chicken in a sauce, delicious. Mutton (Maysore) dish, not as chewy as some. Superb side dish, a novelty for me, was aloo (potato) papri chat, with crispy bits and vegetables in a sauce.

The second novelty was the dessert, Shaki Tukda. Fried bread in syrup. Sounds horrifically full or grease and calories. It was yummy. Only two bite size pieces, which salved my conscience.

The small bottled water on the table was $1(Singapore dollar, and we had three). I ordered a mango lassi. Not brilliant, not huge, but just big enough, very nice, good enough. Others ordered tea.

We sat looking out on the peaceful and pleasing courtyard containing potted palm trees and planted palm trees.

We arrived via Little India (rather a headache finding the correct exit). We left walking through the exit arch by the clock with the plaque and the statues. This route goes past the La Salle art college, with its futuristic design. The far end of the college building is opposite the entrance to Rochor station on the blue Downturn MRT line.

The bill, including ten ever cent service was $128.90 between five people which worked out at $26 per person. in English money that's £13 per person, for breads, bottled water, meat and vegetable dishes, rice, two desserts and three coffees and teas and two glasses of mango juice.

Pulau Ubin Island and the Tale of Three Bank Robbers

A Pulau is an isdand.
Problem
How to get there, what to wear, see, do, timing, problems?

Answer
It's a tiny boat carrying about ten people and costs about $44 each way.

Expect a delay until the boat is full, and while paying.

Stories
I went years ago with an American Women's Group. It was like sharing a taxi. The boat took ten people. With about 15 of us we had to get the two leaders in two boats and decide who went first and who went last and where we would meet up at the other side.

The Army's Island
My favourite story is one I read in the Singapore newspapers years ago. If I remember rightly (and I can no longer find the newspaper report) three robbers stole from a bank in Johor on the coast of Malaysia near Singapore. As is often said, "Why let the truth get int he way of a good story?" Here's my version of the story. Treasure Island.

With their bag of looted cash, they stole a boat and rowed off to a nearby deserted island, hoping to lay low for a few days.

What they didn't know was that the deserted island was being used as a place for a training exercise for new recruits to the Singapore Army. The cadets, I presume mostly Chinese by race, were told to hide in the forest around the beach, preparing for pirates or an invasion. They duly hid. Along comes a fishing boat contained three Malays and lands. So the cadets rush out waving their machine guns, surround the three visitors, capture and secure what the army cadets assumes is fake money reprinting a terrorist or pirates stash. Imagine the surprise of the commander, when the three terrified prisoners arrive, with the jubilant cadets. Imagine the surprise of the cadets on being congratulated for making a genuine arrest. Imagine the robbers nursing their bad luck. Imagine the joy of the Malaysian bank getting back their money, thanks to the Singaporean army.

Moral of the story
Do not rob a bank.
Check you will be welcome at the island you are visiting.
Do not land from your boat on unknown islands around Singapore.

Tips
Take sunhat, suncream, walking shoes, insect repellent, bite relief, camera and batteries or smart phone and charger block, water bottle, chocolate bar or sustenance, small coins for payment of ferry charge and buying a drink or postcard or hiring a bicycle.

Storing Travel Notebooks

Problem
Where to find your notes from your last trip?

Answer
Typed and printed pages from your computer and hand written notebooks with your maps and travel items in one shoe box. Some items will be too large. Include an index of items and directions to the larger items. Label shoe box on all sides.

Label the front and back of each notebook with the date and location.
Number every page in the notebook.
List the details of hotels and museums in an index in the cover.

Learning Languages - My Memory Aids For German

Problem
How do you remember words in foreign languages?

Answer
Find visual or sound match or an idea link. If you are lucky, you will be asked three times in the exercises anyway. The memory aid might help remind you forever. Alternatively it might simply help you during learning until the repetition of the newly learned word does the trick.

Story
This morning I tried another Duolingo exercise, which I do daily for five minutes. My two current languages are still German and Italian. (I also started Romanian, in preparation for a trip I might or might not take this year or next, but forgot until I started writing this post.)

Tips
sie - she (first and third letters are the same)
Verlag - publisher - one who lags behind paying authors - not necessarily true but acts as a logical sentence - note that in German the initial letter of the noun is a capital letter; however, ver like verity, published the truth, "publish and be damned" she has published, the word published is ver...
Meldungen - Announcements (memory aid - after the melt down they made announcements)
Begründung - justification (memory aid - on what grounds did they justify hiring her/him? It stinks like dung
Thema - topic or subject (memory aid - theme)

Spare Shoes and Slippers For Travelling, Spare Ties and Jackets

Problems
I've needed spare shoes on four occasions:

1 Ferry to Bukom Island, Singapore - health and safety on ferry to oil refinery island.

2 Club dress codes. I go online to check dress codes at clubs. If you are a member of a club you probably have reciprocal agreements with clubs around the world. You can check the dress codes for their restaurants.

3 On planes leaving on a chute to the ground in an emergency you need to remove heeled shoes which at speed could rip the fabric or get caught in any obstruction or tag, also impede you in running away from the plane which could explode or catch fire.

4 Safety regulations may require you to wear shoes with : covering toes to protect them; and with solid backs, not straps at the back, so shoes don't fall off.

5 Dress codes in some clubs require men and women to wear shoes with covered toes (for reasons of formality, smell, and sight of uncovered body offending some; also no flip flops (called thongs in Australia, the sort which are backless and have a toe post) nor 'slippers' (in Singapore meaning backless shoes either with a band across the toe or a covered front but no back - the sort you can slip your toes into, of the sort worn casually or around the house for ease, no grip and make a slushing noise which annoys others, looks sloppy, and as you walk they prevent you walking with lifting your feet so you are more likely to trip over steps, and again could be smelly as well as exposing the feet to view and not sufficiently formal when surrounded by people dressed up for business meetings, weddings, anniversaries, engagement parties and other celebrations.

6 My heel broke at an event.

7 My rubber soled platform heels disintegrated at an evening dinner at a conference.

Answers
1 If you are in a health and safety environment you need closed shoes or shoe covers. Black is less conspicuous if you don't want to get attention. However a mere thin plastic rain or pool shoe cover might not be considered protective.

2 Exchange or borrow shoes from somebody in an office on land just for the ferry journey.

3 Ensure all members of your group know the dress code in your first invitation email. (And report the dress code in all later emails.) Don't wait until they confirm they are attending. They might not reply if they think they are not able to make the meeting and might join the group at the last minute. The search for shoes, or wait, or change of people attending, and escorting them back to base as a courtesy, can cause disruption, delay and embarrassment to everybody. They might send in their stead another colleague who has been invited by phone or is out of email contact and does not get the follow up emails containing the dress code.

4 Go through your cupboard and find your lightest to carry closed shoes. If you are a group organiser, or travelling by car and don't mind extra wight and bulk, carry a spare pair small for ladies and large for men to lend to others. You might go for a year and a hundred meetings and never need them. Then one day, you are the person who saves the day.

5 If you are visiting 5 star hotels and restaurants carry a spare tie. Whether you are a man or a woman, one of your family or business group may be without a tie, demanding that the entire group leaves. Also travel with a spare tie on any long trip.

Stories
Disintegrating Heel - UK conference
My rubber soled platform heels disintegrated.
It happened as I walked to the basement ballroom along a long corridor, leaving black mess everywhere. I began limping, one foot high than the other, danger of falling. No chance of dancing later.

(Luckily I was at a hotel at a conference in Brighton, England. However, my dinner companion was annoyed that I arrived at dinner late, missing the opening speech.) My new (to me) gold evening shoes were very pretty gold leather shoes with a black rubber type base made by a top end high street store, my third pair, originally I had one pair from the shop, then a second bought in a sale, but I bought a third second hand pair years after they were out of production from a second hand shop. Shoes disintegrate a lot - I've read whole forums on this with customers from the USA and UK and Singapore with even brand new or never worn shoe heels and bases disintegrating, including designer shoes.

USA Broken Sandals
In the Sixties in Haight Ashbury, with scrappy gladiator type shoes, after two months of trading about, my shoes fell apart. You would think you would be able to find a shoe mender. No. Cheap replacement shoes in small size suitable for a lot of walking. No.

Indian Wedding
I want to India, having been told we were dressing casually. On the plane we were delayed 24 hours and made friends with somebody going to their relative's wedding, who invited us to attend. You just never know when you will be invited to a wedding in a country where all comers are invited, or a PR invites you to an opening of an event, a foreign country is celebrating a national holiday, a member of royalty of government is visiting your hotel or hostel, new office or school.

Tips
Companies supplying spare / fold up shoes
Mahabis.com
rollaoole.com
cocorose.london.com
Foldashoe.com
fitkicksshoes.com
If you just want spare towelling slippers to wear in a hotel or home when your outdoor shoes are wet from rain or snow or mud, you can buy backless towelling slippers from the Pounds shops or similar shops in the UK.
Look out for cheap spare shoes in the sales.

Applying for reduced fares for senior citizens on the Singapore MRT

Problem
How do you find out if you are eligible for reduced fares for senior citizens in Singapore?

Answer
Find out which of the stations have the application forms. Only the larger stations do so. You will be given the forms which tell you how to apply on line. You need a photo and a Singapore citizen or permanent resident number.

When you log in and fill in the details, and upload the photo, you are told whether your application has been accepted and how long you must wait.

A couple I know in Singapore just applied on line. They were told on line that their application was being processed. Delivery of the card would take eight weeks. In theory you can apply from a computer outside Singapore. It might be a good idea to try to apply eight weeks before you need it.

Easy Italian, French and Greek vocabulary

Problem
How do I learn new words in foreign languages?

Answer
Just keep learning new words every day. Some will need repeating three times, or many times before they stick. Others will click and stick the first time you hear them. Look at these examples below.

Italian - English

1 antichi
2 culturale
3 finale
4 globale
5 negativa
6 positiva
7 recente
8 tradizionale

English - Italian

Story
I keep lists of words. In France I was asked by a french boy, Do you like fish. I replied, yes, especially mackerel (maquerau). It's almost the same word. He didn't know that. He was really impressed by my command of French.

Tips
Start a language with duolingo. See my other posts

(I'll add more on this subject later. Come back.)

How to insert line breaks in your post using HTML

Problem
My blogs are appearing with HTML instead of Compose in the top left box.

I had typed out sub-headings as well as line breaks. However they did not appear in my text which ran together.

So with the help of my handy family HTML expert I looked on line for line break in HTML.

Voila!

I now just need to spend the whole of Chinese New Year weekend inserting breaks line by line in my previous texts.

The break sign is as usual in HTML encased in brackets which look like the open door sign in a lift, the pair on the right of your keyboard to the left of the question mark.

1 Type in the open the bracket.
2 Type in the two letters br which stand for break.
3 Leave a space.
4 Add a backslash (under the question mark key on your keyboard).
5 Type the close bracket sign top of the key left of your question mark key.
6 Save by clicking on Publish in blogger.com posts.
7 Close.
8 Go to posts and type in view to see if the break has been inserted.

What's an adults hotel and do I really want one? What other kinds of special hotels?

Problem
A friend on Facebook asks whether an adults hotel is for adults only or something more sinister.

Answer
I've checked them on line and they are mostly in honeymoon destinations, romantic beachside places with cocktail bars, occasionally bars by pools, and without children. No crying babies. No creche. no high chairs. Sounds good to me.

Story
I was recently sitting 12 storeys above a swimming pool and BBQ area with constant screeching from children playing tag, woken from my afternoon siesta by the noise.

The Lion Dance with banging drums did not disturb my sleep but the screaming children did.

I would like a holiday with no swimming lessons in the pool with children jumping onto you and instructors shouting at them.

The other kind of 'adults' hotels are downmarket, in cities but in cheap areas of town, and rent rooms by the hour.

I heard from two girlfriends that they had booked into basic budget hotels in Singapore, one in an area which turned out to be the notorious red light district. People were coming and going constantly, checking in and out day and night, without luggage. The hotel had no restaurants, not even breakfast. Nobody staying there wanted to waste time eating, nor to be seen in public. The first friend was studying sociology and was delighted to see 'real life' rather than a regular hotel. The second friend was on a tight budget; she was very happy that the helpful receptionist was keen to send her off to budget eating places.

A tourist board in Australia found me a new hotel in a certain district when it was hard to get accommodation anywhere in the city because of the simultaneous gay parade. The tourist board suggested I might like to visit later. Our flights were already booked at advantageous prices. I told the tourist board that we weren't bothered by the parade.

When our taxi reached the hotel my husband went in first to check it was the right place, and had our room. He was given a very warm welcome by the man on the desk, who was amusingly dressed, in leggings and a wig and lipstick, like a character from a dancing school. The receptionist must have assumed my husband was single and gay.

When I arrived with the luggage a few minutes later, I enthused about all the art school paintings, and Greek God statues. The person on the desk looked distinctly disappointed at meeting me. He had no interest whatsoever in discussing Greek mythology with me.

I didn't realise what kind of hotel it was until a couple of young men dressed like twins in purple tops came downstairs holding hands and, again, looked very suspiciously at us.

The World Travel Market has held marketing meetings where companies promote different kinds of specialist holidays, aiming at the pink pound, the handicapped, adventure, luxury, health tourism and other specialist holidays, hotels and packages.

Tips
Check hotel websites and read the feedback and you'll soon see what kind of hotel you have found.

If you have children or grandchildren you may want the opposite, a family friendly hotel offering children's activities, early suppers, reductions for children, a children's paddling pool and play area, a creche.

Even if you are a grandparents, when not with your own grandchildren, you might like the relief of a quiet hotel. The romantic hotels may be full of honeymoon couples.

The off-season Saga hotel could have a high proportion of people with wheelchairs and sticks, plus sit down evening entertainment such as shows featuring songs from musicals. If you have difficulty walking, you might want to ask if a hotel with a daily buffet can give you waiter service or let your partner take food for two. Hotels aimed at older people may have single bedrooms. Daytime activities might include talks, or bridge or card games for those who like to sit in silence.

You can find hotels suitable for every age group and interest. Hotels cater for children, romance, all inclusive, activities, extreme sports, music, art, photography, water sports, dogs.

You can stay in tents, skyscrapers, or on boats, hotels designed for the gay, the blind, the handicapped, golf, volunteering, the elderly, the single, the opera lover, the wine enthusiast, or those who want to learn drawing or cooking, bridge, bird-watching, swimming, sailing, or whale-watching. I go on writers' holidays and speakers' weekends and holidays. Others choose songwriting and story-telling. Or time seasonal holidays at ski resorts, or to see Wimbledon Tennis or football matches.

You can go on safaris, mountain climbing, trekking. Pick historic hotels, ultra-modern hotels in funny shapes, on mountain side pods, in youth hostels, universities, caves, ice hotels, spa hotels and hotels with giraffes poking their heads through the window.

Learning Romanian, Reading, Writing and Speaking, with a little help from Duolingo

Problem
I have a trip to Romania planned. I cannot even say, yes, no, toilet, how much, or I have lost my group. Not yet. However, I have started learning. Just one lesson a day.

Answer
The wonderful Duolingo website which enables you to learn language basics for free now has 27 languages ready or soon to be ready for English speakers:

Czech
Danish
Dutch
Esperanto

French
German
Greek
Hebrew

Hindi
Hungarian
Indonesian
Irish

Italian
Klingon
Korean
Norwegian

Polish
Portuguese
Romanian
Russian

Spanish
Swahili
Swedish
Turkish

Ukrainian
Vietnamese
Welsh

I have started Romanian. It is a Romance language and said to be one of the easier languages to learn. It certainly starts looking easy.

English - Romanian
a - o
am - sunt
boy - baiat
girl - fata
I - eu
man - barbat
not - nu
woman - femeie

Romanian - English
barbat
eu - i
femeie
nu
o - a
un
sunt - am

I am having trouble inserting the accents. The second a in fata has a concave or cave or spoon shape above it. The nearest kind of accent I can insert is a line.

Now, how do I remember the words. My associations with the words may not be politically correct, but they achieve their purpose.
The Romanian for girl is fata. (I think of a fat girl. Fatter - a fatter girl. Fatā.)
The Romanian for woman is femeie. I think of the word female. The l is squashed to make an i. Three times letter e.
The Romanian for man is b a r b a t. Similar spelling to a Barbarian. I think of a barbarian man in a hat. Or a Viking in a barbed hat. B a r b a t .
Not and nu both begin with the letter n .

Stories
Singapore and Singlish
Where is Singapore?
When I first went to Singapore I did not know where it was. Many people in the UK and USA and elsewhere have heard of Singapore but don't know where it is, unless they stop over in Singapore on their way from America or Europe to Australia or New Zealand, on Singapore Airlines or an Australian airline.

There's even a book title about not knowing where Singapore is. "Is Singapore somewhere in China?"

For your information, Singapore is an island, city state, or both a city and a country, south of Malaysia (which in WWII was called Malaya).

The majority of the people are Chinese by race and they mostly speak Mandarin which they are taught at school, as well as English which is taught at school and used as a common language, for conversing with tourists, and the minorities who speak one of the four official Singapore languages, Indian language Tamil, or Malay. (Singlish is English spoken by people who are translating from Chinese, so that the grammar follows Chinese and drops past and future tenses, the words a and the, and adds la at the ends of sentences.

Where Is Sixth Avenue?
I got off a bus and asked a passer-by, "Do you know Sixth Avenue?"

She replied, "No, where is it?"

I was flabbergasted. "I don't know," I replied, "That's what I'm trying to find out."

The reply I was expected was either yes, (followed by directions), or, "Sorry, I'm not from round here."

Tips
Don't rely on local people to give you directions. If you need directions, ask somebody who is walking a dog, pushing a shopping trolley, or working nearby, of the local race and language, rather than a foreign visitor. Other good bets are people carrying maps, smart phones which might have GPS, groups at bus stops or in line.

Silly questions travellers ask - my silliest questions

Problems
1 Travellers researching a trip ask the tourist board daft questions
2 When entering a new country you ask a daft questions
3 When interviewing somebody you ask a daft question

Answers
1 Research the answer, and check FAQ (frequently asked questions), before asking questions and taking up the tourist board's time.
2 Never mind. Just remember and write down your question - and the reaction - you'll laugh about it years later.
3 Read William Brougham's checklist on Facebook.

Stories
On Facebook I read a checklist for interviewers compiled by William Brougham who I met in London when he came to Harrovian Toastmasters to be the speakers' meeting's General Evaluator. William has interviewed me several times on YouTube. I liked his useful checklist for interviewers. I was also amused by example of his silly question to the tourist board of Andorra, about the beaches. Andorra is land-locked! I began thinking about my silliest questions.

'My silliest questions'.
Angela Lansbury On Asking A Silly Question On The Plane to India
My cringe-worthy moment was when I was jet lagged and filling out the immigration form for India on the plane. I asked the person sitting beside me, "Why do they want my VISA number? Will the MasterCard do? I suppose it's to be sure I am solvent."
The reply was, "They want your immigration visa number. Visa with a small v."

Angela Lansbury On Asking Silly Questions in Malaysia.
I took my first trip to Malaysia and encountered something strange in the toilet. I went to the information desk where a girl a a bright purple headscarf smiled.
I hesitated, "May I ask a silly question?"
"Please do," she encouraged me, "I ask silly questions all the time.:
"Er," I said, "In the ladies toilet, the long shower attachment with the tap on the wall by the toilet in the cubicle, is it for washing the floor or washing yourself?"
"It's for washing yourself, you can use it," she assured me.
I have always remembered not just my question but her lovely, friendly, reassuring answer.

Angela Lansbury on Asking A silly Question About Buffalo Wings
I was on a press trip around America on a trip to the Grand Canyon. Our coach had driven past many places where the guide talked about the Wild West and buffalo. We stopped at a restaurant for lunch. I saw the starters included Buffalo wings. Oh, I thought, some fancy name for small cuts of buffalo meat. I ordered the Buffalo wings. Up came chicken wings. When the serving staff came round to ask how we had all liked the lunch, I pointed out that I had not received my Buffalo Wings. She retorted, "Yes, you did!" I did not wish to pursue the point. It was a free meal. No point in causing trouble.

A few months later I was talking to somebody and she said she came from Buffalo.
I asked her, "Does your area have any special food?"
"Yes," she said. "Buffalo wings."
I asked, "Made from Buffalo?"
"You mean bison? No. Made from chicken wings."
I want not and cold and blushed.

She told me the story of Buffalo wings, supposedly invented in bad weather when the only food was chicken wings and sauce, which were combined to make what is now known universally, at least all over America, as Buffalo wings.

I still get waves of horror when I think about it.

Tips
Check menus online before you go to a new country. Learn to pronounce the names of food and the ingredients.

How to Behave And Take Photos at Holocaust Memorials, Pearl Harbour and Cemeteries

Problems
1 Other people are posing for smiling group photos at Auschwitz and Pearl Harbour. Should I say anything?
2 I pose for photos beside a memorial to a famous author, or a person featured in a novel. How to avoid smiling photos.

Answer
1 Ask the tour guide or site owner to put up a sign.
2 Take several photos so you can pick one which looks suitable.

Stories
The subject of behaviour is in the news because of Holocaust Memorial Day in January. Auschwitz was liberated by the Russians, already abandoned by the Germans, in 1945. A person who was shocked to see photos of adults, teenagers and children leaping about and laughing and striking silly poses on holocaust memorials uploaded photos from other people's websites. He changed the backgrounds to show the people posing against horrific concentration camp pictures.

One argument is that a memorial is not a cemetery, unlike Auschwitz. However, I still think it is inappropriate to stand smiling alongside a list of names of dead people, of which there are many on a tourist's list. Some people even think it is not appropriate to stand alongside a list of names. However, I wanted to stand alongside the names at the Menin Gate in Europe, and Lockerbie, in Scotland, to show I was there, and create human interest, and make my travel article and my own memories of my holiday less gloomy.

1 I first became aware of this problem at Pearl Harbour when I saw groups of smiling orientals posing for photos. As they were speaking what I presumed was Japanese I felt uncomfortable. You cannot assume that a smiling oriental is showing disrespect. The Japanese often smile when announcing a death in their own family, to mitigate the impact on the listener. (The say some people joke at funerals, not out of disrespect but in an attempt to lighten the mood.)

2 At Auschwitz I saw orientals posing for a group photo by the train. I wondered whether they understood the significance of what they were seeing, as many people were on a whole day tour, of which Auschwitz was only part.

3 I remember standing at the gravestone of the boy who was featured in a book by Charles Dickens. Dickens had been sent to write a novel highlighting the dangers and abuses of sending unwanted stepchildren away to boarding schools. (The story went that many children died at a particular school, where the headmaster was depicted as having one eye. The writers of articles defending the headmaster said that although many children died at the school, even more died outside the school, because the death rate of children from malnutrition and communicable illnesses was so high in those days.) I stood pointing at the gravestone of a boy who had died.

The photographer, as usual, before snapping the picture, called, "Smile!"

I shouted back, 'Take several photos!'

I was later able to select a photo of myself looking serious and contemplative.

It is a reminder that photos you take and upload to the internet can be viewed by many others as well as taken out of context.

Sh - how to open your laptop without disturbing others

Problem
You open your laptop and it disturbs others. It is an embarrassment if you are in a meeting and there's a speaker addressing the meeting and you are in the audience and have been asked to turn off mobiles and any devices which makes sounds. The same thing can be annoying if others are sleeping and you have jet lag and want to get up and use your laptop and it suddenly goes ping. You might want to
1 Disable the sound on an older laptop when travelling.
2 Install the sound when returning home.
3 Install the sound on later models of laptops which have no sound.
4 Install the sound for security reasons.

Answer
https://pingie.com/2016/10/31/how-to-enable-the-startup-chime-on-the-2016-macbook-pros/

This website tells you how to turn the machine noise on opening on and off. However, it might be useful to turn the sound back on if you want to be sure somebody else is not using a laptop. For example, children supposed to be sleeping. The latest laptops have disabled the sound. If you have an earlier model, or want to restore the sound on a later model, you can do so by installing a code.

The sound of the ping is F sharp.

Story
I opened my laptop on my last overnight trip on a plane. It was a nuisance because I was afraid I had disturbed the person sitting next to me. The noise seemed so loud I thought it could also annoy people behind, in front and across the aisle! This is a nuisance when you are travelling overnight on a plane and others are sleeping.

Tip
Keep a file of things you need for your computer and mobile phone when travelling or relocating. Send the link to yourself in an email with the model of your laptop in the subject line. Create a file with the brand of your machine. If you can't remember the file, just search for the laptop model number in your email inbox on either your laptop or mobile. To ensure you have access, have your emails stored in the cloud. If you do not use the cloud for security reasons, you can print out the information and keep it in your hand bag or briefcase or carry on bag or jacket pocket, or hand a duplicate to a family member or colleague.
You can also bookmark the information and sign up for updates from the websites.

Chinese New Year Reunion Dinners

Problem
A friend in Singapore emailed me asking for contacts for a club which should be meeting today.

Answers
You can go onto the Toastmasters International website and find meetings worldwide. Just type in your country and how far you are prepared to travel.
I have the director for 2016-2017 listing every club in Singapore and all the committee members phone numbers and emails.
Earlier this week the website was not working for me. So I asked a colleague to check the website on another computer and email address to see if my laptop had a fully connection. No, the website was down whichever email address and computer. However, it could have been the router, but you check that by logging onto the BBC or another website.

I sent my friend a list of the three clubs meeting today. Then I tried contacting three members of the committee of the club meeting earliest.

They had cancelled because most members were out of town (either on business or because of Chinese New Year).

I was getting ready to check on the next meeting in the afternoon to help my friend, when he replied:

'I'm giving up trying to go to meetings today. It's an important date, the even of Chinese New Year is the Reunion Dinner.'

I didn't realise that. I knew the two days of Chinese New Year. But apparently the evening before is like Xmas Eve in Europe. (In central European countries such as the Czech Republic, Xmas eve is a family dinner with carp (or other fish) as the main dish. That's in contact to the UK, where the main meal is Xmas day lunch. (However, offices increasingly close the afternoon of the day before because people are rushing around doing last minute shopping for food so it's fresh and because shops will be closed the next day or two, and they need last minute presents, and to go home and tidy the house for visitors.

Taxi Drivers, Telling Troubles And Asking For Advice

Problems
1 If you tell others your problems they don't sympathise but offer advice.
2 But when you want practical advice they merely sympathise.
3 The reverse applies when they talk. Sometimes your advice annoys them. They reply, "I know what to do." Or,they retort, "I'm not short of suggestions".
4 How can I be more like mother who just listens, until asked for practical help.

Answers
The answer lies in the problem. The speaker has to make it clear whether they want sympathy or advice. Usually if they want advice, they will ask for it, "What should I do?"

Even then, they often answer their own question: "I know I need to take the motorway, but I prefer the scenic route."
Sympathy is called for.

Story
Once, on my way to the airport in the USA, I started telling my troubles to a taxi driver.
He cut me short: "Lady, I've got troubles of my own!"
Nowadays I'm always bright and cheery to taxi drivers. If it's sunny, I say, "Lovely sunny day!"
If it's raining, I say: "Rain - is it good for you? Does that mean lots of customers?"

Tip
Start cheerful if you want a cheerful conversation. Stay silent if the other person wants to pour out their troubles. You may gain insight.

Story
I once spent the first half of the dinner trying to make conversations with somebody who had no interest in any of my cultural pursuits. I tried writing, art, music, visiting far away places, London. Blank looks. Silences. I asked if he travelled on holiday. He'd never left the UK, only went up mountains in Wales and Scotland, leading his school's scout troupe.

I asked what precautions you needed to take in advance. The moment I'd asked, I thought, that was a mistake, "Oh, dear. I'm being negative."

However, he immediately launched into an account of how he planned his trip, the numbers of adults needed per ten children, what equipment was needed, the weather forecast, and so on." I hardly needed to say more than uh huh and nod for the remaining, last half hour.

I went home thinking, "What a disaster. Nothing in common. He must have hated the meal and me."

I was astonished when he rang to say, "What a delightful meal .. I did enjoy your company, what a wonderful evening, we must do that again."

I made my excuses and left - the country.

The moral was, when I stopped talking about myself and trying to find a mutual interest, and simply listened to his favourite subject, I was 'a good listener' and he was delighted.

That applies in social life, business and your taxi to and from the airport.

No Trumps In Conversation

A Russian friend unexpectedly asks me, "Do you like a Trump?"

"Well, er, um," I say, not wanting to lose a friend, "I prefer not to comment on politics".

It occurs to me that maybe she does not want to hear my opinion but to give me hers, regardless of mine. So I ask her, "What do you think of Trump?"

Her reply is the opposite of what I expected: "I like heem," she says. She concedes. "Many people do not like heem."

I nod silently.

She continues emphatically. "But I like heem. Hee is a strong-er man. We need a strong-er man."

"Yes," I agree. That settles it.

What a happy end to our conversation. I did not have to say, "Yes, I hear you." Nor did I need that conversational 'suspended sentence', (suspended metaphorically, in two senses), "Let's agree to differ."

The world will carry on, regardless of our conversation. Neither of us lives in America. Neither of us has a vote.

I always think it's silly for two people who are expats in one country, already at odds with another country, and each other's home country's language and culture, to disagree about politics in a third, far away country.

I do not comment on pronunciation. Stronger means more strong. She probably knows that.

After all, I know that the r is rolled in Spanish, but I can't get past a mixture of lisping and gargling.

The important thing is that my Russian friend and I, we are still friends.

I would never have succeeded as a politician. But I always wanted to go into the diplomatic service.

17 UK Tax returns end of January.
18 Learn how to say or reciprocate when wished 'Happy new year, and to recognise the sign on banners in hotels, shopping, malls:
Gong Chi Fa Choy. (Roughly gong she far, choy) depending on whether the well wishers are speakers of Mandarin, Cantonese or H o c k i e n or another dialect.

Details
1 Red packets.
You get red envelopes free from banks, fast food outlets and shops, or you can buy them from stationers. Unmarried relatives are given money (ideally in lucky numbers such as 8 or multiples of eights, not four which is unlucky because it sounds like death). The Mandarin name for these gifts is h o n g b a o. (I have inserted spaces to prevent autocorrect changing the word.)

2 Pineapple tarts.
You can buy these in see through squat jars with screw top bright red lucky colour lids.

3 Chinese New Year Cards or emails.
Find sets in newsagents, like all cards, cheaper the day after.

4 New Year holiday flights and queues.
Book early. Flights are likely to be full over the New Year as people fly home to China, Taiwan, Singapore, or from China, Taiwan and Singapore to their birthplace. Also employees given a long weekend off, even if not celebrating Chinese New Year, will be taking flights.

5 Zodiac Signs:
Rat, tiger, dragon, horse, ox, rabbit, snake, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig.

6 Year of the Rooster.
See red roosters in advertisements and on banners.

7 New year weekends and traffic jams.

8 Visits to families.
Some friends and colleagues will be busy visiting their families.

9 Lo Hei.
Delicious mix of vegetables in rainbow colours, often with smoked salmon added for protein. Watch out that nobody adds shellfish later if you are allergic - get your portion before the shellfish is added.

10 Bak wah.
Preserved pork. Delightful favour, I am told, with sweet as well as savoury. Long queues for customers.

11 First across the threshold in shops.
You might get a bargain if you go into shops early in the day.

12 Pairs of oranges.
Shopkeepers and friends are likely to give you a pair of oranges. Surprisingly they don't have to be new and gorgeous but could be old and tired looking fruit. You return the compliment a few hours or days later.

13 Toastmasters Table Topics (impromptu speeches).
At a Toastmasters Club meeting before Chinese New Year the Toastmaster of the Evening is likely to open a meeting by going clockwise around the room asking each person to say their name, where they are from, and how they will be celebrating Chinese New Year.

14 Q and A/ FAQ:
Anybody from an acquaintance to a lose friend is likely to ask: What are you doing for CNY?

15 Lion dances.
Noisy. Hard to take photos because they jump about so ask them to stand still for a photo after the lion dance. You will see trucks carrying groups of men and the costume, making a noise in the street. Performances may take places outside or inside restaurants and shopping malls.

16 CNY celebrations and cancellations.
Check club and business meeting changes.

17 UK Tax returns end of January.
Many UK people, pensioners (retirees), accountants and business owners will be too busy to do anything except finalise their tax returns.

Stories
An American lady went to a lo hei and her designer top was splashed. She was very upset and claimed compensation.
Possible remedies:
1 Warn guests to wear washable clothes.
2 Warn guests with vulnerable clothes to stand away.
3 Issue plastic aprons with advertising goodwill messages.

Tips
Advise visitors.
Wear washable clothes.
Wear a washable scarf to cover clothes.
Carry tissues or wet wipes.
Know your Chinese birth sign.

Find Your Way By Bus In Singapore

Problem
How to find the best bus, the bus stop, the cost, the journey time, and the stop where you alight?

Answers
Get the address of the place you are visiting, including:
the building name,
the section (such as Tower A or Tower B, or block 650)
a nearby landmark
a department store at the end of the shopping mall if it's a large mall so you go to the nearest area
the postcode for satnav or GPS (Global positioning system which is broadcast from satellites - satellites are the hardware, GPS is the software and Satnav or satellite Navigation is what you get out of it - some sophisticated and expensive watches for climbers and hikers include GPS)

Story
I took a journey to a COMMUNITY Centre in Jurong Green. I found a search website and entered my starting point and destination. First I had to walk to the correct stop to board. Then I had to get off at the correct stop.

1 I brought up the maps or my starting point and destinations on my laptop, printed the colour maps, and also photographed the maps on my mobile phone.

When I got to the bus stop, I photographed the list of stops and counted them. I had three columns of stops and had to take three photos.

The stops were confusing. The had a number and a name. The name was often a building on the other side of the road. For example, opposite such and such a station, or building.

I wrote down the destination stop and the one before it with gaps in between and noted I had about 14 stops and the journey would take about 30 minutes.

As I came to each stop i noted how many stops, 1st, second, third, the name of the stop, the number and gave it a tick.

When I got to the stop before mine I checked that the Bus Stopping sign was illuminated. Otherwise I would have had to press the stop button.

I got out my MRT/bus card ready to swipe on exit. Noted the handrail to grab and got near the exit.

I double checked by asking the bus driver at the previous stop (not speaking to him whilst he was driving which is forbidden as the notices tell you).

Tips
Count the number of stops, the number and name of the last stops, and photograph either the route on your laptop screen or the route on the sign at the bus stop.

How to find a place in Singapore, including nearest MRT and exit

Problem
How to find a place in Singapore, including nearest MRT (railway station) and exit?

Answers
By train. Go to street directory website. This gives you the nearest MRT as well as the exit. For example, to get to Thomson Community Centre, go to Marymount station, exit A.

Tips
streetdirectory.com
Get a map of the underground from the ticket office in any main station. If you can't get a paper map, find one on your laptop, iPad or smart mobile phone.

An alternative is Google maps.

Use a pencil to mark your route. Note the interchange stations and the end of the line. Allow an extra five minutes to exchange lines and walk around large stations such as Newton.

Direction/location maps are on the wall near the ticket office or the top of the escalator in most large stations. You can also take a picture of the map on the wall so that after you have left the station you can see which side of the road you should be on and which turning to take.

You can also ask the ticket office for directions. Sometimes they are helpful. Occasionally they don't know. You should remember that some areas have more than one Community Centre. The centres may be called Central, South, North, East or West.

Why Have Photos Disappeared From My Blog?

Problem
Photos are not loading onto my blog on blogger.com . Why.

Answer
I am getting a pop up message saying I have exceeded my photo allowance, not just on blogger.com but on Google.

Story
I thought this might be a scam. Before paying anybody anything on line, I check with family and friends, and on the internet. My family assured me that this request was genuine. Basically, it's like everything else on line. You are offered a certain amount of free usage. They hope that you will become hooked and eventually want to, or be forced to, pay more for greater use of the service.

You might take the view that you will do everything to avoid making the leap and start again elsewhere.

Or, you might take the view that you are getting great value from the service. If you are running a business, the cost is coming off against tax.

For me, the next problem is payment. Which credit cards and which password. You may have to wait some time until I sort this out.

Tips
First check with colleagues whether the person demanding money is genuine.
Clear clutter so you are not paying for websites you no longer need.
Then get your business credit cards and passwords sorted so when and if you decide to pay you are ready.

Health Insurance, Dentists, USA and UK

Problem
The British ask: Why are Americans against 'free' health care. Isn't the NHS a good thing, and free for all at point of demand or delivery?

Answers
UK/British Health care became an issue in WWI and WWII when it was discovered that only about one person in four was fit enough to be a foot soldier. Another factor was that those who could not afford health care or did not care when they were young and healthy got ill and infected everybody else so you got epidemics. Bringing in free vaccinations and preventive measures as well as universal health care benefitted everybody. In the same way as making car insurance compulsory protects others on the road. Even those who could afford it won't pay unless compelled to do so.

Stories
In the USA I went to a dentist. I was surprised at the low cost of the health care. But the dentist only looked at the one tooth which I thought was the problem.

In the UK a dentist checks your entire mouth, including the teeth alongside, the one biting against the one which has the problem.

Tips
Check your health care before travelling. If you travel frequently, it may be cheaper to take out an annual policy. Check any exclusion clauses. This is important especially if you are likely to go skiing or snowboarding on a winter or Easter time holiday. When you travel down under to Australia the seasons are reversed. (And vice versa, if you are based in Australia and travelling up to Europe or North America.

Alligators - best avoided - safety tips

Problem
How do you catch an alligator.

Answer
Stay away and call an expert.

Or go to alligator catcher training classes.

Story
I just read about an American dental practitioner who catches alligators. One method is to sit on its back. If you can get near. (While somebody else who is braver and equally strong holds its jaws together. Assuming you are a heavyweight person or have a few friends who weight more than the alligator.)

Then you need the tape to tie up the jaws or you are stuck holding on all day. Plus the ties to fasten its feet together. And watch out that it doesn't swipe you or some other innocent with its tail.

Frankly, the best thing is to stay at a distance.

Brave lady. But the article mentions that 'only one' person died?

Well, there's the small child in Florida, plus a person recently in Australia. That's just the two I remember from the past six months without bothering to research. Plus, of course, the missing people.

It depends how you look at the statistics. Nobody died in the local swimming pool /pond / golf course in the last five minutes. Or so many nationwide or worldwide in the last year, decade or century.

All credit to her because it's brave, trained experts like her, carrying the right equipment, who help keep the figures down.

However, the telling figure for me was when an alligator worker in a Florida theme park
said he could not get life and accident insurance.

I goggled alligator safety and found this website:
http://www.sccf.org/content/45/Alligators.aspx

As far as I can see (on the website) - in real life they recommend carrying binoculars - you need to keep many feet away. And alligators over a certain size are not always protected. It may vary from state to state or country to country. Check local laws.

Tips
Read about the dangers first so you are well informed. Then check for and obey any warning signs.

What To Do When It Rains: folding shoes, novelty brollies and underground malls

When it rains your boat trip might be cancelled, your view from the tower won't offer great photos and you might not want to leave home. What can you do? Someone, somewhere, has thought up a solution for you.

Problems
A Your feet are wet.
B The street is wet.
C Your clothes are wet.
D Your hair or head is wet.
E You need transport.
F You don't want to get wet en route.

Answers
A SOCKS
Carry a second pair of socks - always.
WATERPROOF BOOTS + FOLDING SHOES
Wear Wellington Boots and carry a pair of fold-up shoes/slippers for indoors.
B SMALL UMBRELLA BAG OR POCKET
Invest in either a small folding umbrella which you always carry. Have a bag or tote bag with room or a pocket for a small umbrella. I have a small bag with an umbrella compartment in the base. Alternatively sew the umbrella case onto the side of a matching tote bag.
C PLASTIC BAGS FOR DIY PROTECTION
Use a plastic bag as an emergency rain hat. Use a large plastic bag or bin liner as a cape.
D BEEHIVE OR UPSIDE DOWN UMBRELLAS
Invest in a beehive shape umbrella. If you are small you can use a children's size umbrella. You can also get an upside down umbrella which folds up instead of down and reverses to drip dry.
E TAXI EARLY ORDER OR SHARE
Order a taxi early when you see the sky getting overcast. Share a cab from a shopping mall to your home.
F UNDERGROUND SHOPPING, EATING & MEETING
Arrange to meet friends in a cafe inside or underneath a railway station shopping mall.
G PLASTIC WET UMBRELLA CASE
Outside Singapore shopping malls and major hotels such as the Sheraton towers is a rack holding last wet umbrella cases. You tear one off and slide your umbrella into it to stop the umbrella dripping on the marble floor and causing others to slip over.

Stories
In Singapore I used to hide from rain in the underground walkway between Orchard Road MRT and Tangs. Basements one and two are long corridors under three or more blocks of shops. (Not for the claustrophobic!)

ART Assumption Pathway Restaurant

Problem
Where to find a cheap, quick meal? Where to find a catering college restaurant?
Answers
In Singapore just across from Cashew MRT station on the Downtown line you'll see the Assumption Pathway School, a Catholic institution started decades ago as the sign on the interior wall tells you. The school is run for those not able to attend mainstream schools and includes a restaurant as well as a bakery department underneath.

The restaurant is open Monday to Friday in term time, for lunch from 12-3 and for tea.

Story
We went there for the second time in January 2017. We had tried to phone but got an answering machine. When we arrived at the gate to sign in the security guard assured us that the restaurant was open. The restaurant is large and we had no problem getting a table as late as 1.45.

We were seated straight away and given the menu. The set meal consisted of a starter - mushroom soup, a main course (four choices) and a dessert. The vertical triangular information display on the table says they aim to welcome you with a smile and to deal with you within one minute.

We ordered our meal immediately because it was late for lunch and we could see straight away that we did not want the sandwich nor the vegetarian option and we wanted one of each of the other two options. However, the disadvantage of ordering straight away was that we had no time to check out any drinks.

Hot bread, a steamed white bun with a sweet glaze, came with a pat of salted butter to melt on top. I really liked the fact that the bread was hot, and the sweet glaze. My companion was less enthusiastic and said it was like a McDonalds bun.
We tried two different dishes, fish, and boneless chicken. The chicken came with mushrooms in sauce. Both meals included carrots and mashed potato. The fish was good, tasty with a nice sauce.

The chicken was fine, a kind of pate of lumps pressed together, good for me as I hate fighting to get chicken off the bone and I do not want to upset my delicate teeth nor fillings on a chicken bone.

I like mashed potatoes. I thought the carrots were too hard but my companion loves crunchy vegetables and thought they were good. (You can't please everybody.)

Highlight of the meal was the dessert. Ostensibly a little cup cake, with a scattering of walnuts. This was the one dish of the three which had a design. Also the little cake contained ground walnuts which matched the walnut pieces on the plate.

Coffee or tea was included. The filter coffee came up with hot milk in a mini-jug and wrapped white or brown sugar sachets.

A three course lunch is quite filling. They keep the same menu for about three months. The main course has four choices, although one is only 'a sandwich'. If it's the sandwich shown on the deli counter, it's more like a subway roll than a triangular sandwich. I wonder whether the sandwich can be heated. Not that you want hot food in Singapore.

Afterwards I looked at the take away counter next to the till. I spent a dollar on a crumble cake. I could have bought pineapple rolls in a plastic container, a traditional Chinese New Year delicacy, for S$20 (twenty Singapore dollars).

The room is large and bright. With season decorations. Toilets at the back through an automatically open door with a push button on the wall.

You walk in through the school cafe with benches. Then up a flight of stairs. Not for the disabled. The place seems geared up for the mentally challenged but not for anybody physically challenged. There may be another way up, but it is not obvious.

Notice the herbs growing in troughs outside the front door of the restaurant. I missed them on the way in but noticed them on my way out. The herbs are labelled with their names.
Who Or What Is This Place Most Suitable For?
Budget meal. Fast meal. Supporting local, Catholic school.

Who or What Is This Place Least Suitable For?
Anybody who can't cope with stairs and wants an obvious, nearby lift.
Anybody who wants to sit and linger over lunch.

Tips
They say last orders at 3 pm. After that you will soon be able to order tea.
In addition to the lunch, you can buy a slice of cake to take away.
You can order cakes including one design of birthday cake with Happy Birthday on it. They require five days' notice for a birthday cake.

Chinese New Year Decorations And Customs

Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright 2017.

This photo was taken in Toa Payoh at ground level above the MRT railway station.

A quick guide to what to see and do in Singapore for Chinese New Year.

1 Decorations all over Singapore, especially in shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, community centres, office building lobbies, and entrances to apartment blocks.
2 Red packets in which you place money for unmarried relatives, or discount coupons for customers.Ideally use multiples of eight which is a lucky number.
3 Lo Hei dinners in restaurants and clubs. I thought Lo Hei was invented in Singapore but a girl from Hong Kong claimed it was a Hong Kong custom.
4 Oranges, pairs of oranges, are given to friends, family, customers, and passed from one person to another.
5 Expert airports to be busy, flights fully booked, long queues and high prices during the festive season.
6 Reunion dinners for families on the first day of the Chinese New Year, friends or more distant family members on day two.
7 At Toastmasters International speakers' clubs (of which there are about 250) visitors are asked to say their name and what they like to do for Chinese New Year.
8 The traditional greeting is displayed everywhere :
恭喜发财 (gōng xǐ fā cái) Wish you wealth and prosperity.

Chinese New Year changes with the calendar. In 2017 it starts Saturday January 28th.

Learning Languages Whilst Travelling - Malay For Emergency Exit

Problems
How do you learn languages while travelling?
What do signs mean?

Answers
Translate signs on buses and trains and words you hear.

Story
I had looked at the signs on the trains and buses. Finally I got around to taking a photo so I could translate later. I could see the word Pintu on Malay (which is mostly the same as Indonesian) was likely to be door. I speak Franch and remembered that the French for the door is la porte. But what were the other two words?

I photographed the sign on a bus window. It was at an angle but I later blew up the words.

I translated the three words by typing them into my search engine as translate ... I did not even have to specify the language. What came up was the heading Indonesian, not Malaysian.

Malaysian / Indonesian - English
Pintu - door
keluar - exit
kecemasan - worry (emergency)

So now every time I sit on a bus or train and see that sign I will be reminded of pintu, which I have confirmed is door, cellar is exit, and kecemasan is worry / emergency.

If you or I ever need the exit we can ask in Malay or Indonesian for the Keluar or keluar kecemasan. How do you pronounce it? Fortunately Malay and Indonesian languages are phonetic (sounds like it's written). K is a hard sound like the first and last letters in the word kick. C is pronounced like Ch as in the first and last letters of Church or the initial c in cello. S is S. Reminder sentence: don't kick the cello. Kecemasan.

Every time you and I sit on a bus or train we also have a reminder of the pronunciation of the letters k and c. Don't kick the cello.

Tips
1 For instant translation simply type any word you see into your search engine on your phone or iPad or laptop.
2 Keep a record of new words at the back of your physical diary or in the Notes page on a smart phone such as the iPhone.

Sculpture in Singapore

Problem
Where to see statues and how to keep track of them?

Answer
I am going to do a top ten of my favourite statues and sculptures.
London has many wonderful statues of historic figures and plaques and busts. Singapore has some of my favourite modern sculptures.

Here are three which can be seen walking from Telok Ayer MRT (mass rapid transit - underground railway)to Raffles Place MRT.

1 The Spiral of Men

Here's a close-up view:

2 Silver Balls and triangles

3 The empty head and see-through body

Natural Insecticides: lemon, lemon grass and garlic. I bought some. Now what?

Problem
I just got bitten walking back from he swimming pool. Time to apply a natural repellent.
You and want to deter insects, but have a pleasant smell. Ideally a location, not a chemical you spray on yourself and therefore are likely to breathe in.

Answers
Garlic, lemon, orange, cinnamon, vinegar, cayenne pepper, peppermint, lemon grass, all seem to be effective.

Story
Our family shopper brings home the lemon grass. We are not used to dealing with it. So it sits unopened. After two days I am compelled to do research.

The bad news is that lemon scent applied to your skin has to be reapplied every two hours, according to one source. Ok, I can do that. I just want it for a walk down to the swimming pool. After I swim, it will have been washed off anyway. So I need a zip-lock bag containing a slide of lemon to reply after my swim for the walk back.

Too complicated. Simpler to carry with me one of those containers of lemon juice in a plastic bottle (sometimes yellow plastic shaped like a lemon) from the supermarket.

To keep a good supply of lemon grass, as well as providing a permanent solution, I need to grow it in a container.

The same applies to a lemon tree.

Planting Lemon Grass
How do you plant lemon grass? Direct into the soil? It seems that you have to put it in water first and watch for roots. After a few days, when you see roots, you can carefully plant it in the ground near the back of your house, or a window box or a container on a balcony. Keep it watered.

Americanisms - internship and diaper

Problem
I keep meeting words which I half recognize on American or American language websites.

Answer
Keep on ongoing list, A-Z, in a diary.

Story
I was teaching English to a group of students at a school in Singapore. One of the pupils asked me to explain the word diaper. I translated it as nappy.

She asked me, "Are you sure?"

'Yes,' I answered. 'I grew up in England. I had a baby in England. I know the word nappy. Then I lived for two years in America.'

Tips
American English - British English
American English - Americanism

Good News About Geckos and Little Lizards - and Komodo Dragons! And Mosquitos.

Problem
In Greece I was terrified of geckoes.

Answer
In Singapore they don't bother me. Why?

Story
Greek Gecko
I recall visiting Greek islands and being terrified of geckoes. I thought they were scary, unpredictable, might bit, were unhygienic, could fall off the walls or ceilings onto me and my suitcase of clothes.

I have to think back. What was I so afraid?

I must have lifted the lid of my suitcase, exposing the contents to anything falling in. Then placed shoes on the floor, exposed to anything hiding inside. Then I lay down to rest on the bed, and heard a noise and saw a lizard scuttling across the wall or ceiling, equally bad when visible or invisible. Maybe I went into the shower, undressed and vulnerable, likely to slip on a wet floor, not wanting a lizard in my white towel, alone with it in a small space, having it in the clean water. I was terrified. I couldn't sleep, hearing it scuttling around. I called the management. They came and assured me that it was harmless. Too avail. I was still upset. Couldn't wait to get out to the restaurant, away from the bedroom where I was alone.

Singapore Gecko
Later in Singapore I first saw geckos on the outside walls. No use screaming and calling for help. The creature was out of reach and disappeared. Just walk away.

Then I saw a gecko indoors with other people around. They were not bothered but chased it away to mollify me.

Finally I was alone with a gecko. But it wasn't a big one - it was teeny.

I phoned for advice and help.

My spouse was at work. "How big was it."

I admitted, "Er - tiny."

"Probably more afraid of you than you are of it. Cover all food. Leave it alone. It will go away."

I went back. It was in a corner. Hiding. But could not escape. Quite right - it was afraid of me.

I tried to reassure it. "Please go out of the window. Or the door. Come on. I'm not going to hurt you. I promise. You are OK."

I think that was the turning point. Now I'm not bothered by larger ones the size of my hand. The only ones I don't like are Komodo dragons. On the isle of Lombok. And in London zoo, London, England. They are big and dangerous, like crocodiles combined with a hippo. But little lizards clinging to the wall anywhere else. No problem.

The good news about Komodo dragons was that they were confined to Lombok. The bad news is that we now have one in London, albeit in a zoo.

Tips
Talk to your lizard. Reassure it. Reassure your children or guests. You'll probably soon find that you are no longer bothered.
Geckos eat mosquitos. Since we have had a case of dengue in the block where I have lived in Singapore, a gecko is a welcome sight.

Indonesian Island with 'dragons'
The Komodo dragons, large lizards, are on Lombok. Going east, you see Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok, Zumbawa, them more Indonesian islands, about another 13,000. I once watched a very nasty video of Komodo dragons circling a poor animals, biting its ankles and watching it gradually collapse until the pack of dragons could eat it.
